Based on what we know about friendship supporting what the companion does and rivalry going against their goals with it at times being for the greater good, who thinks that the friendship path will cause her to try and seek out more blood magic and maybe cause something horrible since apparently friendship means you support her blood magic.

From a storytelling point of view; that's cool.

But from a "No Merrill no!" point of view.. God I hope not.

I hope it doesn't turn into something like that. I'd rather not see it become the "evil" choice and allow them to have it be a pragmatic choice.

If anything it may turn into a quest to rescue her.

I bet each companion will have quests that will occur based on what their relation is with you (Either friendly or rival)

Hope that's what happens as I don't want something bad like possession or her becoming evil just because I decided to be friends with her. That will be especially jarring when I romance her and she gets bad or something:unsure:

Yeah I hope there's some quest to save her.

I mean conner killed half of redcliff but he still got to live.

I really don't think that Merril will be possessed in DA2. We've already got Anders with that, it will be boring to have two mages possessed (though Anders isn't completely possessed, but it has a demon/spirit inside him, so I'll count him as "possessed" :P)

Yeah, may be there will be something else you have to save her from, but no boring possession.

In reality, I think that her personal mission will consist in trying to save her clan, since this seems the reason why she follows Hawke in Kirkwall.

Maybe Hawke can help her with her pariah status so she can rejoin her former dalish clan?

She wasn't exiled, she chose to leave... I think her clan doesn't even know what happened to her, maybe at one point in the game they'll send some hunters looking for her in and around Kirkwall?

It could be. I really wonder what is that lead her to leave her clan. Maybe (or probably) something related with the SPOILER

ritual, which ends in a big plot twist.

Actually according to the latest Gamestar article, that said [Spoiler] will lead to major event(s) in the game, multiple events not just one.

They exactly said "But the lady (Flemeth) calls up a small favor, which instantly triggers a chain of major events."

So probably this event triggers the main plot (whatever it is) of DA2. Very interesting. Anyway, I remember that Gaider said that every companion has a important role in the story, while some will be more important than others. Seeing while the event is related with Merrill (at least she's here, and this seems to make her mind and leave the clan), I get that she's going to be more important than other companions.

I hope so, when a character is tied to the main plot it's harder not to focus on them, this happened to me with Morrigan and Alistair in Origins even though I hated the first and never respected the second... If Merrill is indeed tied to the main plot of DA2 then I guess by the end of the game the Dalish might take a side (Hawke's) in the upcoming war.

Oh, I hope so. I love dalish. And archers (even in DAO, Leliana was pretty good with her bow :P). I especially like the fact that the dalish origins is the "noble" elf origin, like HN and DN, because keeper descend from the high noble of the Dales.

I agree about being the noble elf thing but too bad the elves don't acknowledge it :pinched:

No magic is truly good or evil. It's how it's used. Many assume blood magic is evil because at this point the most common way to learn it is through a demon. The idea of using your blood or your enemy's blood to power spells is no more evil than setting them on fire or using entropy magic to steal their lifeforce.

Of course many will make the argument that blood magic is a corrupting magic, but say it's corrupting because of the power. Considering what other magic spells can do, blood magic is not exactly a huge step up in terms of power. To say blood magic is evil because it makes you powerful and that corrupts you makes no sense. Power can corrupt. It's not guaranteed.

I don't see why people think that.  Is it just because that's how the specialization is learned for the PC?  Jowan never dealt with demons.  He's pretty apalled by the idea of dealing with them.  Most apprentices would sooner become abominations with contact with demons than learn Blood Magic, but apprentices are the group of people we hear about learning it the most in the tower

It seemed far more common that they learned it just by reading books or being taught by someone else.

A bit on and off topic but giving what we've read like as was pointed out in gameinformer, what kind of role dose Merill play, and what does this say of other team members, could all of them be along for the ride or could it play out the story, if so then maybe bio does have one hell of an RPG coming out. But Merill seems a bit odd in a manner, I mean Blood mage, "cute looking", leaves her people over something another, which makes me ask what help is she looking for, or even what is this help.

Which is probably why so much goes wrong with it to begin with.

There's such a stigma attached to Blood Magic that the mages are likely self-taught in that school of magic.

Which likely leads to them not being trained in it very well, making it easier for Demons to mess things up.

I know that but what I mean is that being friends means you support what a companion is doing no matter what it is they want, so befriending Merrill could mean that she could attempt to use more blood magic and deal with more demons which might end badly for her despite her good intentions. I really hope this doesn't happen but knowing Bioware something like this could occur as I think Gaider implied that friendship with some companions could end badly for them.

Most blood mages do learn their craft from demons. Ever read The Scrolls of Banastor? They're basically a "how to" manual on learning blood magic from demons for fun and profit.

"In the Fade dwell creatures both foul and fair, but all plague mankind with lusts and prides incalculable in our waking hours. Our power attracts them, and for good reason: our unique bridge between flesh and dreams is one way they can enter the realm of mortals. To begin the path to true power, court these poor, terrible creatures and best them. Force them into servitude or pledge your heart to them. Either way, you gain immense power and the means with which to tear holes in the world. "

"The creatures, these demons, require little in the way of bribery. Their natural state is one of longing for the world of flesh and blood. This is what you offer them: respite from their eternal search for true life. Engage them in a battle of wills, and you will be successful. Should you fail, the power will be yours, but your body will belong to the demon. Relish this infernal power while it lasts, for once you are an abomination, your demon half will soon swallow your mind."

"Finally, once you have come to ascend, have tasted the sweet nectar of the demonic blessing, rise anew, ascended, as a god. Through the connection between earth and sky, flesh and dream, blood and memory, you have risen above the petty concerns of the Chantry and her minions, past the notice of secular nobles and their petty squabbles. Through the rituals inscribed in these scrolls, you have mastered the minds of others, braved the temptations of the Fade, and quashed the terrible will of demons. Let no murder or theft weigh upon your mind, as your will is absolute, and the world is yours to claim. "

I wouldn't be surprised if Jowan learned blood magic from Uldred or one of his confederates. Uldred had been preparing for some time and was looking for like-minded mages to join his cause. Jowan might have learned a few blood magic tricks from one of these mages.

I hope it doesn't happen, either. Given that Merrill is heading into the unknown alone by joining Hawke, I'd rather start a friendship with her than a rivalry. I'd also be a hypocrite since I have every intention of learning and using blood magic.
