No, it will be very difficult to give it to her and still go on the rivalry path, if it's even possible. I don't think that it's possible. Refusing to give it to her gives her 105 rivalry.

What really got me was the description for the rivalry with Merrill in her specialization skill tree. It made it sound like a bad thing.

Allright, I guess I am just too used to seeing the red stuff as the "aggresive selfish ****** jerk lines" from Mass Effect.

BTW: Is it true that refusing to give her the carving tool gives you like... 100 points or rivalry? That sounds enough to turn the Friendship path into Rival in a matter of seconds no? :P

Well, if you're dead set on something and people around you disagree, you sort of feel like they don't appreciate you, no? The Keeper is trying to urge her away from blood magic too, but I don't think there's anybody closer to Merrill than Marethari. Rivalry just means you don't condone their lifestyle, but it's not hatred per se: esp. not if you do the romance path.

That said, you're crazy for not supporting blood magic. I have no idea what's got everybody so dead set against it. So a bunch of people turn into mindless abominations--they're just doing it wrong! Merrill and the magisters have it right. :P

(Can I say that when Fenris said that Merrill would end up a magister someday (or like one, at least), I thought "I hope so!!")

It does, but think of it as her being more independent. She simply doesn't need someone to look after her all the time.

I think Merrill at the end of the Rivalry path just doesn't want to risk turning into an abomination, or causing trouble with Hawke, or misusing it to control what others believe. Bloodmagic allows the veil to be opened completely so that demons may physically pass through it into our world. It is also harm magic, in which the user must harm themselves and drain their own blood, or the blood of someone else (against their will possibly) to be used. And the uses are mostly to cause damage. Whatever good it does may come at the cost of the death of another. You can also use it to control others thoughts and invade their dreams. And the temptation to take just a little more blood, might add addiction to the list.

And just by having the power puts her at risk of being tranquil if caught.

In the end, it'll always put her and others in danger.

So it is settled then. I'll go with the Rivalmance.

Or not, I'd rather wait until Bios fix her Mourning and The New Path quest. :/

It is. I started at 75% friendship, and then went 75% rival just by making that choice.

I was already 100% friendly before getting the option to give her the carvind tool or not. I didn't gave it to her but because it was already full, nothing changed.
And I'm romancing her as a blood mage. So while I don't have anything against BM's or Demons, I hate those mages that try to kill me with it - which is like every BM.

On a different note: I noticed that Ineria (Elf that walks around in the Dalish camp) has Merrill's concept armor on. Too bad Merrill doesn't have it because it look pretty cool.

TMA - to be quite fair, the use of mana is also physically taxing. It's a matter of degree: greater expenditures yield greater dividends.

But you can bleed to death. I don't think lack of mana can kill you.

Permanent lack of mana would mean you were a Tranquil.

So just to get this straight, Merrill can only be stopped from using blood magic through the full Rivalmance thing? You can't be friends with her but pick all the rivalry options that expressly don't approve of blood magic and tell her off for using it? If so, that's a helluva choice...
(Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just want to be absolutely sure.)

I know this is probably a little off-topic, and I apologize for that but I'm just a little curious. It seems like no matter what I do I can only get rivalry with Merrill. I really would like to get Friendship with her to see if that be any different than what I've been seeing. Thanks in advance if anyone has any suggestions.

Well support her in everything regarding the mirror and dont try to kill demons when choice given or slam the use of magic. That should give you all you need for friendship.

I do support her, and I'm nice to her. But everything I do its just + rivalry.  Though I have to admit it shocked the hell out of me when she kicked my character out of her home then later came over to apologize to him, where they proceeded to make out and do the deed.  Not really sure how that all occured but I got a kick out of it anyways.

You don't have to romance her. You do have to be full-rivalry to get her to stop using blood magic.

Alright, thanks for the reply. I'll be sure to remember that.

What does she do with the mirror in a friendship relationship? I know in rivalry she shatters it, does she do the same in friendship?

I cant really tell because of the bug. It just vanished.

There's a bug with the friendship romance too, where the end of the quest displays before you actually get her quest, so there's no way to tell if there are different outcomes or not.

Yeah I got that cutscene too, before I started that quest, and I was utterly confused.

Doesn't she generally give it up either way, when her companion quest is complete and Marethari is dead?

No, she keeps it if you're on her friendship path. It's just confusing at the moment because of the bug. (Which I've been promised should be fixed in the patch.) If you're a rival, she smashes the mirror. If you're a friend, she keeps working on the mirror and remains a blood mage.

Ok, now Im sure that I have to go rivalry with her. I thought she got rid of it in both rivalry and friendship.

Now I just have to wait for the patch.

Huh, really? Because in my friendship thing she essentially just put the mirror away it looks like. is that the bug then? Does she also stop being a bloodmage from a gameplay standpoint?

Also I don't know if you want to answer this but it's been running around the thread a little bit. Does a rival romance result in her, I don't know, not liking Hawke or something? Or really being a complete outcast?

It's just that if you romance her as a rival the class description seems to clash a bit with what seems to be going on. It mentions her not having anyong or whatever. So I guess my question is, does she appreciate Hawke in the end for not agreeing with her?

Also really good news hearing her mourning quest and Act III bug will get fixed.

Patch? Thank goodness. Now I just need to decide whether to finish Act III anyway and take advantage of the patch during a replay (presumably it's fixing many things, after all) or to just wait for the patch. Hm.
