And since "A New Path" can have several outcomes, it's extra frustrating to see a specific outcome play before you've even decided how to approach the quest.Somebody wrote...

She is very noble in that she only uses blood magic to help her people and doesn’t abuse the power unlike so many others. Nevertheless you know from the beginning that her consorting with demons will probably end badly for her…because it does for everyone no matter how pure their intentions are ala Anders. Even she knows it but she is still willing to take that risk if that means she can save her people, which is very selfless of her. With that said the rivalry path and friendship path are wonderfully done. I prefer the rivalry path because it seems more realistic and adds a little drama to Hawk and Merrill’s relationship. I have nothing against blood magic as long it’s used in a virtuous way, in which Merrill does. My problem lies with the Eluvian and her dangerous obsession with it. The mirror is tainted and evil. Everyone sees it but her. If you have to continually make deals with demons to repair it, ultimately it is not worth it, as they will betray you. It is not a matter if it is a matter of when. This fact is proven at the end of her quest. It takes Hawk to make to make her see the error of her ways and leads to her decision to destroy that hunk of glass.
As for as Hawks romance choices go she is the best by far in my opinion. Hawk is pretty much all she has which is so sad, but that makes them perfect for each other because Hawk is essentially alone in the world too after all the horrible things that happens to him/her. The rivalry romance with her almost made me shed a man tear. It is so well done and endearing in that Hawk is trying to save her from her obsession with the mirror, event though she doesn‘t think she can be saved.
Sorry to ramble but I had to express love for one of my favorite video game characters ever. While most games try to make their cute characters not annoying they fail. While Merrill is a great balance of cute, funny, and badass while not going into annoying territory. Mary Kirby did a perfect job with Merrill, and it will be tough for Bioware to make a character more appealing than her…well Varric is pretty cool too.

Not to mention by the time of the endgame Merrill was by far the strongest overall character in my party, if she had healing capability almost no one else would even have been necessary. So yes, I consider myself a Merrill fan.

@RVonE: I think whenever someone is bugged by her behavioural quirks, it's mostly from not getting something or being intolerant of it (ex: Cultural ignorance is written all over Merrill) <--- however I find this to be cute at times and funny at others.
