Anybody else get pissed off with Anders always having a go at Merrill over the Blood Magic despite the fact that he is basically possessed by a demon and could be a Blood Mage in Awakenings?

I mean seriously, she was occasionally weak willed (take her to the fade in "Nightmares"), and it turns out that she is in over her head a little bit, but he hardly seems the right person to preach at her, Fenris is a bit of a bastard towards her, but at least he can take the moral high ground.

Occasionally yes, and I think sometimes they made her a little too much, but at
other times she shows herself to be very clever and insightful.

She also has the cutest dialogue in a game, ever. Hell, she even beats the turrets in Portal.

@RVonE: I think whenever someone is bugged by her behavioural quirks, it's mostly from not getting something or being intolerant of it (ex: Cultural ignorance is written all over Merrill) <--- however I find this to be cute at times and funny at others.

Agreed.

I'ld have to say at first I didn't like her at all, given her stupity so to speak with demon dealings and the like, at the time I didn't know you could carry romance and rivalry, so I started over and I must say, I loved the rival romance and the changes we see with her. Learning from her mistakes, having someone to count on, even numerous companions minus those who want to be in your pants *>> ANDERS* seems to think its a good thing for her. I also enjoyed watching her smash that mirror. Its a shame with her Keeper though but at least I kept her clan from attacking.

What I found touching was the voice actors ability to place emotion into her voice more so at the end it sounded as if real fear was there "Hawke if you weren't here I know they would kill me." Its a over all I feel the best relationship, though I may as a female mage try with Fenris see how that works.

As to her dafness it doesn't bother me, my wife is not from here and wasn't a sociable sort to start with, and its been a cultural shock for her adjusting here. So I deal with it irl (well not to the same extent as hawke thank god) so I deal with it in DA:2. And I find it rather amussing. In the end Merrill was troubled and misguided, but not at all a bad person.

Aveline: "I need X, Y and Z for a dowry."
Merrill: "That's silly! A dowry only matters if you're courting him..."
Aveline: "Merrill..."
Merrill: "*Gasps* You're courting him! *giggles*."

Really? Don't get me wrong, it's cute as hell, but she is still a little daft.

And in the next act:
Hawke: "So you never told us about your three weeks in Orlais?"
Aveline: "No i didn't"
Merrill: "So... How was it?"
...
Merrill: "Oh! *giggles*"

I wouldn't call her daft, just inexperienced with the subtleties of common social interaction.

Common human social interaction--or rather, common human social interaction of a certain culture and stratum.

I thought the caps lock would have given away the irony :?

My point is that archetypes are everywhere. They're impossible to avoid.

To put it another way, tropes are not bad.

Does anyone else think Merrill has a chance to be in DA3? If you think about it she really does, because she really wasn't a central character involved in DA2's main plot and her story really has potential to grow. I see 2 options for her assuming Hawk isn't the main character in DA3. If Hawk is the main character in the next game they should keep like half the characters including Merrill, Varric, and Carver/Bethany as their stories could continue quite easily.

1. She quit trying to learn about the Eluvian and gave up blood magic. She decided to rejoin a Dalish clan to try and make amends for her actions regarding her former clan. Decided to become a keeper. Main character learns of her clan around Orlais(which is probably where the next game will take place) and proceeds to gain her as a party member due to her connection with Hawk and possibly the warden as well.

2. She kept pursing the Eluvian and eventulally unlocked its secrets. She finally got to help her people as she desired and is the sole reason for the elves newfound prominence. DA3 main character learns she has founded a new clan with similar beliefs as her and is living near Orlais and knows she could be a vital ally in stopping the upcoming events. This path could make her incredibly important to the entire DA universe not just DA3.

Meh, i like Merril better as my personal little plaything, when she gives up on her stupid clan and devotes herself entirely to Hawke <3

Right, nothing is ever really truly original. Nothing wrong with that either. I could spend hours on TV Tropes.

Just curious, but do we ever find out which elven god Merrill's vallaslin represents? I know we never got a breakdown of which tattoos represented which Dalish gods back in DA:O, but now that we have a Dalish companion, it just made me curious.

Nothing better than someone who values nothing but you, right?

Hawke: Merrill, darling, make me a sammich.
Merrill: A sammich? Does that have bread? I like bread.

Definitely agree with this. She's Dalish and grew up in a nomadic lifestyle that, for the most part, tries to avoid human contact. I honestly would not have found her genuine if she completely understood human social interactions and the meaning/inflection behind human words.

I honestly thought the latter was especially well-done. Try throwing all of the purple icon/sarcastic Hawke comments at her when you first meet her. She just kind of smiles and nods and totally doesn't get the humor behind it. She understands what the words themselves mean, but doesn't pick up on the inflection of humor/sarcasm/irony, etc. Very much as if you'd say the same sarcastic line to anyone in the real world who understands English, but isn't their first language or a native speaker of it.

Combine that with the limited human interaction and she, herself, not being very sociable even with her own people, and that would naturally lead to a rather socially awkward person. Inexperience and naivete does not necessarily equal daft/unintelligent, after all.

How little Merrill understood humanity is what sold me on her almost instantly. When she asked if it was rude to ask a human his name, that's when I knew I was going to romance her.

I'm actually kind of surprised how different the dialogue is for male and female. Merrill loves them for different reasons. Which is a huge improvement over Liara and Leli. Points to Bioware for making them slightly different.

I never even knew that.

I always thought that both male and female Hawke would have the same dialogue.

The variation is a good thing.

Yeah. The rival versions are also different per gender.

Yeah, I really like how the game recognizes your gender more, and your class as well. A bit bummed that female Hawke doesn't seem to get as much dialog with her as male Hawke, who can go on to crack a joke about his ears not being pointy enough. At least, I don't think femhawke can do that.

Makes sense though, what with the controversial nature of a noble fathering a half-elf child.
