BTW: Is it true that refusing to give her the carving tool gives you like... 100 points or rivalry? That sounds enough to turn the Friendship path into Rival in a matter of seconds no?

That said, you're crazy for not supporting blood magic. I have no idea what's got everybody so dead set against it. So a bunch of people turn into mindless abominations--they're just doing it wrong! Merrill and the magisters have it right.
(Can I say that when Fenris said that Merrill would end up a magister someday (or like one, at least), I thought "I hope so!!")

What really got me was the description for the rivalry with Merrill in her specialization skill tree. It made it sound like a bad thing.
It does, but think of it as her being more independent. She simply doesn't need someone to look after her all the time.

And just by having the power puts her at risk of being tranquil if caught.
In the end, it'll always put her and others in danger.

Or not, I'd rather wait until Bios fix her Mourning and The New Path quest. :/

It is. I started at 75% friendship, and then went 75% rival just by making that choice.

If you give her the carving tool, she should be set in friendship. Refusing to give it to her should stick you in the rival path.
I was already 100% friendly before getting the option to give her the carvind tool or not. I didn't gave it to her but because it was already full, nothing changed.
And I'm romancing her as a blood mage. So while I don't have anything against BM's or Demons, I hate those mages that try to kill me with it - which is like every BM.
On a different note: I noticed that Ineria (Elf that walks around in the Dalish camp) has Merrill's concept armor on. Too bad Merrill doesn't have it because it look pretty cool.

I know this is probably a little off-topic, and I apologize for that but I'm just a little curious. It seems like no matter what I do I can only get rivalry with Merrill. I really would like to get Friendship with her to see if that be any different than what I've been seeing. Thanks in advance if anyone has any suggestions.
Well support her in everything regarding the mirror and dont try to kill demons when choice given or slam the use of magic. That should give you all you need for friendship.
I do support her, and I'm nice to her. But everything I do its just + rivalry. Though I have to admit it shocked the hell out of me when she kicked my character out of her home then later came over to apologize to him, where they proceeded to make out and do the deed. Not really sure how that all occured but I got a kick out of it anyways.

So just to get this straight, Merrill can only be stopped from using blood magic through the full Rivalmance thing? You can't be friends with her but pick all the rivalry options that expressly don't approve of blood magic and tell her off for using it? If so, that's a helluva choice...
(Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just want to be absolutely sure.)
You don't have to romance her. You do have to be full-rivalry to get her to stop using blood magic.

Doesn't she generally give it up either way, when her companion quest is complete and Marethari is dead?

No, she keeps it if you're on her friendship path. It's just confusing at the moment because of the bug. (Which I've been promised should be fixed in the patch.) If you're a rival, she smashes the mirror. If you're a friend, she keeps working on the mirror and remains a blood mage.

Huh, really? Because in my friendship thing she essentially just put the mirror away it looks like. is that the bug then? Does she also stop being a bloodmage from a gameplay standpoint?
Also I don't know if you want to answer this but it's been running around the thread a little bit. Does a rival romance result in her, I don't know, not liking Hawke or something? Or really being a complete outcast?
It's just that if you romance her as a rival the class description seems to clash a bit with what seems to be going on. It mentions her not having anyong or whatever. So I guess my question is, does she appreciate Hawke in the end for not agreeing with her?
Also really good news hearing her mourning quest and Act III bug will get fixed.
