What's this?

Ah, it's apart of Ander's romance. Strange how people are just randomly running into your house.

Merrill randomly wanders everywhere.
Isabela doesn't so much randomly wander as break in and rifle through your stuff.

Does Merrill have any romance dialogues like this? I invited her to my home, but I don't recall ever having a conversation with here there.

The most annoying thing is that for every, single battle, Merrill constantly goes "Do you think they're wearing down? Because I am." There ought to be a way to suppress the low mana comments on a BM.

Yes, and have something else for when she's getting low HP. "Ooh, my vision's getting spotty... Anyone have a bandage?"

There's also this apparent Blood Mage Exploit that's mentioned on the Wiki.

I don't know if it is known already, but... I know another exploit, if you're interested. It doesn't work with passive skills and upgrades, though.

It's pretty simple to perform.

All you gotta do is when you level up, simply select an ability you DON'T have. It appears on your bar on the bottom of the screen. Then move the ability to some other place on the bar. Then deselect the ability. If done right, the ability should still be on the bar.
You can do this with any ability you have available.

But why do you have to move the ability? Simple. When you select a new one, the one that had been placed on the bar will be overwritten, unless it is moved to a different spot. Since the ability isn't really unlocked, the game will see the spot as an empty spot, and will then override the ability with the newly selected one.

Ah yes, I found this very annoying. She was saying it again and again and again. It got soooo annoying in the end that I turned the sound off until the end of the battle.
Or I would just stuff her mouth with lyrium pots.

Not that I'm aware of, but you can talk to her regarding sleeping arrangements. She'll ask if the dog can sleep in a different room, to which Hawke will reply, "Is it because he watches us, when we..?"

Not sure what to think of that, tbh. I hadn't really considered it before but I guess I always assumed you'd make the dog sit outside when you're in the mood for the horizontal tango.

In the Isabela thread, they're posting songs that remind them of Isabela.

I can't think of one for Merrill.

Now that I think about it, considering how Sandal watches Merrill quite often when she's just about the house, you'd think the door would be shut and the dog, of course, outside with the dwarves and your mother. Otherwise Sandal would be watching a lot more than usual, eh? And there's a lot of stone in the house, seems like it'd echo a lot on more... Vocal... Occasions.

I hope the dog just won't shut up when he's left outside.

Well, there's this,

And there's the ring, and the one about how your dog shouldn't sleep in the same bed.

I looked through my artist list and could only think of a couple.

Dethklok-Bloodrocuted (the name)

Wo Fat- Common Ground (It talks about a guy and a witch who are in love, and they live together)

Does the ring dialogue change if you give it to her after you romance her?

Well you know what these Fereldan's are like...

Yeah, I just tried to think of one and couldn't. To be fair, apart from really silly things, it's hard to think of a song about something in a particular just like that. I've not seen the posts about the songs that remind them of Isabela, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's just the name of the song or a prominent lyric rather than the actual music or deeper meaning of the song (kind of like someone using Norwegian Wood by The Beatles to adverstise luxury wooden furniture from Norway, even though it's about having an affair and then burning a girl's house down...)

Also, Isabela has the whole pirate cliché thing going on (as comically explored in a piece of banter between her and Merrill) so anything like that will fit - Turkish Song of the Damned by The Pogues springs to mind. I'd be tempted to go for more traditional Welsh music for Merrill, but Bioware seemed pretty confused about what they were doing with the accents - like Black Isle were when they hired a Scottish woman to play an Irish woman in Torment, Bioware seemed to think Merrill's accent is Irish since all the other Dalish but one have Irish accents. Merrill is also often reported to be an Irish name, although it's apparently actually English. If they're going to try and play with accents and name origins, her name should be in Cymraeg (i.e. the Welsh language).

Well, considering there's not a whole lot of in between as to Merrill being serious or anything but, finding a song for her might be... Tricky.

I've been racking (wracking?) my brain, and all I can come up with is a song about Elizabeth Bathory.

Yeah.

Not really. Aside from mass murder and torture and stuff, the stories are thematically similar. Elizabeth Bathory was totally a blood mage.

Merrill's personality screams of an unhealthy obsession with something, and the willingness to go to any lengths to achieve it.

For Elizabeth Bathory, it's using other people's blood to achieve eternal youth*.

For Merrill, it's using her own blood to fix the mirror.

*She was actually probably just a sadist, but the mythical woman of the stories was stricken with sinful vanity.

Using other people's blood to achieve eternal youth: To me, this says complete selfishness, apathy, vanity... Plus, fear of death.

Using her own blood to fix the mirror: Pretty selfless, working to better her culture, unless you look at it in a way that makes you think she's doing it all because she's prideful and  thinks she's better than other Dalish (I don't, some do, it's all opinion). Especially her refusal to use blood other than her own. Considering the amount of scarring poor Merrill must have, she's not vain on a purely physical level, for sure. And she's quite willing to die for her belief.

I'm happy hearing your thoughts in response and calling it settled, we'll just think about what each other has said and move along. I hate it when dozens of posts are committed to a rather pointless opinion war (which this isn't even close to yet, mind).

I agree with everything you've said. So there.

I just don't think that the discrepancy in motivation invalidates the comparison. They're still both stories of obsession, power, and the inevitable fall from grace.

But, better song for Merrill: Dead Boy's Poem, by Nightwish.

Sound reasoning. A fine argument, serrah Posted Image

Although I have to add, Merrill will never fall from grace for me. Merrill Appreciation Thread FTW!
