Does anyone think that Merrill is the returning companion from Origins?
haha when i heard there would be one from Origins i did wonder if they counted the temp ones. Bioware are sneaky like that.
I know right. I saw Gaider here so I thought he might know the answer.

Maybe we can get her a sandwich as a quest?

This is pretty normal, I'm afraid. Mary and Sheryl and I were talking about this just the other day, and predicted this response to a tee -- though I think we're also very pleased to see she has fans, as well. No character's ever without their detractors, and that doesn't change anything. We don't take it personally, and neither should any of you.
I think its worth pointing out that many (though not all) of the most vocal Merrill critics are the same people that haven't like anything else they've seen, either. I mean, it's kinda like, "Oh, look, Joe Bob* doesn't like the way Merrill/the new elf model looks. No one saw that coming." I'll add I'm not enthralled with the way she looks, but am waiting to see more of her body before I judge, as you say.

Wow.. That cats teeth is sharp.. Reminds me of a bear trap.. A soft, furry bear trap..

Yes! This! You guys have no idea how cute Merrill is. I work here and and I still squee when she says things I haven't heard.
There's a lot of this in the writer pit:
Merrill (in-game): (something unbelievably cute)
Sheryl: GIGGLESQUEE!!!!! SO CUTE!!!
Mary: Hee hee.

To me, this quote sums up everything that's wrong with the internet. On the internet, you have no face, no social status, no reputation, which allows you to be yourself more than ever indeed. But there IS one restriction, and it's respect for others. If you don't care about others, why not be yourself... with yourself then, you know ? If you don't care for people's reaction to your opinions, then why should they care about your opinion ? That attitude may even make the people who might agree with you wanna disagree with you. No one can get everyone to agree with them but at least you could try to present your ideas in a way that doesn't offend people. If you can't find a way, it's likely a bad idea. The Lyons wrote...

Having the apparently only Dalish Warden who is not "I hate all shems I want them to die!" out there, I approve of the apparently non-incredibly-hostile personality it seems that Merrill will have (I always felt Velanna was pretty bad for Dalish PR), but writers, reassure me she'll still be recognizably Merrill if you loved the origin? Like I think Isabela is looking wonderfully fleshed out but still the Isabela we knew from DAO.
I'm hoping that Merrill too will be fleshed-out but still Merrill from what seems to be the least favorite origin out there? Or am I going to be one of the few people who even know she seems different? :-P
Yay! I had a dalish warden who wasn´t prejudiced against humans either, she was mostly curious, treated them as equals while mantaining her life-style and religious views as an elf.
My city-elf though loved killing humans, which is understandable considering what Vaughan does to him.

that's actually a really cool idea - people's hair getting longer or changing styles.
or guys getting beards
but i doubt that kind of thing would happen
Yea, I think it would be a good idea if the character's 'style' changed over the years - clothes, hairstyle, beard, scars, horrifically disfiguring skin disease, etc.
Personally, I'd like to see the characters body model change as well - facial changes, wrinkles, fatter, more muscles, etc, but that is apparently not happening, so id at least like to see the 'style' changes beyond just clothes.

Mary and Sheryl are just people, and are allowed to have fun like anyone else. Considering how admirably they both proved themselves on Origins -- which I assume you enjoyed -- I'd think they'd be above such insulting comments as this.
Insulting indeed. Not to mention ignorant, rude, sexist, condescending, etc. I'd hate it if the writers just sat there stone faced the whole time while perfecting their craft. It's freaking Dragon Age, not the Walstreet journal.
Sexist? Hardly. I thought the "staring at FemHawke's butt" speak that appeared whenever ago was also incredibly unprofessional. Ok not sexist, but can everyone say self important? Good lord, exactly how much authority do you think you have in calling out Sheryl for posting in a way that doesn’t meet your prissy little benchmark? Precisely none methinks.
Bringing us back on topic, Merrill is without doubt the character I’m most interested in meeting (I'm actually digging the new design).

Look! It's an elf who is female. A dalish elven female.
Jenifer Hepler suggests she's a "virginal girl next door."
There's apparently a Merrill Appreciation Group.
What we know:
She's written by Mary Kirby.
Edit: David has reminded me that this is 'speculation.'
So remember that BioWare has not confirmed that she's a virginal girl-next-door.' They certainly haven't confirmed that she's a love interest.
Hawke would look like a pedo-Assuming Direct Control !

Mary Sheryl...the rest of the writing team. You guys are awesome and I love interacting with you. That is all.
Seriously, I second this post. I have to spend 90% of my day at a job I sometimes enjoy and sometimes utterly hate, but I have to be super-serious ALL THE TIME. So, when I come home and have downtime on the Internet, the LAST thing I want is for everyone to feel like that have to act super-serious or suddenly their profession is scarred.
Mary, Sheryl, rest of the team... keep being your silly, humorous selves. Half my fun on this forum is laughing at y'all's posts (and watching David's virtual eye twitch at the more... erm, high-strung posters). The other half of the fun is poking the barely-alive Loghain thread and watching (with utter fascination) the Varric Love Train and pondering if it's safe to fully board or not.
If these boards were meant to be no fun, all serious, there wouldn't be emoticons, now would there?
So... lighten up, Francis!

This isn't meant to be a slight or anything, but how does one who acts like this on the internet get taken seriously as a writer? I have not heard so many instances of "squee" and "nom" from women on the 'net since I was early teens. When someone basically says that they behave in a manner similar to a teenager in real life, my faith in their ability to actually write a good story or character diminishes greatly. I really wish the writing team would exhibit Obsidian's level of professionalism in this case, as it reflects better on a title that I -want- to like as I have enjoyed the developers' past work.
I really hope this is not indicative of a shift in the quality of BioWare's future games.
I am sorry. I know this has been addressed before, but I cannot just keep calm and carry on and say nothing. I know some people are lead to believe that very rigid behaviour masks are needed to have a satisfactory professional performance, but I dare to disagree. Sheryl Chee has already proven to everyone how much she's worth as a writer and I doubt her work was done keeping a grumpy face and a hollier-then-thou office attitude. That's the same type of attitude that prevents people with tatoos getting jobs. She's a videogame writer, not a bank accountant. Self-confidence leads both to excellence and freedom. She showed great joy in her work and I doubt much people can claim the same. Besides, whoever is offended by watching a woman squee, is like being offended by watching a cat purring. The information she pulled through in such an adorably expressive way was very relevant to this thread, in my opinion, specially coming from a BioWare writer, and in no way deserving of bashing.
Please, Sheryl, do not stop making such adorable and spontaneous comments. Merrill looks adorable indeed and we can't wait to hear more from her.

OT but definately get onboard. The Varric thread is the friendliest and most accepting thread on the forums, Isabela is my fav character but the Varric thread in my favorite fan thread, there is just so much win and awesome there!
