....though I tend to believe Hawke had alot to do with it as well....probadly why I tended to rival Anders n friend Merrill( though that's because it's more benefical that way from a gameplay standpoint).

Hmmm...why do you think that?  I usually rival Merrill and friend Anders.

i also quite enjoyed her arc...the only thing about her arc, I don't like is how she is treated by some of the companions( particularily Anders....god, this is why I always have and always WILL kill him in act 3...other than the fact that when I don't play a mage(which I'm only doing once as a female), I get Bethany back). I also love the fact that Merrill if built right can be the second strongest character in the game besides Hawke...LOL.

Agreed. After all the hypocritical BS Anders constantly spouts (to everyone, but mostly Merrill) , after he's perfectly OK with selling Fenris back into slavery just cause he doesn't like him, and after the "chantry incident", I simply could not find it in me to leave him alive. I get the feeling that if the real (uncorrupted by Justice) Anders were still somehow there, that's what he would prefer, instead of being a vengeance-twisted husk of himself.

It's absolutely incredible though, how Merrill is about the only one wanting him alive after he constantly bullies her. I wish I could be that forgiving and merciful.

She is of a rare breed of person in this game....who thinks nothing of herself of her own feelings, but instead choose to worry more about her clan, friends, and lover( if she is in a romance with Hawke).

@ jib - Merrill's solidarity ability tend to affect her use of blood magic...it's like another of those blood magic type items or staffs...which each point of health would equal one mana...considering you could have five equips like that on her n her solidarity tree and she could be casting alll kinds of destructive spells at an almost 6 health to 1 mana use clip...with the her mana usage going to substains( since that works off of a percentage). Usually with that in consideration...friending Merrill for the most part meant rivaling Anders( and his whole anti-blood mage thing). There is no gameplay improvement to rivaling Anders though...unlike Isabella n Sebastion with their bug...

I don't stop by for the Sweet 16 and miss all the talk about adult fanfiction? Darn.

Anyway, I tried to rival-romance Merrill for my second playthrough, but ended up maxing her friendship bar when I accepted "Mirror Image". Got to stop bringing her when I support mages.

Hencing why I usually wind up only romancing her...which is exactly how I was in origins with Leliana.

I'm the same.  I have a knack for sticking with one romance.  Though, I must now figure out how my Blood Mage/anti-Chantry Warden will fit with DA2 Leliana....

LMAO! Yes, her chantry n maker preaching could be a pain sometimes...but to be honest she was no worse than Wynne( who annoyed the crap out me after my first 6 playthroughs...hencing why I always specced Morrigan as a spirit healer n took her with me for the most part ).

I think I prefer the rivalmance. It's emotional to be sure, but it's also a well written example of tough love, something rare in video games.

You get no complaints from me on that...considering I don't play on nightmare...gameplay standpoint is moot...but there is a case for the friendmance with Merrill....especially if your bloodmage yourself.

*thanks god he actually likes playing females in DA...*

Ohh =) I have never tried to rivalmance Merrill. Sounds like fun. Hmm... Don't even know how it is done since I often side with the mages. I guess that I'll just not let her go forward with her project and take it from there.

You can't bring Sebastian into the fade. He "religions" his way out.

I always take Merrill to the Fade.  I like it...character development and such.

Isabella : I like big boats and I can not lie!

ROTFLMAO! This line alone gets her a spot in the party for that every single time I play.

Unless you are purposely trying to rival or rivalmance in merrill's n possibly fenris's case... you could make a case to try n solo the fade...

In that case, the people going with you this time fit since you gain more friendship pts in the follow up convo than you gain rival pts from them in the fade...it actually works well for the story( unlike origins' version of the fade) as it seems to solidify your standing with your companions more...even in Merrill's case...if you because you can flirt with her more afterwords...;)

You can take Anders with you... He won't turn on you. And if you have The Black Emporium DLC, you can also use your warhound.

That's true... you just gain a massive rilvary score with Anders if you make a deal with the demon...which I found hilarious as well as hypocritical considering he did the samething.

Thank god for the emporium...not only the mabari but also the maker's sigh potions( and ton of other useful items)...so you can respec...not only your character but in this case Merrill too...so we build correctly instead of those horrible stats she comes into the party with( I usually wait til I'm around level 7 to get her...so I can work on her Dalish Pariah spec as well).

How are Merrill's stats horrible?

I still don't understand why Pol ran from her. Is it just the blood magic? Does he think she's an abomination?

The way they have her set up when you first get her is off...or atleast not how she could be setup as a blood mage...which is most of the points she gets are put into magic n con instead of magic n willpower(which is normally where you would put points in for a mage).

I think he(Pol) ran from her because of the blood magic...though I suppose he could believe she is an abomination...everyone else in the clan did...or atleast that's how they acted in act 3( though we all know it was Marethari that became the abomination).
