Probably not. However, I don't feel that way.
Fanfiction has lately left much to be desired for me. 90% of it tends to be poorly written and come across as... literary masturbaton? Perhaps that's too strong a term.
It's difficult for me to respond as I suspect my definition of literary masturbation isn't the same as yours. To me, literary masturbation is when a writer uses self-consciously elegant and stylistic prose in a way that obscures or supersedes content (or often lack of content).
It's something I see in people working for their MFAs while fanfiction tends to be plain* in style.
In regards to writing pornography, if you're not getting paid, you ought to be getting off.
Of course, there is the decent 10% that makes up for the rest, but I always wonder what the devs think when they see their characters being written by someone else and act in ways that may be OOC.
