Yep, I'd also say that it's confirmed that Merrill is a romance option. If you ask me, it was confirmed in the story dev diary video, but now it's definite.

That really, sucks! I was hoping to romance Aveline, then cheat on her with Merrill.

But if she's really the toughest companion (character anyway) that would explain why you can't romance her. Sten was pretty tough inside and out, but he'd rather be fighting darkspawn, than kissing a Grey Warden. So maybe it will be the same with her. Unless it's because she already had a husband, and she's dedicated to Wesley, even after his long gone.

Yeah, unfortunate to make happiness out of the disappointment of Aveline fans, but Merrill is in the bag, so to speak. No sexual innuendos intended, of course.

They seem to have gone to great lenghts providing and interesting backstory for Aveline and a mature quest involving her. Im really happy about that. 

The notion that you need to "bone" someone to be "close" with her/him is really juvenal, IMHO.
What Im really looking forward in this game is mature themes and relationships and less comic relief -shallow characters ala Zevran or Oghren...

I was relly hoping (though really doubtful) that BioWare might actually allow for 6 possible romance options. Isabela, Aveline and Merrill & Fenris, Sebastian and Anders. Though now that I think about it, it seems only Varric and Fenris could be romance options. Because Seb is a DLC companion, and Anders doesn't seem like he'd care for romance now that Justice has become one with him (like with Wynne). Not that Wynne could ever hope to be an LI.

Since there's no Aveline romance option, I guess that it will be Merrill...or Anders...or Fenris, you know..depends.
