However, that said I can see a party member dialog banter starting up somewhere along the lines of...

Anders: "So..."
Merrill: "Are you trying to hit on me again?"
Anders: "No, not this time. But I realized something today... you're a Dalish elf, right?"
Merrill: "Please don't tell me you just noticed."
Anders: "What I mean is... I helped out a friend a while back, and he was Dalish, too. I wonder if you knew him?"
Merrill: "Yes, all of the Dalish are on a first-name basis with all other Dalish, no matter their clan. It's definitely safe for you to assume I know every Dalish you've ever met, in fact."
Anders: "Well now that you mention it, I wouldn't be surprised if you'd memorized your entire race's birth records..."

If he still has a sense of humor after the Vengeance thing, then you might not be far off.^_^

I hope Merrill is the cute elf equivalent of Wrex. Angry, pissy, smart mouthed, sassy, sarcastic, violent, but well adored.

Now THIS is an idea I can get behind.

I really do hope Anders hasn't forgotten how to be hilarious. If he has we all lose.

I looked up Eve Myles after reading the speculation here on Merrill's voice actor. I like her voice, and I think it would fit pretty well with Merrill's appearance.

Anders: You aren't... like many Dalish I have encountered before.

Merrill: Oh right. Because I forgot that you Shem have such a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds, whereas we Dalish all look, smell, and act exactly alike.

Anders: I didn't mean... What I meant to say was...

Merrill: *rolls eyes* Hawke.

Hawk: Merrill.

Merrill: Can you do something about him? * looking at Anders*

Hawke : I could, but you know... he's a little off these days after that incident...

Anders: Geez Hawke , that was one isolated incident...am I gonna have to hear jokes about this as long as we are here in the city.

Hawke : Yes, especially if you don't leave her alone...and, you may not wanna let me catch you hitting on my baby sister again, while we are having this discussion...

Sounds nice, and has that quirky girlish thing about her:). Plus was on Torchwood which is a good show.

(although i'd question whether it's such a good idea to let the artists call the shots like that, considering supposedly number of questionable design elements in ME2 like the whole "weapon reloading" stuff and the widely mocked vacuum breathing masks were result of listening to the artists' whims perhaps a tiny bit too much)

Actually the people who complained about it are just people who watched too much cheap Sci-Fi and think a vacuum will flash-freeze and explode you upon contact. It won't. It's quite possible the artists for both that game and Dragon Age maybe did a little research, and tried to find a good balance between what makes sense in the world and what looks good. I will tell you that the first step in doing art is research.

Merrill not wearing shoes should be fine in a lot of situations, but it wouldn't make me want to take her into the inevitable sewer level... or a smithy. Fortunately, we as players don't have to worry about little details like this; this isn't Saw the video game. And if I WERE in the game like Captain N, I'd just carry around an extra pair of sandals for her, and I'd bring everyone rain boots before the sewer level. :-P Just make-believe that your character is doing just that.

Lastly, I have a feeling I'll like Merrill a lot. Really, all of the girls seem awesome, but I think Merrill will just barely nudge them out. I've been surprised before, though.

Youre right, going into the vacuum of space unprotected does not instantly kill you, you actually have a few minutes of complete agony before death takes you.

The idea that "protected" means "no parts of the body exposed" is where you are wrong. Also the part about "minutes" (if you're not adequately prepared for vacuum exposure, you'll pass out after a few seconds). Most people just assume what they know is the truth without actually looking into the matter, or understanding what a vacuum is, or what space is. But I'd rather not dedicate any more posts here to the subject, since this is about Merrill.

And on about Merrill, the matter can be expanded by saying that shoes are not actually necessary in the wild in many places. Your feet will form calluses. Although yeah, they won't be very pretty.

Nor a pleasant expierence seeing as you will be in quite a bit of pain until the calluses form and as a person who has a lot of calluses on their feet you can still feel alot of pain if you step on something uncomfortable. With that said though I don't have much of a problem with Merrill's shoe design beyond it looking like a shoe with the bottoms cut off.

Well it's not like she'd have to go from a plush life straight to roughing it in a week. And even if she did, that's a few weeks of pain compared with the ability to be more agile. Now, I don't think I'd choose to do this. I'd be worried constantly about stepping on stuff wrong. Pine needles. Yikes. Well, people have done it so it must be possible. But I certainly wouldn't.

Perhaps Elven feet are just exponentially more durable then Human feet? Did that ever occur to anyone?

I would imagine living barefoot would toughen one's feet too.

All in all, it's a stylistic choice. It's not that offensive to me. I was more offended by things like Miranda's outfit.
