Simply put, male and female Hawkes have different stories written about them. Therefore, the characters are themselves slightly different in each. Hawke isn't changing something predefined, but is simply a participant in a story that differs from that of the other Hawke.
That isn't quite what i'm referring to, though. Even taking each playthrough separately, in each case you get effectively a story where the protagonist
just so happens to, purely by accident, wind up grouped with two homosexual characters of his/her own gender. If the PC happens to be homosexual himself/herself the odds of that are somewhere between 0.3-0.0008% depending what statistics you follow. This... just isn't very good odds. (and it drops even lower when we include two characters of the opposite gender who just as randomly happen to be heterosexual. And let's not get into odds of Hawke's particular appearance/personality just happening to be right up the alley of all these people, even though they're wildly different from one another)
And without acting coy we do know this unlikely outcome happens only because of the PC, who is basically shaping the world and the preferences of these he/she meets to fit his/her own persona by his/her mere presence.
