**Spoilers**

Something in the
magazine probably talked about her being cast out... my German and
Russian are both horrible but they seem to suggest that she's like a
pariah (outcast) from the clan now, the translation was a little messed
up and I couldn't really understand whether they were talking about her
or one of her spells....

This may be similar to Velanna's story
but she may be cast out for a different reason entirely, or maybe it's
another mistake in the article... I hope it's not true though.

**Spoilers**

**Spoilers (well not really, but speculation based on spoliers)**

Hmmm... that's interesting if true. Makes me wonder if the mirror from the Dalish origin story had more of an effect on her than we thought. Also, didn't the German article mention that she uses blood magic? That could also have something to do with her exile.

It also makes for quite the interesting contrast -- the 'virginal girl-next-door'/practicing bloodmage...

The comment in the trailer about the virginal girl next door makes me wonder about the audience that is targeted with this game.

A wast majority of mature man don't need that kind of confirmation of their manly manliness, unless it's a religious thing- than I'm leaving it aside.
Looks like they are trying to create the Tali thing with Her.

The game will probably be a huge success, but the main problem for people with imports that they created is that you are stuck with one of your siblings based on your DAO class.

Yes, Fenris does look "GOOD and proportional." .

Honestly I think that we need  good-full-body-standing-still sсreenshot to judge how Fenris  is actually  build. All that we saw was action, upper body shots(+one blurry screencap from making-of video) and concept art that is very different from in game model.

On the concept, yep, he is almost DAO elf, he even have stubble *shudder* and broad chest. But from in game shots I have an impression that he have  thin shoulders, long neck and  pretty much Merryll alike considering that he is a male.

My point is we need good, full-body screenshots of elves of  both genders to judge them. Preferably with a humans standing near so we could also judge they high. Lets hope that developers will me mersifull to our curiosity.:innocent:

As opposed to Dragon Age: Origin's 'target audiance' being those who'd get a kick out of the 'Sex and Violence' trailer or the Maxim pictorals of Morrigan and Lilianna?
I think it was an off-the-cuff remark and certainly not the focal point of the trailer. I'd also be very surprised if that's all there is to her character (see my previous post in that regard).

Or maybe elves don't forbid blood magic, think of it, she's the keeper's first, all her magic must be taught to her by the keeper and the dalish never leave their clans save for a selected few to barter with friendly human villagers, either Merrill found some old elven tome to study blood magic and kept it a secret or the keeper taught it to her.... really interesting if it's part of the plot.

For some reason, I thought the Tevinter learned blood magic, and all their magic, from the original elves.

So, I slightly manipulated this picture of Merrill to abide by what some people prefer--in terms of ear shape, eye size, and bust size. I don't prefer this version, and because of that I didn't manipulate her eyes and face too much, but I'm curious to see if some people do. I spent...like...seven minutes on it, so don't be critical (first is completely untouched, including sharpening, constrast, and coloration).

Honestly, I prefer the way BioWare did it. Then again, I liked the changes in the first place.

The size of the ears isn't the problem, it's the tips pointing back instead of up that makes them ugly.

Agreed, that is my only beef with her as we dissect every aspect of every character. :P

The ears kind of drooping looks odd at least in the still shot.

Me too. But, some people really hate how larger her eyes are. I suppose I could have plastic surgery-fied her face, but I didn't really want to.

At least part of their magic is claimed to come from the Old Gods:

" The Archon Thalsian, first of the Magisters, who claimed to have contacted the Old God Dumat, used the blood magic Dumat taught to him to attain incredible power in Tevinter and declare himself the ruler of an Empire. In return, he established the first temples worshipping the Old Gods, and the dragons became equated everywhere with imperial power."

whether any of that is true is anyone's guess, of course.

Yes, but they didn't know that contact with humans turned them mortal originally.

Why wouldn't an elf teach a human magic? Remember, this was before the fall of Arlathan, back when elves and humans lived together peacefully.

Their magic was their identity they wouldn't share it with a violent, dirty race as they said, Also the Elven god's would probably take a heart attack if they did.

Me too, and honestly  I do not understand the hatred for the ears...whats wrong with the angle of slope? For me its far mo natural for long ears to be slopped.
And big eyes is good elves now look like they descended from cats or some other small predator.

Honestly, it would seem "younger" than the first one.  Even the gameplay is more console than its predecessor.   In fact, I am willing to bet ( and am ready to be corrected, but still) that the game style they have decided to use for combat and it's special effects is specifically designed to improve their console market ( despite the fact I believe this game to be much better on the PC, and yes, I have BOTH versions so I feel I can comment without being simply assuming.)     The new style is very... "console-y" if that makes any sense.

Much more exaggerated female bits, flashy gore-splash and slash combat = young(er) market (to me).  PC gamers, historically anyway, have been older than console gamers ( though the gap is decreasing in the last 10 years I think with popularity of PS3 etc) so, all in all it makes sense.  But the thing I liked about DA:O is that it didn't have ONE obvious target market in its *appearance*.  Just about any person who liked RPGs could get into the story.   I can't say the game-play has been dumbed down, because I havent played it yet.  PERCEPTION based on what I have seen however leads me in that direction.   I would love to be proven wrong though.  (this could of course be based on *all* videos UP TO NOW using the male hawk and his hetero orientation.  Maybe a female Hawke ad will turn the tables a bit but it would not change the style of combat change to more console-like)

I'd expect humans to have studied some basic forms of magic independent of elves and before any contact with the elves happened -- it's likely there were mages born in human societies long before that after all, and it's hard to overlook and/or ignore people who spontaneously set things on fire and such.

Anyhow. Liara, Dawn Star, Aerie (screaming harpy woman if you ask me), Tali, and Leliana a bit, too. Alistair is a virginal guy next door.

This is no new archetype that they are using. In fact, the sultry, sexy, flirty girl and the virginal, sweet girl are very common to BioWare.

I really don't think that Dragon Age 2 really represents a shift in the market, so to say. However, I DO think that the success of Dragon Age: Origins and of Mass Effect 2 has allowed BioWare to build a larger fan base and there send this product out to a bigger general market, if you follow.

I'd still say the majority market for this game is males age 15-35, which is still the majority market for almost all video games anyway. Whether the game is being "consolized" - no, I don't think that either. I think the game is being made more compatible for consoles which is to play into the increasing number of BioWare console players due to Mass Effect. Origins on console was essentially a PC port to console and didn't have the smoothest controls.

As for the women, big spells, gorey explosions and stuff - maybe that's a bit of "youthing" the product, but with the ambitious story that they're trying to deliver and the character relations and whatnot that are staples of BioWare products, I don't really see that this game has gone from being "adult" to now being "teen."

Yet, you're buying their game.

What does that say about you, and about what they're doing?

ROTFLMAOOOOOOO...

I agree completely. And yes, these are VERY VERY common for BioWare... probadly why in some cases the exceptions being Liara and Tali... i went with the other girls though i admit I also chose Leliana most of the time as a male in origins. This game... I think I may be a bit more on the even side of things if this does turn out to be with Merrill. This is of course assuming they are the only (hetereo)male options available...
