That thing on Merril's back? Not a staff.

It's a giant blunt.

It's actually a digeridoo. Merrill has such an adorably perky Australian accent.

Well didn't Gaider say that the 'virginal girl-next-door' isn't necessarily Merrill?

But true, it is difficult to figure who else it might be if not her. I doubt there are any more female companions to reveal, unless this other girl is an LI who doesn't ever join the party?

Er... Jennifer was talking archetype, not describing the actual sexual history of any of the characters.

So even the petite elf who's supposed to be the "virgin girl next door" has melons the size of her head? The lead character designer must looove him some boobies.

I eagerly await an actual introduction of Merrill, so people can see her from another angle and can just get the hell over this obsessive notion that she has giant breasts. She does not.

Actually, after all the people making a fuss we immediately ran and shrank down her breasts. We were just listening to you guys. Honest. Posted Image

Lol, no one is saying it can't be done. Just that it's kind of silly to not wear shoes when you have them available to you. There are a lot of risks associated with walking barefoot everywhere, especially in urban areas, and your feet aren't gonna look all soft and pretty. Whatever, it's not a big deal, just a silly design choice that makes me laugh. If there's suddenly a lore reason and magic feet poultices, I will lol forever.

Some elves apparently don't like shoes.

Really, if this is where it breaks down for someone, I'd have to giggle. I suspect you all just don't have enough to talk about. ;)

Evidently some people take me seriously even with the Posted Image.

The Gentle Ben wrote...
Well, a triviality can still be ridiculous, and I have to agree with yukidama that this would appear to qualify. If this sort of design decision is a consequence of a singular companion outfit than I would score one for the opposition (Companion specific clothing is fine by me, but the idea that the choice was between complete variation and a single outfit always struck me as an obviously false dichotomy. Design multiple outfits per character (I'm aware that it was in all likelihood a resource decision, especially as it pertains to cinematics, but that was not the reasoning put forward)). By placing the onus for clothing selection on the developers, the implementations put forth would seem to be more fairly open to criticism.

Or people could get over the notion that they need to choose their companion's outfits in addition to their own. Really, I just think people like to obsess. The fact that you could change companion outfits in DAO didn't stop anyone from nit-picking over their appearance or whipping up alternate appearance mods to suit.

Traditionally, people don't need help from us in order to make mods. Though it certainly helps.

(although i'd question whether it's such a good idea to let the artists call the shots like that, considering supposedly number of questionable design elements in ME2 like the whole "weapon reloading" stuff and the widely mocked vacuum breathing masks were result of listening to the artists' whims perhaps a tiny bit too much)

And I'd say it's just as questionable whether a fan's whims regarding what they consider "realistic" or pleasing should be more valid than an artist's... or a writer's, for that matter. Get over yourselves.

But just as it's your game, WE buy it.  WE, as a consumers, have a right to voice our opinion.

Yes? Did I say that fans didn't have a right to comment as they wish?

I said what's questionable is the idea that the fan's idea of what's pleasing is MORE valid than an artist's, the original comment being that the artists are obviously doing whatever they wish without care or oversight-- as if they didn't care about the setting. An artist being concerned only with what looks good is just as bad as a fan caring only about what is realistic. We all wear our blinders.

I did not say the fan's concern was LESS valid then the artist's. If someone wants to groan about shoeless elves-- by all means. Knock yourselves out. It's your dollar, after all. Posted Image

According to the DA Wiki, you're right, but in the codex for it, there is no mention of all the Dalish undertaking it - just the mages. Actually it doesn't specify which clan members exactly, I take that back. I guess it must have been interpretted that way.

All Dalish have vallaslin-- those are the tattoos you see on their faces. It's a rite of passage for adulthood.

The outfit Merrill wears in the game that you've already seen, was built from another concept. Early on it was cut from the game due to technical issues. Its original incarnation did not fit her own personality or VO either (The concept was a tad risqué). Thus this newer costume concept was drawn up to replace it.

....But we liked her original outfit enough that we spent the extra time to make the necessary revisions mixing both worlds and pushed it in the game :)

He's saying the first concept art of Merrill didn't work because of technical issues and because it was a bit too sexy. But they still liked that art, so they incorporated elements from it into her re-design. The finished product is the Merrill that we've all seen in screenshots and which adorns the first page of this thread.

I guess this discussion of how risque clothing wouldn't fit Merrill's personality means she won't be pole-dancing at the Kirkwall strip club on weekends.

I preferred my confusing, roundabout way of describing this......but thank you  hehe

Complistic wrote...

Ah, that's making more sense. If that devs still around, could you tell us if she's got more than 1 outfit?

Why spoil the fun? You'll just have to wait and see!

Wait so which one is the first concept art that didn't work because it was too sexy? Is that the concept art on her character page?

It isn't, it's old and whether or not it gets released anytime soon is beyond me. I hope it will be though, you'd all get a kick out of it for sure

I love that idle animation she has were she suddenly looks back twice and checks if something happened.

For the longest time, she did that animation on the party picker screen when you clicked on her. I liked to imagine she was the only one who spotted the big moving spotlight that highlights characters, and it startled the heck out of her. "Woah! Did anyone else see that?"

You were the one writing her am I right? I wondered if you have any influence on the voice actors behavior. I mean do you stand in the recording studio with em and say "Yes that how Merrill would sound!" or "Hmm...can you sound a bit more nervous?"

Writers do sit in on the recording sessions whenever possible, but a lot of that is done by our VO director, who is excellent.

If you don't support blood magic and demons, why do you even like Merrill? That's like saying you like Oghren but disapprove of vulgarity. It's their raison d'etre.

She never used blood magic until she wanted to cleanse the mirror. Id like for her to stop using it.

That's exactly what the rivalry path is there for.

Don't think of it as being a jerk. Think of it as tough love. You don't have to be mean to her. You just have to try to stop her. There should be options for that.

Is the carving tool what sets the romance into rivalry? Like can I give it to her, and still go with the rivalry path?

If you give her the carving tool, she should be set in friendship. Refusing to give it to her should stick you in the rival path.
