One thing I really appreciate about the elf redesign (and which we've seen a reflection of here, to an extent), is that it's given them a sense of the uncanny. They look inhuman enough to disquiet one. It makes the widespread prejudice against them make significantly more sense than it did when they could pass for human by putting on a hat.

I agree with this.

I think that if there is only one female bisexual option, that will be Isabela. She was bisexual in Origins. I don't see any reason why they have to change that. Not that I don't like Merrill as a bisexual option. I like both characters, so I'm fine with both.

Considering in the live chat video she offers to give Fem!Hawke "company",(and the pictures of M!Hawke with Isabela) I'd say it's a safe bet.

Dalish Sorcery....duh. It's a defense mechanism. Templars hunting her are too busy going 'Awwww' to defend themselves as she rips them apart.

Even when she sets people on fire? I think you mean especially adorable. Not to mention sexy.

I stop lurking on this thread for a week and we get LI confirmation? WOOHOO! And since everybody apparently likes comparing Merrill to ME LIs, from that screenshot it looks to me like we have a Paragon Jack style love scene waiting for us.

Given people are perfectly able to prejudice against other humans as it is even when they're actually one and the same species, i don't think there was ever need for that to 'make any more sense'.

Merrill does not need magic, thats spontaneous human combustion caused by cuteness overload.
Oh, and I absolutely love the high-res game mag pic. :o

This is true.  But I like the new elf look because it gives them a distinct visual personality.  Fantasy elves that are humans with pointy ears are boring and unoriginal, in my opinion.  And I think the divergent looks visually reinforce the distinction between the two peoples, which is an efficient storytelling technique.

This picture always makes me laugh because it looks like she's accidently blowing Hawke away too.

Also, some more possible evidence that all the LIs could be bi, this was found by Chouan:
"There's absolutely nothing wrong with
making all romances accessible to any gender. It just requires a
different approach, from a writing standpoint..." and "Would
we do this? I'm not really going to say one way or the other-- but if
we did I think it's safe to assume we wouldn't set out to implement it
in the worst way possible." this quote is by  Mr. Gaiden from this thread: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/5687716

Sure, but those prejudices are very often based in physical differences. The physical differences between elves and humans in DA:O were almost non-existent.

That's not the whole of it, of course. Cultural differences existed even between the freemen of Ferelden and the city elves, and cultural differences can be just as divisive (look at the division between Americans of different socio-political leanings).

All I'm saying is that now the elves have a much stronger distinction in their physical appearance, and I find that aids in my immersion in the world, which is something that I approve of.

Besides being cute, what else do you think she'll have to her character? Any skeletons in the closet?

Losing her friend to darkspawn corruption might be one. Particularly if she was, ahem, "close" to that friend.

I imagine she'll have difficulty "dealing" with people. As noted in her bio, she is a Keeper's First, and thus "separate" from her tribe. So if you attempt to befriend or romance her, I imagine it will get very awkward. (Especially since Hawke is a dirty shem.)

Nothing new there, Viconia romance from BG2, Morrigan romance DA:O
Much as I love weird/odd girls, games should really try a different approach to romance plots other then the "stuck up b*itch/extremely shy" types.

Well so far there hasn't really been any "shy" types(atleast in DA, I haven't played any other Bioware games). Maybe Alistair, but not really. Morrigan was just a ****, plain and simple, there was nothing shy about her. I look forward to Merrill's awkwardness, as I find it adorable. Besides, we haven't actually done her romance, nor do we know much about it.
In fact we know the least about Merrill... :crying:

True, I demand more Merrill info! And she may have been a b*tch, but I still loved Morri :o
I was revering to Aerie from Baldur's Gate 2, an extremely shy elven girl. Well, girl, she was thousands of years old, but behaved like a 16 year old.

I actually liked Morrigan once I got to know her better, but I'm a very stubborn person so I had a hard time dealing with her...
I've heard her(Aerie) mentioned a lot... I should really play all these other Bioware games everyone talks about.
I was hoping we'd get a little video of Merrill for Romance Week but it doesn't seem like it at this point...

Considering the game is close to coming out, I'm good for waiting to learn about Merrill. I just hope we get her early in the game. I hated how I had to complete a plot event to get Zevran. Maybe she'll be like Wynne or Oghren where you can do the related plot quest where you can get them in any order you want again. Although, with this game jumping across a decade I don't know how likely that is. Still, I hope for Merrill early on.

As for Morrigan. I LOVED her. In the playthrough where I romanced her and got to know her, it changed my opinion of her. But I can see why people say she's a b****.

I never played Baldur's Gate, but wasn't Viconia a drow and therefore kinda vicious? And I sure as hell know that Morrigan could be vicious, though that was a fault of her upbringing.

I don't think Merrill is like that. She strikes as more of a wallflower than a raised-by-wolves type.

Let's blame Morrigan's ****iness on Flemeth :P
The Baldur's Gate games are awesome in my opinion. I consider the series my favorite RPG to this day, (not without nostalgic reasons).
Guessing we'll just have to wait and see how the romances turn out, but who knows? Maybe they're feeling generous over at Bioware this week.

Yup she's the "my sister cheated with my husband/slave , so I tied them both to a bed and set the bed on fire" type of girl. Intruiging woman all in all.

By wallflower you mean introvert or shy?

Maybe she'll be more like Sigrun than Velanna. I adored Sigrun, and her fascination with the surface world cracked me up.

V: "You just picked up a handful of dirt and smelled it."
S: "So, dirt smells good. Aren't elves supposed to be close to nature?"
V: "Figuratively! We don't stuff our noses in it!"

I wonder when Bioware will upload DA2 user pics.

I liked Sigrun until the moment I heard her say "Oh Commander, my Commander." Then I fell madly in love with her.

All the posts about Merrill killing people with her cuteness reminds me of Puss N' Boots from Shrek. She'll give everyone the big cute eyes, the bad guys will be too busy going "Awwwww...", then she'll take the opportunity to fireball them all to hell.

This, I agree completely...

On the subject of when we get Merrill... I think it's kinda up in the air but judging from the previews, they seem to suggest we get her within our first year of arriving in the free marches but not kirkwall. It seems the order of the companion meets is sibling( dependant on class), aveline, varric...after that it is kinda sketchy...though most would say Anders...so you can complete varric's deep roads quest( though I've seen previews of this quest with Fenris in the party, so I'm not sure...maybe it's a later run through there), then to sundermount for Merrill...and I believe Isabella and Fenris would follow that...or so is how it would seem if we factor laidlaw's play through in as well.
