You know what else I love about Merrill? Her skill trees. She's about as physically intimidating as a puppy dog in the rain, but she kicks serious butt. By the end of the game, she was doing far more damage than my mage Hawke and she never fell in battle.

She's smarter than me too. I'd have fun casting inferno and fireball at groups of mooks, turn around and she'd have petrified the scarabas or blood mage. Valiantly hacking away at the enemy that could kill everyone else in a matter of seconds but that I'd failed to notice.

I agree, Merrill's skill trees are awesome - I just wish she had Heal though, then I wouldn't have to have two mages in my party constantly. Yes, I know there's a mod, but that just feels like cheating :P

My unstoppable Rogue and Merrill work very well together ;)

One of the many things that I miss when having her in my party. Gotta stack on a lot of potions because of that.

However, I find her earth and electricity tree (or whatever it is called) very useful. Especially Petrify, Rock Armor and Chain Lightning.

I was pretty annoyed when I realised she couldn't take heal (went through each specialisation three times to check I hadn't missed it) but I just ended up spamming potions. Money is pretty easy to come by in game so it was easy enough. Although I do miss the days of DA:O where you could spam two healers lol.

I just simply refuse to have Anders in my squad again after what he did in Act 3! Total nutter!

With Merrill in the party on Normal you almost never need a healer, after a full Primal tree that is. I decided to downgrade to Normal after beating the game on Hard, too much frustration.

PLUS, she is the cutest thing, ever.

edit : Sarcastic Hawke's response to Pol trying to get away from Merrill sums it up best.

Yeah the rivalmance was very well done I think. The only thing that confuses me is her class indicator. Like when you're full rival it describes her as an outcast or something, but if you romance her it's clearly not the case.

Could be a dev issue. Merrill is one of the few characters where it's better to be a rival since while you are her friend you worry for her and want to stop her from this dangerous path.

lool better? i prefer to be loving Merrill friendromace version  and be worried about her all the time and have her maybe a bit obsessed about MeHawke-but pure and innocent  than more combat efficient and using nasty blood magic that would certainly corrupt her as mentally she's very fragile

It seems to me the rival version is where you attempt to dissuade her from using blood magic and consorting with demons while in the friend version, you support it (and support her decisions no matter what, basically).

I think both paths are loving as being in a relationship isn't all about doing/agreeing with whatever your parnter wants, especially if it's something that can get them hurt.  However, people still have preferences for one flavor over the other which is okay.  I would say it seems the end of the romance for both paths are similar, but the paths to get there differ.

Part of the reason that makes the DA games so replayable.

Next game, will probably go for the Merrill rivalry romance. Hopefully, is't not like turning Dawn Star bad. That was terible. I can't imagine trying to harden Merrill >_<

After viewing the video of the rivalmance of Merrill, i think it is like 'hardening' from DA:O. The rival special attribute is that Merrill learns she has no one but herself to rely on in the world versus having Hawke support her.

If you play her off as a rivalry, she is essentially a broken soul. She doesn't want to be saved by Hawke because she believes that she is not worthy of being saved. Or the "you are too good to be with someone like me" line. She warns him off by saying that Hawke and everyone he loves will be in danger (danger from who? herself?) While the love scene is the same and she says she loves Hawke and apologized for saying stupid things, Hawke is telling her she doesn't say stupid things. It's a constant reassurance that needs to be given to Merrill.

In the friend romance, Merrill doesn't come off hating herself. She doesn't feel like she doesn't deserve Hawke as a companion, she says she doesn't want to change him to be more elf-like... He also does not address her stupid comment while they are in bed and just tells her he loves her because he doesn't have to tell her that she doesn't say stupid things. Their relationship is considerably more healthy because Hawke supported Merrill so that she could resolve her issues herself.

I think the conversation in the gallows near the end of the game takes on a different tone based on the friend/rival decision as well. I thought I saw a video on YouTube, but can't find it now.

I think in the long run, a rivalmance relationship with Merrill will not end well. If she still has these deep rooted issues about her self-esteem and that she doesn't deserve saving, she will eventually drift away from Hawke because deep down she will think that the only reason Hawke is with her is more out of pity than true love.

But that is just my opinion of course.

Which is something good about DA2 compared to ME2. You're relationship matches how you are with them, and how you personally see them. It's not like Mass Effect where I can treat Jack like crap or treat her nice, and yet nothing changes between her and me. Or I can disagree with Garrus, and yet we're still on the same path as if I was agreeing with him. It's more personal this time, and not as simple as being mean or good. If you disagree then it shows. And if you agree, then it shows. Which makes your relationship with them more personal.

well and heres is my key point which i kept to myself until now
from the moment Merrill used the blood magic [and effectively hurt herself] at the beginning [while going with that Flemeth item to the altar]
i wanted her to stop using blood magic but did not wanted to hurt her feelings like the rival path does.
i soo wanted option number 3 which was not given-and that is: [conversation preferably at Hawke's house after the romance is "confirmed" [probably when the "mirror thing" starts to come up or something]  so here goes dialogue:
***most pure path *the top right one* described  here the wheel options could make Hawke use different words but oucome would be the same***
*dialogue starts*
*Hawke approaches Merrill*
Hawke:
Merrill....
Merrill:
yes ma velan? [or it's something like that :P]
Hawke:
i wanted to talk with you about something....

Merrill:
what is it?
Hawke:
i know you are beautiful, smart, cute and lovely but you are that mostly because you are so fragile and pure at the same time-and i want you to stay that way
Merrill:
thank you, but....what do you mean?
Hawke:
i want you to stop dealing with demons and blood magic to fix that mirror
Merrill:
but Hawke...i need to restore that mirror!
Hawke:
i cannot stand how are you corrupting yourself with that evil blood magic ....but if its the only way ... i cannot let you corrupt yourself and therefore if you really insist on dealing with blood magic use my blood not your own
Merrill:
but Hawke!
Hawke:
Merrill....i love you too much to let you corrupt yourself that is why if someone must be hurt for your precious mirror to be completed -let it be me instead of you-  i do not want you to feel the pain of blood magic let me carry the burden of suffering  for you so you could stay pure
Merrill:
oh Hawke! *long kiss*
  *main dialogue ends*
well it may be not written smooth but you know what i mean right?

I have yet to finish the rival romance fully (and don't want to watch it to avoid spoiling) but she basically says this in the friend romance too, perhaps only worded differently.

Yeah, the scenes where she's broken is when she just killed her Keeper or clan. It matches what happened, and Hawke is telling her he's not afraid of her (unlike her people), and that he still loves her. She's just realizing if she listened to Hawke 3 years ago, or her Keeper, then no one would have died.

I rewatched the friend romance and she does not beat herself up when she visits you at her home. She just states that she was thinking about Pol's reaction to her (and blaming herself for his demise) and the mirror. She talked about how the Elves would have a kingdom yadda which seems to indicate that she admires him for who he is and what he has accomplished.

The rival romance is nothing like that.

Wait, you can also have rival romances with companions??

That, I did not know.

I assumed that romances could only be achieved with having a high enough friendship score...

Either way, I don't know if I'm gonna do that.

Sounds like you're scene is before the Keeper's death. Whereas the Rival one is after the Keeper's death. (or suppose to be I'm guessing).

Here's what Mary Kirby told me in PM:

TMALIVE: Considering a bug is messing up the order of things, what would you say is the correct scene order for the friendship and rival romance, from her Act 2 quest to after her Act 3 quest?

Mary Kirby: The ideal order (which may not happen just due to when you happen to get enough approval, even when the bug is fixed) is for the romance to happen after her Act 2 quest. You can get the romance scene in Act 3 if that's when you hit 50 approval, but she's going to be talking about Act 2 stuff when it happens.

OK, the scenes depend on rival/friend amounts and can happen in either Act 2 or 3, but it makes more sense if it occurs in Act 2.  I think I got it.

There was no quest marker for it?

I only usually talk to my companions in their areas when I see something come up in the quests.
