No she doesn't.

Just don't give her the knife, or whatever she wants. You don't have to be mean. You can spend the whole game as a friend, and still get the rival version by just not giving her what she wants. You have a good reason, and you're doing it because you care and think she's in danger. Hawke will even say this.

I got the friend version and I didn't give her the knife. She was upset with me, but when she turned up at the house she didn't act like anything was wrong. Then in act 3 she even said "I thought I could fix it with the knife but I it wasn't enough" or something close to that.

So if I get her at 100% Friendship I can still get her to destroy the Eluvian if I deny her the tool to fix it and generally don't encourage her to be a martyr for the Dalish?

That's what that nasty bug will do alright.
Still can't believe how this all got past Q&A before they went gold.

Yeah, something like that. Well, not sure about the 100% friend thing. That might bug things, since once you get 100%, you're locked, and thus might not get rival results.

I was wondering, is there supposed to be any other... functionality to having Merrill live in my house other than her standing there and saying "I 'm beginning to think Sandal is watching me" when I click her?

She tells you that the Dog should have his own room, and not sleep in their bed.

Sarcastic Hawke is awesome with that.

"Is it because he watches us when we... you know...?"

Just tried doing the Mirror Image without giving her the tool and apart from her initial reaction everything was the same as friendship romance and as if I have given her that tool which creates inconsistency so even if A New Path aftermath will be the one where she destroys the Eluvian the game will assume that because you are on the friendship romance you have chosen to support her in her quest to restore the Eluvian. But I don't have time to go through the whole ACT II again just to see the effects and it is bugged as hell anyway so conflicts might occur.

If you have her friendship maxed before you do her first quest, then it wont matter. Its locked in friendship, so if you want to go rivalry, then make sure you are not 100% friendship before you do the quest, and keep the carving tool.

I finished Merrills rival romance last night, it was very good. I still prefer Isabela but I was very pleased with Merrills romance. Better then I thought it would be.

What did you think it would be and why was the reality better?

I wish there was a way to somehow get her to destroy the Eluvian on the friendship path... Oh well at least it does seem like she has abandoned trying to fix it and will not deal with demons again on the friendship path.

Is she an ass when you are on the rivalry path? I mean like Fenris ... screwed me over a few times for helping apostates and mocked me for giving him gifts. Does that kind of thing happen? Or is she still the same as she is? Apart from arguments over Eluvian and making shady deals with demons.

When you refuse to give her the blade she is pissed off, she will even kick you out of her house. After that happens she will talk to you at your mansion and you get a touching make up sceen. It's nothing like Fenris.

All a rival path is, is Hawke taking an active role in protecting Merrill and trying to stop her from this dangerous path.

No, she gets pissed but apologizes afterwards. For the rest of the game, she just accepts that your trying to protect her, but she still wants to fix the mirror. After you do A New Path, she destroys it and admits you were right.

The thing with the rival path is that she still tries to complete the restoration of the mirror regardless of lacking Hawke's support. Oddly (and awesomely) enough, they are still able to make their relationship work in spite of not seeing eye to eye on this major issue. As House said, she's angry at first, but comes to understand your reasons later (i.e., you are looking out for her safety).

What I like most about this path is that Merrill knows she's putting herself in danger but continues on for unselfish reasons...she's only concerned about what this artifact could mean for the Dalish and with Hawke's safety, which is why she tries to push Hawke away at first in the mansion scene.

Plus her calling Hawke a shem was awesome.Marry did a fantastic job really making the conversations after you refuse to give her the blade well done and emotional.

I agree...she was pissed (understandably so), but it wasn't over the top. She didn't try to kick you or anything. The 'Shemlen' comment burned...ouch!

This has probably already been brought up but in reference to DA2; Jerry Holkins, of Penny Arcade fame made the statement: "Voice casting works, and all voice actors would (in a perfect world) be Welsh." Make from that statement what you will.

Well then when they finally release a patch the fixes the quest bugs with Merrill I will do another playthrough with a rival romance :) If it's nothing like Fenris's rivalry (I hate you but respect/love you) than it should be fine I think. I will be able to get 50 rivalry points from the forbidden knowledge but I will have to restrain myself from putting her in my party too often before I reach 100 rivalry with her.

Also a question out of curiosity. Does the ''I love Hawke'' party banter between her and Aveline happen on both path's or just friendship? It was one of the most heart warming moments in the whole game especially when it happens right after A New Path which was depressing all the way through. Her asking Hawke to kill her if something goes wrong and than seeing how much the Keeper loved her. To a point when she has put Merrill above the clan and sacrificed herself just to keep her safe.

I wonder what is Mary Kirby's favourite relationship path with Merrill :)

Jumping in here to add that the shemlen comment actually made me flinch. Her entire rant felt like a slap in the face. She didn't really raise her voice that much, but man could you ever feel the betrayal.

Question. She only calls Hawke a shem if they were in friendship beforehand, yes? I was looking at videos for the rivalry path and the ones I found lacked that comment. Does anyone have a recording? I saved over that scene and can't go back to rewatch it.

I as well would like to know. Or at least what she thinks the pros and cons of both paths are.

Oooh, that was a cute moment!  Seriously, everything Merrill does either makes me giggle/squee or laugh.  On my third playthrough, and I still can't keep away from her.

Oh, the rivalry path is my favorite, hands down. As soon as I started planning Merrill, I knew that I wanted to have that moment where she accuses you of sabotaging her life, and her subsequent apology at your house.

Honestly, Merrills romance sucked me into the amazingly well written story. Though bugged to hell, it ripped me up inside when we found Marethari in Sundermount. [other elves were sad, but meh. they were mostly jerks] I want to have another playthrough to see the rival romance so baaaaad...

Dang, RL commitments. :P

PS: Merrill 4eva <3
