I just figured out the endgame of DAII!!!
Cassandra seeks out anything on Hawke because it is MERRILL that is turning the world to war!I wrote this going, "Why am I doing randomness?" and I'm still thinking "Why did I type randomness?"
- If you max out her friendship path, she masters all schools of magic and wrecks havoc upon all corners of the globe without any hope of stopping her. Unless Cassandra can understand Hawke's technique of giving Merrill the ultimate hug that always derails her train of thought.
- If you max out her rivalry path, Merrill instead incites the populaces and controls most of the free world (and possibly the Qunari territories) with just her absolute cuteness. Only Hawke can make her mature up at that point and knock her out of a state of absolute cuteness and bring out the person behind those big eyes and that adorable smile.
Answer: [Goes back to appreciating Merrill]
Great job, Bioware. I haven't appreciated an RPG character like this in years... I'm not used to just messing around and being playfully random.
Ok, just one thing, that Isabela screen is from a cinematic, not actual game footage. But that Merrill is in game. Of course one would look better then the other.lastpatriot wrote...
Here is a comparison:
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of Isabella by any means but from frist glance, it just doesn't appear that Merrill was given the same level of development

I don't know if you can be absolutely sure about that just yet. Anything can happen really.
Maybe but as of now, Varric, Aveline, Anders and Merrill seem to be the only forced companions.
[Spoiler]
You can tell your sibling he can't come along with you anymore after you settle in Kirkwall.
We know Isabela and Fenris are optional, Anders is not, you need that map of his in order to go to the deep roads which is a main plot quest, and at the end of the "Long Way Home" quest, Merrill leaves with you for Kirkwall, again a main plot mission.

Are you sure? Has it been confirmed that Varric is a forced companion? Because I recall seeing somewhere, a dev - might have been Priestly or Gaider - said that you don't have to take Varric, and that he just makes it up as he goes along or says what people have confirmed (kind of like these speculation threads). I could be wrong - or they could be wrong - I don't know.

He's not gonna be forced as in you'll always have him in your party, but he'll always be there in the party selection screen, the expedition we go on with his brother is a main plot quest, so yeah no matter what you'll always recruit him.

I didn't mean in terms of the party, I meant in terms of the story. I never meant the party, that's stupid. I know some people have talked about "What if he's not in the party when stuff happens", but I didn't mean that.
