What exactly do you mean by "strong women," and do you think you really think it's fair to judge women (or anyone) as "strong" or not?

Women that are stereotypically considered "butch."

Liara was barely legal for HER SPECIES. Mission was not a romance, and we don't know if Merrill will be.
Everyone is just assuming that she will be.

By asari standards she is a child, but by human standards she is anything but. And people aren't assuming she is a LI, they are just saying it would be strange if she was.

How many games have strong women who are lesbians in them? I can't think of one.

I think the best solution would be to make all women in games lesbians.  It's the only fair way to do it.  I shall gladly do my part.

So, a casual gamer who wandered in here to find out about the game is supposed to know that those two "squeeing" and talking like teenagers is normal for them? You don't think it might turn away someone who doesn't follow every developer religiously, in perhaps the same way that Evil Chris suggested excessive romance threads would be detrimental to sales?

If a casual gamer is turned away from the game by one of the writers acting a little silly in the middle of a thread for a little-known, but much anticipated character, perhaps this isn't the game for them. If they are turned off by the staff interacting with the fan rabble, there are plenty of developers who don't, maybe they would be more comfortable on those forums.

As for Merrill, she's very, er, pale. And thin. She could inhale and hide behind Hawke's bicep. Don't get me wrong, I've been hoping to see Merrill return, and I hope the screenshot isn't showing her at her best (as D. Gaider implies). It's just that I already had to suspend disbelief to have my elf Wardens as melee killing machines. Clearly elves have muscles like steel cables.

Actually, I'll admit that's one of the things I saw that seemed weird about her being pale.  I would usually expect the Dalish to be tan considering that they spend a lot of their time in the woods.  Maybe I need to look at the pic again and see if it's the lighting, or if it's just that they simply live in a part of the woods where not much light gets through .

Hmm, that's better. "Strong" is more ambiguous.

Yay Merrill. It'll be interesting to learn more about her. And I hope she mentions my Dalish elf Warden!

However, I hope they didn't change her personality too much. In DA:O she seemed fairly serious and level-headed, rather than cutesy.

All/most of the dalish in DA:O seemed to have been pale.

Not surprised as they seem to live in "dark" forests.

Not just gamers.

Absolutely true.

It's almost as bad as the 'athiests who lose their faith because life was hard' trope.

Perhaps, but I would not call the latter a cliche.

I'm more interested in Aveline as an LI at this point, but I sense this can change if/when we get a character page on the main website for Merrill.

Only ones I can think of are the ones where the player has to actively create one, like ME and Dragon Age. Other than that, no.

So if you don't want a strong woman who likes the ladies, don't make one in your game. Simple.

You know that heart-squeezy feeling you get when you see a basket of kittens or something?  Yeah, that's exactly what I felt when I saw this little elf.  She is unbelievably precious.  Seriously, I have never seen anything so damn adorable in my life.

Yes! This! You guys have no idea how cute Merrill is. I work here and and I still squee when she says things I haven't heard.

There's a lot of this in the writer pit:

Merrill (in-game): (something unbelievably cute)
Sheryl: GIGGLESQUEE!!!!! SO CUTE!!!
Mary: Hee hee.
Sheryl: She's so adorable I love her and want to hug her omgIcan'tbelievehowadorablesheisCAN-I-NOM-HER-HEAD?!
Mary: ... No.

This isn't meant to be a slight or anything, but how does one who acts like this on the internet get taken seriously as a writer? I have not heard so many instances of "squee" and "nom" from women on the 'net since I was early teens. When someone basically says that they behave in a manner similar to a teenager in real life, my faith in their ability to actually write a good story or character diminishes greatly. I really wish the writing team would exhibit Obsidian's level of professionalism in this case, as it reflects better on a title that I -want- to like as I have enjoyed the developers' past work.

I really hope this is not indicative of a shift in the quality of BioWare's future games.

I completely disagree with you in every possible level. Good writers need good imaginations, and who have better imagination than kids? So a slightly childish writer is not exactly a bad thing.

Remember, a childish person does not mean an imature person, sometimes people just like coloring the world more to their tastes, even if they aknowledge the reality is not as pretty.

Ah, yes. I suppose I should have said 'other than the PC.' Juhani is probably the closest as she was intended to be f/f only.

I agree and disagree, but since this is off topic and religion is a hot button issue, I'm not going to debate, although you seem reasonable enough.

Always think of the pokemon whenever I hear her name. Can't be helped, haha. She looks alright, I guess. Can't really complain considering not much has been shown of her.

How is this in any way indicative of her writing skills or the quality of her work (and BioWare's work in general)?

It reeks of a lack of professionalism, and this is the main reason why people do not take video games seriously as an artful expression. Acting like that in front of your fanbase is just asking for the development of a very toxic relationship with them.

And to address another point: Artists may be eccentric, but that is not eccentricity. It is behaving like you just found the internet and you are not yet out of high school. I realize they are grown and professional women, so I do not understand how they can be proud of the fact that their expression is directly transferable to that of someone much,  much more immature.

Also, no class needed for my douche-iness. I am willing to divulge my secrets for a modest sum.

I like you less and less (nothing against you as a person... I just thing we are too different and if I ever met you in real life I'd keep my distance)

You talk of professionalism like it's something good... well, putting aside the huge urge I'm having of making some terrible and probably unfair nationality-based analisys of you, I will just say what I think of professionalism.

It sucks.

At least when we are talking about stuff made for having fun (like games, movies and books!), I hate this concept some people have that just because a game/book or whatever has a serious story, a sad world or whatever, it can't have humour or nice moments, no matter how freaking terrible your life has been, as long as you don't have some very specif decease, you will still laugh, smile, and want to have fun, you are not going to be some dark sad person all the time!

Just look at Sten and his cookies!!! (And he even develops some humour if you get to know him well)

probably some kind of flower or something. maybe jewelry. a cute hairpin would be nice.

but it will probably also be something significant to dalish history? like an old artifact?

an ancient dalish music box that you have to repair would be super cute and romantic :)

Yes. And when BG2 came out and elves were the only romances (for guys), everyone was like "I hate elves, I'm sick of elves", and then no elves and then people are begging for elves, and then as soon as we get a female elf, there's gnashing of teeth and tearing of hair.

Its all quite amusing actually.
