Yeah the rivalmance was very well done I think. The only thing that confuses me is her class indicator. Like when you're full rival it describes her as an outcast or something, but if you romance her it's clearly not the case.

I know what you mean...I think it says something like "Merrill has learned that she can only ever depend on herself", which is true.  Even if romanced, Hawke might not always be around.  I don't think this undermines the Merrill/Hawke relationship/romance in anyway, however....she's just less dependent on Hawke.

I my self prefer rival Merrill my self. It's just more interesting and when Merrill calls Hawke a Shemlin and kicks her out of her house, I just sat there staring at my tv. It was a well written scene and I could tell that she was very upset, also the make up scene at Hawkes mansion was well done too.

It was shocking, yes....we were such good friends!!!!

I think the whole rival path brings out another side of Merrill, which is good if you want to delve deeper into her character, even if it's bad for Hawke :P

Sometitmes what feelsl ike a betrayal is really helping you. Merrill relises this is after the argument but it's understandable why she would be very upset at first, it makes her character very intresting.

Could be a dev issue. Merrill is one of the few characters where it's better to be a rival since while you are her friend you worry for her and want to stop her from this dangerous path.

Yeah, it seems like the rival path isn't as mean as I thought it was, though I guess it can be if you make it. It mostly just shows you worry and it seems in the end it seems she actually realizes that.

I mean really I can say I think I like both her friendship path and rival path now.

So for clarification, can you have a friendship romance and still make her get rid of that mirror?

From what I'm told, the friendship version has her crying infront of the mirror. And the rival version she destroys it. I've also heard it disappears after all quests with her are done, but the rival version is the only one where you see her destroy it.

Well, it's just that "I" (as in my thought on everything while playing) thought that by helping her I was going to get her killed. And I didn't want any harm to come to her. And I felt like that's what was going to happen if I gave her the item she wanted. So I refused, but kept telling her I was doing it because I want to help her, and I didn't believe she knew what she was doing. I thought she was playing with fire. And she hated me for it, and kicked me out of the house. I even gave her a gift to show that I'm sorry I hurt her feelings, but she still wanted to be left alone. And then she comes by the house, says she's sorry, and I'm telling her I'm not going to give up on her. It felt honest and real. To me anyways. If you thought she would successed, then I guess you'd disagree.

Plus I love drama. I think it adds more to a romance if you see all sides of a character, and love them still. Not just the nice and friendly parts.

Okay, I agree and feel the same way about it.  Angst is great!

I never thought she would succeed (the majority of mortals don't end up benefiting when they consort with demons, especially Pride demons) but when I RP'd a blood mage, I had her go along with Merrill's plans as she has similar views on magic.  My rogue Hawke did not.

Well to be honest they both end with her getting rid of the mirror. The rival path basically has you taking a more active role in having her get rid of it.

Eitherway Marethari will die though. It just really depends on what's your cup o' tea I suppose.

Yeah I can see that. I saw a rivalmance earlier and it basically had Merrill talking about how much better Hawke was than her and how stupid she was and it kinda made me mad sad to be honest. The one I saw today though seemed much more kind hearted. Like you're really trying to defend her and she just doesn't get it. It's more like one of those "You'll hate me right now but thank me later for this."

Eh, allright, thanks for the answer people.
I... think I'll postpone the romance stuff for a bit later, until Bioware fixes their blasted game. Poor Merrill seems to be the only companion with bugfest quests.

Well Marethari dying isn't a bug. She does that no matter what. The only bug Merrill seems to have is basically the chronological bug where A New Path's wrap up plays at the beginning of act III.

Yeah, Mirrell destroys the Mirror, and then in the next scene starts complaining about how it's not working. It was a "" moment.

Yeeeah. I really hope they fix that soonish. I've been wanting to start another play through but the only thing keeping me from doing it is that. As far as I know the bug has been logged and they're looking into it amongst a lot of other things. All we can do right now is have faith in bioware that they'll fix it.

Which I hope they do... I mean I've been supportive of them this whole time. And really some of the bugs are easily shrugged off. But this one... I dunno this one really is kind of embarrasing. I'm surprised no one ever caught it before release, it just seems so obvious.

Though no one's perfect I suppose, some things slip through the cracks.

Kind of a shame too, I really did like the game. Bug chronological things tend to really throw me off and sort of ruin moments.

I mean especially in the case of Merrill's quest. Her whole clan has the potential to die and because of that bug you never hear a single word on it.

Yeah, I was playing a mage who was trying to decide on what to be. And I've seen a lot of horrible stuff come from bloodmagic in DA2. But I loved Merrill, and knew she was a pure-hearted person. So the two kept clashing. Which is why I prefer starting out as a friend, and being switched to a rival. It felt honest for my playthrough because I didn't believe what she was doing was right. Whereas in the friendship version, I felt like I was lying to her just to get into her pants. And that didn't feel right to me. I prefer the relationship work with my character still being honest. He ended up being a Spirit Healer and a Force Mage. Force to be able to protect her more, and Healer after dealing with so much death in his life. It was her job to fill the bloodmage spot in the partnership.

Is there some type of quota in dual-mage relationships? One has to be the blood mage and the other a spirit healer? XD

The blood magic never bothered me, just where she learned the blood magic from. I'm of the belief that blood magic isn't inherently evil, and she was using it to benefit others, ultimately.

Yeah I'm daring Bioware to make a Tevinter blood mage appear in the next game who's NOT evil.

I still say though, that Merrill's blood magic isn't what got her into trouble. The mirror is what did that.

I hope not, her blood magic and demon contacts are the only reason insane Hawke keeps her around.
