Maybe it is a bug but - Merrill is a bit... crazy right?

Merrill "Oh, I would love to see the Fade, you will bring me wont you?"
Hawke "Alright, you can come"
Merrill "Happy happy joy joy"

Merrill rivalry +15.

Hawke "Can someone go to the deep roads and pick up my jaw"

Let me guess, you also had Anders with you?

Yeah, I didn't like that in my Blood Mage pt. I tell myself Hawke uses mind-control/memory erase or something like that after figths. I mean, it's magic, everything's possible :P

No, it's either deliberate or a bug. I tried a few party compositions, the constant being Merrill and I always got rivalry points.

well i had Merrill all the time with me and i've managed not to get rivalry points so i'd bet it's a bug

Not necessarily though, because before Marethari appears Merrill seems upset that Feynriel gets this sort of treatment when she didn't. I think it's like Anders and the Fade, only a different story angle.

Looking up how exactly blood magic works, it seems entirely possible for Merrill to continue practicing blood magic at no (demonic, anyway) risk. The demon only comes into the picture to teach blood magic, and the demon who taught Merrill is dead/destroyed/whatever. Now that it's out of the way, Merrill is in no more danger than any other mage, and now has the blood magic powers to fight off any of those demons. It could work.

Right, Marethari does mention that she has paid her price basically. To assure that Merrill stays safe.

And Merrill repays her sacrifice by continuing the work that caused that sacrificed in the friend path. Which is another thing I don't like.

And with the mirror that leads into beyond the fade, she'd be at risk of being possessed again by another demon.

Just wanted to put it out there that Merrill has my favorite party banter by far... this line with Aveline specifically. Heavily paraphrased (and shorter than in-game) because I can't remember the whole thing.

Aveline: Merrill, that mirror of yours... is it dangerous?
Merrill: Well, it's really quite heavy...
Aveline: I mean, could it hurt someone?
Merrill: I suppose if it fell on them...
Aveline: Merrill! Is the mirror a threat to the people of Kirkwall or not?!
Merrill: Only if they were sitting right beneath it!

It's a longer exchange than that, I just can't remember it all.

This friendmance vs. rivalmance discussion has me unsure how I want to play it. My Hawke doesn't have a problem with her being a blood mage, and he doesn't mind the mirror from a purely theoretical standpoint. His problem lies with her perceived obsession over it. I imagine a drunken rant to Isabela and Varric in the Hanged Man about how he's losing her to a mirror.

I just uploaded a vid of Merrill and Varric banter about hahren Paivel. I think her impersonating Varric is so funny xD

I'm currently trying to romance Merrill with my male Hawke mage and would like to know when her romance scene is supposed to trigger?

I flirted with her once before going to the Deep Roads (the only time I had the option to do so), and I maxed out her friendship in act 2 and gave her the gift from the Dalish camp. Yet, the romance scene won't trigger nor do I get any new flirt options.
Do I need to reach some spcific point in the story for that to happen?

Thank you to anyone who can help me out.

It'll happen after her quest, and if you're 50% friend or rival.

This is really the point of the rival/friend romance. It's there to make it harder to choose as both have their perceived benefits.

One thing that really bothered me about some if the party as a Blood Mage Hawke is how their ragging on her about it but no body ever mention that Hawkes a blood Mage or you can't tell them to knock it off.

I'm playing through as a blood mage right now, and this is a little odd. I just posessed somebody and stabbed myself with a staff, and they're over there whining that there might be blood mages in the city somewhere.

You mean sort of like how I cast "blood magic" and "grave robber" right in front of the gargantuan Andraste statue and the grand cleric? Yeah, funny, that.

I deal with demons and use blood magic, but all they care about is that I'm not in the Circle. Okay. . .

Ya'll are a bunch of heretics.

And can you really possess someone if you take the blood magic specialization in the game?

With the Arrival DLC coming out soon for Mass Effect 2 it might be a good excuse for me to do another run through of that while I wait for a patch in DA2 to fix some of the bugs. Including Merrill's chronological bug.

What happens in the Mourning quest for Merrill?

I always get it listed as completed when I come out of the deep roads.

Well she basically consoles you on the death of your sibling.

I never got that bug though. If your sibling just leaves you or becomes a warden it functions as normal.

Well my first playthrough she asked Hawke how Bethany was doing in the circle (left her home, obviously) and said that there was nothing I could've done to prevent her being taken by the templars etc. Second time around Bethany became a warden and the quest was listed completed for me as well, so maybe it has something to do with that?

And if the sib doesn't die, she'll council you about what happened to them.

Example, she told me my brother loves me, even though he doesn't show it.

Heretics? Andraste is the heretic!

You can't possess people, but you can use the talent that allows you (provided they don't make a fortitude save, I think) to take control of them for 10s. Effectively it turns them into a temporary ally. After the 10s, they die, unless they're a higher ranked enemy: then they attack you again.

It's essentially what hacking synthetic enemies was in Mass Effect 2.

One day the shadows will part and the skies will open wide. When the Maker rises everyone will see.
That really made me laugh when Sandal said that.

Now Im tempted to try out the blood magic specialization in my mage run...
No, I must resist the corruption.

Shame about this bug really. Before I get too in depth with my current play through I may go and give Mass Effect 2 another run through in preparation for that new DLC that'll be out soon.

Hopefully by then the patch will have been released.

Here's another thought: as DA2 ends with Hawke and company essentially running to the hills and fleeing Kirkwall if the mages are sided with. I would assume in this case that Merrill would then have to abandon the mirror while fleeing, as the thing is not exactly conducive to easy transportation. Perhaps with the mirror gone, Merrill's main incentive to continue blood magic will be absent as well.
Just an idea I had.
