You know that heart-squeezy feeling you get when you see a basket of kittens or something? Yeah, that's exactly what I felt when I saw this little elf. She is unbelievably precious. Seriously, I have never seen anything so damn adorable in my life.
Yes! This! You guys have no idea how cute Merrill is. I work here and and I still squee when she says things I haven't heard.
There's a lot of this in the writer pit:
Merrill (in-game): (something unbelievably cute)
Sheryl: GIGGLESQUEE!!!!! SO CUTE!!!
Mary: Hee hee.
Sheryl: She's so adorable I love her and want to hug her omgIcan'tbelievehowadorablesheisCAN-I-NOM-HER-HEAD?!
Mary: ... No.
This isn't meant to be a slight or anything, but how does one who acts like this on the internet get taken seriously as a writer? I have not heard so many instances of "squee" and "nom" from women on the 'net since I was early teens. When someone basically says that they behave in a manner similar to a teenager in real life, my faith in their ability to actually write a good story or character diminishes greatly. I really wish the writing team would exhibit Obsidian's level of professionalism in this case, as it reflects better on a title that I -want- to like as I have enjoyed the developers' past work.
I really hope this is not indicative of a shift in the quality of BioWare's future games.
I completely disagree with you in every possible level. Good writers need good imaginations, and who have better imagination than kids? So a slightly childish writer is not exactly a bad thing.
Remember, a childish person does not mean an imature person, sometimes people just like coloring the world more to their tastes, even if they aknowledge the reality is not as pretty.
I cannot tell if this is a counter-troll or something, but children also think words such as "poop" and "fart" are on the same level of comedy as George Carlin or [insert your favorite comedian here]. There is certainly a time for childishness and playfulness. It is not in front of the people that you are supposed to be convincing to buy your product, and such openness when it comes to puerile behavior suggests either A) an unhealthy relationship with the consumer or
that you are, in actuality, someone who still finds that terminology to be sooo kawaii~ and endearing. I am not damning their ability so much as I am saying that it casts the writer in the same light as teenage girls who still write anime fanfic. I can get loud and silly, but not in front of customers or complete strangers. Showing that you are not a robot/a normal human being is great, but acting like you are far younger than your age is somewhat disturbing when you are describing a product you are currently making. Get what I am saying?
Also, Ramon, you like me less and less? Are we acquainted or something? I prefer people who act professionally in the public forum just as I prefer to dress my best when going to a formal event. It is supposed to be a courtship of the public, not a slumber party. I hold myself up to the same standards that I hold anyone else, and am not targeting them "unfairly." I am just stating a concern, and if they are truly secure with how they act then it will probably go right past their head anyways. They have probably heard far worse criticism in their time.
I understand your thinking, and I even agree that you haven't been overly rude about it as some people said, but I still completely disagree with you.
Your belief that the way someone acts on a forum, or anywhere else by the way, has something to do with their capacity to perform their jobs makes no sense to me, I've always been of the mind that as long as the job is done, it doesn't matter how it was done.
Let's say I have two salesman as my employees:
One of them plays video-games at work, joke all the time, and only work 4 hours a day.
The other is always serious, and works 10 hours a day.
If the first one sells more than the second, I would keep the first one, no doubt about that.
What I said about liking you less and less... well, it's just that your way of thinking reminded me of the many people with no talent that tends to overvalue professionalism that I know, I'm not saying you are like that and I'm sorry if I gave you that impression.
Well, hope that is at least a bit clear.
