I don't really know why, but I quite like that old design of Merrill. But ultimately I'm glad Bioware went with her current look.

How does she even look? There are like four screenshots around, in which you can somewhat see her, if at all.

I was mostly referring to the first picture in the OP when I mentioned her current look. I prefer what we've seen of her in game so far to the concept art.

So, I daresay Merrill's early concept makes it fairly clear her character will have a twist that is quite a bit darker than "naive elf chick".



The artists at Bio had to base their concept off a description given by the writers, right? They can't have made them up from scratch. While this early art emphasized her ties with demons or blood magic or what have you, her current look is more related to her lack of world-savviness. Deceiving, in a way.



Anyway, this is my theory. Kind of clicks into place with the casting of Eve as Merrill's VA. When sher was first revealed, I would have expected Merrill to have an ethereal, high-pitched kind of voice; whereas the lovely Ms Myles sounds perkier, more mature and a touch deeper than what I had predicted.

For now I still think she will be a bit like Tali in ME. An outsider, far away from her kin in a strange world, she doesn't fully know or understand with only one person she really can trust.

I gotta say this is really what I hope they are doing with her.  When I first saw her I thought she was cute but when I heard she might be a bloodmage I became really interested.  I like the idea of being deceived by cuteness, sounds fun.

Your elf looks like every other fantasy elf I've ever seen.  Which I guess is why the Bioware artists get paid to draw elves while no one cares about yours.

She probably is. A german article said that here spec is Dalish Pariah, who mixed blood magic with elven magic.

Personally, if she does turn out to be a honest-to-goodness blood mage, I'm going to be very happy they went with her current look. The other one was kinda blatant. This one, as I said, is a nice twist.

I agree completely. I think her current look is much more subtle and overall just better.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading something about Merrill leaving the clan of her own accord. 

Leaving out of guilt (for dabbling in forbidden demon/blood magic stuff) does seem like the most probable option: her personal quest will perhaps involve assisting her in finding "help for her clan" so that she may redeem her name.

Or something completely different. Speculation is fun!

I'm thinking Merrill's leaving her clan is going to be a "holy crap, that was awesome, I'm stickin' with you guys!"
