I'm assuming that
Merrill is a very small elf, and is potentially a head shorter than male
Hawke. But in the video she is "walking up" to Hawke. Literally. So she
could even be on a hill.

I think it might actually be the party that's standing on a hill, I'm not sure.

But, for those who were wondering, yes-- all elves do look different. They all have a very slender build, and their ears are more prominent. Their eyes and noses are also fairly different. Like most races, however, there's a fair amount of variation between the individuals. With any like, you'll get some looks at other elves to criticize examine. :)

Yes! This! You guys have no idea how cute Merrill is. I work here and and I still squee when she says things I haven't heard.

There's a lot of this in the writer pit:

Merrill (in-game): (something unbelievably cute)
Sheryl: GIGGLESQUEE!!!!! SO CUTE!!!
Mary: Hee hee.
Sheryl: She's so adorable I love her and want to hug her omgIcan'tbelievehowadorablesheisCAN-I-NOM-HER-HEAD?!
Mary: ... No.

This isn't meant to be a slight or anything, but how does one who acts like this on the internet get taken seriously as a writer? I have not heard so many instances of "squee" and "nom" from women on the 'net since I was early teens. When someone basically says that they behave in a manner similar to a teenager in real life, my faith in their ability to actually write a good story or character diminishes greatly. I really wish the writing team would exhibit Obsidian's level of professionalism in this case, as it reflects better on a title that I -want- to like as I have enjoyed the developers' past work.

I really hope this is not indicative of a shift in the quality of BioWare's future games.

Create an appreciation thread for a male character, and everyone is all over celebrating their beauty and gorgeousness and adoring them like none other.

Create an appreciation thread for a female character, and everyone is busy tearing the character down by personality, appearance, bicep size, height, chin length, and whether or not they are too cute or too loose.

What the hell people? what the hell.

Daaaaavid, will you crush my dreams and tell me that a person who loved the Dalish origin wouldn't recognize the new, cuter Merrill? Or will I be spared the lightning bolt of being Gaider'd? :-P

Yes because BioWare writers have absolutely no track record at all of fantastic and believable writing, arguably the best in genre if not in gaming in generalPosted Image

I thought the presentation was fairly appropriate.  I think the Dalish see themselves as fierce warriors and have an oral history that may or may not be accurate, but in the larger scheme of things--from the outside looking in--they're pretty insignificant and not all that frightening.  They are allowed to live in lands that other people don't want.  The glory has faded.

Loghain was scared of them.  If this is what Loghain was scared of, I'm taking the signature down now.  LOL

You're basically judging them only by appearance.

Yeah its pretty amazing how people can be bigoted over someone looks..

You judged her based on her looks as well, did you not? The only difference is that you liked her look.

True, but I'm not the one insinuating that because she's cute she wont be of any use in a fight.

Nor am I. She was very useful in the Dalish origin and I'm sure she'll be just as useful in DA2. Simply because I don't like her look doesn't mean that I think the character is/will be awful. I don't like Leliana's look either, but she's still one of my favorite characters from DAO.

God forbid she have a bit of fun at work and interacting with the people on the forum.

Well they both must have been doing something right, since both of them were also lead writers for DA:O and had a hand in several of the companions therein.
Most artists I've met, be they musicians, painters, or writers, tend to be horrendously eccentric. As such I don't begrudge any of the writers for acting out in a manner that befits their personalities. They're just human after all.

Nice comment there buddy. Did you have to take a class on being a douche or are you just a natural genius?
What does saying "squee"(as annoying as that is), and "nom nom" have to do with being a professional writer. This is an internet forum, not church..

Not to mention Hawke's pretty tall. Btw my mother's less than 5 ft tall and my father's above 5 ft 10 inches and there's nothing creepy about them (well, not until you get to know them).

BioWare's writing has generally been believable, but never the best in the genre. Black Isle/Obsidian and Troika have always been the better of the two in that regard. Bethesda during the Morrowind years also was a force in terms of writing ability.

I was hoping for Origins elves, only maybe fiercer and more tribal in keeping with the lore.

A fiercer, more tribal approach to the redesign would have been my preference as well. It appears they chose to go in a different direction. Such a size disparity does seem to raise some questions about comparative and competitive racial advantages. In Origins I was rather surprised/disappointed to discover that a human noble started with a higher dexterity than a dalish elf. It posed the question of what elves did well (The answer apparently was magic, but magic among elves and humans is the perogative of a select few). Then again, humans did enslave the elven race and effectively exterminate their culture, so mayhaps I've answered my own question and merely prefer denial.

All that said, I consider it a reasonable possibility that the 2 second clip from which many of this thread's conclusions were drawn is perhaps being over-analyzed (which is hardly the forum's fault, as this was the presentation Bioware chose to release.) By my admittedly layman's eye, this clip appeared to be one of the more "dated" scenes in the video. I would also suggest to fellow posters that critisism is typically more effective/valued when it is detached, measured and does not resort to hyperbolic denigration (Also, it makes you appear less of an ass. People have worked on this (likely a great deal), and in my humble opinion they are deserving of some consideration). I think that at this (very rough) first glance Merrill appears a little uncomfortably youthful myself, (and it seems a little strange that her ears extend more horizontally than vertically) but others are free to disagree and ultimately it falls on Bioware to make their determination on the appearance of her model.

Mary and Sheryl are just people, and are allowed to have fun like anyone else. Considering how admirably they both proved themselves on Origins -- which I assume you enjoyed -- I'd think they'd be above such insulting comments as this.

This is pretty normal, I'm afraid. Mary and Sheryl and I were talking about this just the other day, and predicted this response to a tee -- though I think we're also very pleased to see she has fans, as well. No character's ever without their detractors, and that doesn't change anything. We don't take it personally, and neither should any of you.

Each to their own, I haven't enjoyed anyone else's as much as BioWare's.

Regardless of which, you admit Bioware's is good while still going for a needless attack on the writers.

It reeks of a lack of professionalism, and this is the main reason why people do not take video games seriously as an artful expression. Acting like that in front of your fanbase is just asking for the development of a very toxic relationship with them.

And to address another point: Artists may be eccentric, but that is not eccentricity. It is behaving like you just found the internet and you are not yet out of high school. I realize they are grown and professional women, so I do not understand how they can be proud of the fact that their expression is directly transferable to that of someone much,  much more immature.

Also, no class needed for my douche-iness. I am willing to divulge my secrets for a modest sum.

Swore people trolled Carver pretty good.

Impossible that people. . .like? the male designs?

Or is this gonna be made into a gender inequality thing.

Not even to mention that the gender disparity online is huge to begin with.
