Frankly ladies(?), I hope not. I understand why you would want more F/F options but I don't want the DA world to become one where ludicrously all NPC companions fit this trope http://tvtropes.org/...in/EveryoneIsBi

Ehh.... so if both Isabela and Merill were bi that means EVERYONE is bi? :?

Why not? How would that affect you in any way if it did?

I don't mind the phrase, what I don't understand is the premise* some naysayers use that they got the design "right" the first time. If they (BW) thought it needed changing then it needed changing. It's their story and if they didn't think the Origins look suffciently expressed it... well. There you go.

Merrill is adorable :) Can't wait to see more of her.

(*I am so using this word wrong but you know what I mean)

Haha! Oh man......
I don't think she's that young, but she doesn't look near 18 either. Her breasts look out of proportion with the rest of her body.I'm sure she'll look different in the game.
The impression I got from her in the DE origin was that she seemed a bit annoyed and snarky. But now she seems chipper.Hmm...

It can effect personalities.. Its more realistic if not everybody is romancable and not everybody who is romancable is bi

I was getting ready to bolt my door and hide in the shadows there.;)

Just join in the DA2 Hot Rod Samurai drinking game! *pours a shot* :P

But I don't like alcohol! I will down a spoonful of Nutella instead. I expect to have gained a few dress sizes by the time it's released.

Agreed, but if it's done right (that is, if the character's sexuality fits their personality and doesn't feel forced on them), there's no harm done.

I would understand if Merill (should she actually be a LI in the first place) was straight (just like I did with Morrigan in Origins). I just *hope* that isn't the case.

Hah. I realize that I'm damaging my impressive WPP average, as this may be my first post ever under 300 words, but I found the above statement highly amusing. Well done.

Because it feels like fanservice and breaks my immersion. I don't even mind if they have an exclusive single-sex romance, but if we're getting only a few companions, out of which there are only a few LIs, all or more of them being bi makes it unrealistic for me.

Sorry for the derail, I don't want this cluttering up the Merrill thread. So she gets sent to Kirkwall with Hawke? Wonder why? What interests do the Dalish have here? Stolen elves for slaves?

Perhaps the dalish banished her.
Or the (some of) dalish moved there. I think I actually heard of there being a dalish presence in the free marches anyway.

I think it will be like that rule about naming stuff in Dragon Age. Sometimes when you first see a character they look a bit wrong.

But at a later point you can't imagine them being any different. You look at Merril and see some cool Elf chick in her early 20s.

Initially I thought she looked like one of the ghost children in Jade Empire.  But after reading a bit about her personality, she started to look a bit different.

It probably is fanservice. As long as the character is written well, I don't see that as a bad thing, though.

Yeah like Carver. Same thing here especially with the bad camera angle. I'll wait for more substantive footage.

I don't think everyone hated elves in Origins. We certainly thought they looked too much like humans with pointy ears, however, which is a big reason for the change. For those who liked elves in Origins just fine, I think a bit of adjustment is perfectly understandable-- and maybe some allowance that some of them will never like it at all. C'est la vie.

Soo... visual retcon, just like that?

Hot Rod Samurai, not visual retcon, Hot Rod Samurai.

What does that even mean?  LOL  Do you know?

I believe this is the etiology of Hot Rod Samurai:

From Matt Goldman:

Before, I think Origins was kind of like Death Dealer meets The Hobbit. It was half really “raah, scary” and half really whimsical. We wanted  to take it into more of a desolate feel and kind of strip it down to a  hot-rod Samurai look.

Its like the most absurd, nonsensical marketing hype term you can come up with that makes no sense at all. Heh, I find it funny that they criticize Origins for looking too whimsical, when poor Merrill looks far more whimsical than anything in Origins ever did.

Oh my... where to start.

Those of you who informed me that "grown women squee and use Internet LOLspeak like 'nom'", that's fine. That's just fine. I am willing to believe that some do. But the plural of "anecdote" is not "data". Out of the... I don't know... hundreds? Thousands? Of women I've known in my life - even if we limit it to the hundred or two I've known since 2006 or so, which is when I first noticed such language - none of them have talked like that. I associate it with the kind of "grown women" who write Cloud/Sephiroth slashfic. But hey, that's just my experience.

Wait, I do know a girl who talks like that - my 16-year old cousin who is obsessed with Pokemon.

But really it's just the greater point that presenting yourself to your audience opens the door for an impression to be made. If Gaider and Chris started posting conversations in the style of Jersey Shore "bro-speak" or Southern redneck slang, sure I could accept that "they're just having fun" but the way a person expresses themself, whether "having fun" or not, colors my perception of them. That's only human - perception is 9/10 of reality.

If BioWare is comfortable with presenting their writers to their fans in that way, that's their prerogative. But to expect no negative reaction is naive to put it mildly.

I did not know the origin of that term. That might be the stupidest description I've ever read.
