I'm pretty sure the rivalry is from telling Marethari that you'll make the boy tranquil.

It has something to do with Anders and Merrill in the fade. It's a bug I believe.

No, she keeps it if you're on her friendship path. It's just confusing at the moment because of the bug. (Which I've been promised should be fixed in the patch.) If you're a rival, she smashes the mirror. If you're a friend, she keeps working on the mirror and remains a blood mage.

Im actualy quite often confused by the rival/friendship points we get, especialy often by the amount of points for a certain action in comparison to another. Guess its kinda hard to tell if it really is a bug or we have not quite understand a certain part of that character which results in those points.

Anyway, I still have to send out my scouting party to search for that info about an update fixing these Merrill quest bugs.
Is there any real confirmation about it?

Edit: It's also not possible to keep Anders around, and at the same time, side with Templars. That's a given though.

I just wanna say that, no matter what, if you have a full friendship or full rival, and have done all personal quests, and have given all gifts, that regardless of the side you choose at the end of the game, all characters will stay with you. The only exception to this is Sebastion. He leaves no matter what you've done if you don't kill Anders. I saw some posts of people talking about it a few pages pack. Just thought I'd let them know.
So... Hawke is actually Shepard?

Shhhh. You're not suppose to find that out until they merge the series together after Dragon Age 3 and Mass Effect 3.
Edit: Typos.
Edit: Also, the whole getting rivalry with Merrill when going into the Fade for the Night Terror's quest is definitely from agreeing to kill the boy if need be. If you say you can't do that because that's his biggest frear or what not, you'll, instead, gain points with Merrill. I tested it many times when I did it on my first playthrough because I wanna say I'd kill him because I was as evil as possible, but didn't want her to disaprove because I was romancing her.

I just had the mirror conversation with her that went something like this:
Hawke: Of all the large mirrors in your house, this is the prettiest.
Merrill: Oh, thank you! I knew you'd understand.

She didn't really hint so much as tell us outright that she was assured that a fix for Merrill's bugs will most likely be released in the next patch.
So I think our chances are high for it being fixed in the next patch, especially since it's not a little thing, it's an outright fumble really that needs to get fixed.

Recently started Act 3 and I got the bug where she's crying by the mirror before the quest that's meant to lead to that scene. I then immediately spoke to her again to do her Act 3 "catch up" conversation scene which is one of the triggers for her Act 3 companion quest. I read about the bug on the internet and apparently it doesn't break anything, it just spoils what happens in the later quest. Well I then went on to do On The Loose, the 2nd trigger for her Act 3 companion quest, but only her quest didn't pop up. I went to her house anyway, just in case it would still work, but it doesn't.
Anyone else have this happen to them? Is the official guide just wrong about what leads to her companion quest?
While I'm not completely understaind what you're asking, I would like to say this: The guide is wrong in nearly every aspect. There are very few things that are correct in it. So if you're going by the guide, it might just be wrong.
But if I'm understanding what you're saying, then I'm pretty sure you have to get further into the main plot before her quest will pop up. In both Act 2 and 3 you have to be about half way done with the main plot quests for her companion quests to unlock.
Edit: I have the guide. That's how I know it's wrong in almost every way. Haha.

A bug makes Merrill's companion quest wrap up play at the beginning of Act III. We're nearly assured that a fix is on the way.

Really, the Piggyback one? It has often phrased things in a slightly confusing way, mainly due to how the walkthrough section and more detailed quest section are both written in a bullet-pointed, summary kind of way, but I've never actually encountered it being just plain wrong so far (well, I admit, if some stats for items are off, I wouldn't have noticed).Zeenof wrote...

Well I knew it was a known bug but when I googled it, people seemed to be saying that you can still do her Act 3 companion quest and progress normally, it's just that you see the mourning scene before Merrill actually has anything to mourn. I think the Wiki also says a similar thing. But for me it seems to have just totally killed all Merrill quest progress and therefore made her romance impossible to complete. It's annoying, I don't actually want to carry on playing if this is the case but I don't really want to just stop playing DA2 until they eventually release the patch either...MasterSamson88 wrote...

Edit
Reading more online, it sounds as if some people are lucky and the quest line still continues after the scene occurs out of order, but others find that it breaks the quest line right there. God damn it, and I've a good amount of side quests and a main quest since it went wrong.
