But with the thing about Merrill living with us, I hope she doesn't try to get us some communication service or different color paint job we don't want for our place.

I actually think that this thing about living together is how they will make the player settle for one romance.
In DA:O Alistair, Leliana or Zevran would confront a female character if she romanced more than one of them. In DA:2 i think you can flirt and visit everyone to an extent and then decide on which character you wish to keep as "partner" of sorts.

Also note that all character related quests will have to be completed to engage in the full romance this time around.
I also remember reading that there was a decisive point in act 1 where you had to do something, i just don't remember anymore

 i admit, merill is indeed cuter than the BH companion, just wasn't fleshed out at the time.

and i wonder who would win in a fight between merill and isabela?

Merrill would wipe the floor with Isabela (because F!Hawke will tank the sh** out of Isabela while encouraging Merrill to kill it with fire... or with demons). In my game of course.
