I know this is probably a little off-topic, and I apologize for that but I'm just a little curious. It seems like no matter what I do I can only get rivalry with Merrill. I really would like to get Friendship with her to see if that be any different than what I've been seeing. Thanks in advance if anyone has any suggestions.

Well support her in everything regarding the mirror and dont try to kill demons when choice given or slam the use of magic. That should give you all you need for friendship.

She did in my playtrough. I fought on Merediths side and Merril said something like "The decision was laid into your hands, theyre is nothing you could do."

I think so. Or it's when you get 100% friendship with her. I don't quite remember, since I got both with her.

It's romance only really. I had 100 percent friend for a while and nothing happened until I got the love scene.

How? Are you being terribly mean to poor Merrill?

- support mages
- don't be too harsh on abominations
- support blood magic
- support the Dalish
- in general, do nice things

I was able to get friendship with her, and I was hard on blood magic...

As long as you give her that carving tool, then you will get a lot of friendship from her

i totally don't agree with go easy on demons and support blood magic -i was totally against those 2 things and got full friendship so: BAN BLOOD MAGIC and die evil demons!

I was actually nice to her, but refused to give her that blasted thing at the end of her quest. Didn't lose a point. Is it supposed to be like that when you max out the friendship/rivalry bar?

I love Merrill, was kind of ticked off that her story bugged out on me on my second Hawke, and I didn't get to see the final scene with her as that was my Merill rival save. Don't think I'll be going that route again since Hawke+Merrill=BFFs.

Yes. Once you're maxed, there will be no more changes.

I had a lot of friendship, and when I didnt give her the tool I got like 130 rivalry points.

Oh, thank you. Then its rivalry for me I suppose. 

Im just a bit confused on how rivalry works. I keep thinking of disapproval from DAO when I get rivalry points.

Yeah, I always feel bad when I see anyone get rivalry. I have to stop thinking of it as something bad like disapproval was.

I wish we had a proper tutorial on the new system.

Don't think of it as being a jerk. Think of it as tough love. You don't have to be mean to her. You just have to try to stop her. There should be options for that.

That sounds good. I saw the scene where she tells you to go away, and I thought that the romance would be over so I never tried it. 

Is the carving tool what sets the romance into rivalry? Like can I give it to her, and still go with the rivalry path?

If you give her the carving tool, she should be set in friendship. Refusing to give it to her should stick you in the rival path.
