I wondered the same thing. Maybe it was because Bethany didnt like blood magic.Maria Caliban wrote...
You know what's odd about Consoling Words?
I had Merrill and Bethany in my party throughout Act 1 and thought I'd heard most of their banters. But when I talk to Merrill, Hawke says that Merrill never liked Bethany. I had no clue there was animosity between them.

Well, it seems just about all of the companions, with the exceptions being Isabella n Varric( and possibly Carver) had a problem with Merrill being a blood mage...though I never really understood as it made a few of them seem like hypocrites( looking directly at Anders( and Vengenance/Justice), Fenris( and his mage hate), Seb( and his chantry love) imparticular). The others I think just worried for their safety( Bethany- as a apostate which is odd since Merrill is the same) n for the safety of the city( Aveline).

It was one of several times when Merrill seems wise and far more on the ball than she usually seems. Quite a lot of her naive or gullible comments actually seem kind of sarcastic or spiky (like her description of The Chant as "a nice story but I think it's got some holes" where the "it's a nice story" sounds more insulting than the accusation of it having some holes) where on the other hand, the more obviously non-naive, non-gullible characters such as Fenris and Anders tend to be the ones who are actually missing the point more often.

The hypocrisy of certain characters was a nice touch. It made them feel much more real and complex rather than the more typical Bioware one-note characters who just sum up various ideologies. The whole Merrill and Anders thing was more about the ideas they'd been brought up with and how Anders was depending on the chantry's teachings that demons are evil while spirits are good to validate his decision.

I agree completely...fortunately for us the player...it tends to be our decision which matters the most in the scheme of things during the game( although that doesn't stop us players from wanting to smack some of the companions for saying or doing stupid n idiotic/mean things).

Well, actually neither was a port. That might be nit-picking, though. I'm not entirely sure.
This thread needs more Merrill.

I dome some Merrill. Sure she's kind of on a straight track to hell and all. But I always get her out of trouble so she can see the error of her ways.
Well, you know what they say about the road to Hell.
She's really not. She's just surrounded by ignorance. She also has the absolute worst luck of any character ever. Except maybe Heathcliffe.

It's actually her pride that gets her trapped. She believes she is strong enough no matter how many warnings she is given. The demon after her was a powerful pride demon who knew how to work her. He fed on her pride thinking she was strong enough to beat them. Fed on her pride that she was the only one who could help her people. Even if you are the LI for her. You can only refuse to do her quests, otherwise she'll keep driving to that point that she'll learn that it was her fault and what it all cost her.
Should I point out that the same type of demon convinces her to turn on you in the fade so she can help her people? I do

I dothe girl but her pride is a mountain in regards to how she sees herself compared to her own people and elves in general. Humans she's more in awe of, but elves and dalish? She probably thinks she's better than them at least on the inside.
I agree with this. This is why I prefer the rival path. I don't relate to the people who think she is an ideal flawless person. The fact that she is a girl with a good heart but genuine flaws is what I find so appealing about her as a character.

No matter the path it leads to being confronted by the Dalish. You are stuck at a point where you either let kill them all or take responsibility for everything she will do after it. Merrill lost so much that it finally opened her eyes and she destroys the mirror and stops her downward path. It cost her everything, the price was those around her and not her own. Especially when she realizes she would have been dead if Hawke wasn't there to talk them down. Scared straight that girl.
Merrill could have listend to Flemeth's warning but then the character's story would have been far more boring.

I understand that. I'm just saying on the rival path I feel less like I'm helping her commit suicide.

Nevertheless, if anybody could do it, Merrill can.
Why?
Remember, making a deal (like she did in the Fade) is not the same thing as becoming an abomination (as Marethari did).
It absolutely can be. And I don't think it's clear that she wasn't deceived or overpowered in the Fade.

She'll tell you afterwards that the demon was definitely doing something to her. I forget her exact words but it was manipulating her mind somehow, to make itself seem more trustworthy or something.
