No, I'm the same way in Origins. Leliana just jumps onto my heart and snipes everyone else before I can even see them.

I'm trying really hard to stay away from Merrill. It'll be easy when I'm playing a male character and I go after Fenris, but my current character already fell for Merrill's first flirt option :pinched:

Anders was Funny Anders in Awakening. I'm convinced that it was the only way he could deal with his sense of powerlessness.

Skanky Isabela is the Isabela who only gets to know you from the waist down. I'm not saying that her attitude toward sex is the result of a tortured past, because that would demeaning. I think she really does just really like sex. But her aversion to intimacy, her "look out for number one" attitude... these all seem like tools, not who she is at her core.

Merrill is sincerely adorable, but it's superficial. Her adorability is all contextual. In her clan, speaking elvish, she likely would not have been adorable. She wasn't adorable in Origins. Take Merrill outside of everything, so that you're left with just Merrill, and you have things like pride, obsession, neediness (not needing anything from anyone else, but needing to be something for herself). That's not acoustic guitar. That's piano, violins, and power chords.

I'm going to answer you backwards.

Merrill is adorable in terms of our culture. Girls who pick flowers, fall off the pier, notice the sparrows in the rafters, wander around and get lost in peoples cupboards, and miss the heavy sexual humor her friends use are adorable. Whether the Dalish would see these traits as adorable doesn't really matter as she's obviously meant to seem that way to us.

I understand that you need power cords to hear pride, obsession, and neediness, but acoustic guitars can do that fine for me.

Yeah, I disagree with that. I'm not sure how 'looking out for number one' or 'aversion to intimacy' equals 'skank.' And those things are important parts of who she is. They might not be all of her, but they're not simply a mask either.

I don't remember that.

Oh man... or girl... or Desire Demon... or whatever-you-are (I'll just stick with Desire Demon for now), you just summed up the one reason why I like Merrill so much.

The little elven temptress tested me sorely in my current play through, but I held true to Isabela.

I would romance her, just to see what it would be like.

But that yellowish thingythang under her lip just turns me off the moment I see it.

The Merrill cannot be resisted.

It occurred to me, when I randomnly thought about Merrill walking around barefoot, what shoes do you think Merrill would wear? While personally, my only requirements for shoes is that they be at least 15 inches long and keep my feet marginally dry, this made me wonder a bit. I vote sandles (great, now I'm thinking about "ENCHANTMENTS!").

Edit: Open toed, of course. Otherwise she wouldn't be able to stub her toes Posted Image

And now that you mentioned shoes, I'm suddenly thinking about Leliana.

She and her obsession for shoes...!

No wonder my Warden hasn't got a single Sovereign left in his purse...

It's funny though.

I despised Anders in Awakening, while I like Anders in DA2.

Anders just went from obnoxious to whiny for me. I really thought I was going to like him, but I just... blech. I'm rivalmancing him in my current playthrough, so maybe I'll warm up to him.

My next playthrough will be my mage, who's going to rivalmance Fenris. And then, I'll make a [insert class here] who'll likely be my "canon" character, and I'll finally get back the Merrill

It's not a bad thing...as I and quite a few others in this very thread are the same way.

Although, I will try n romance some of the other characters...once I get my ps3 back on Mon... it will be Merrill( male warrior)...Isabella(male rogue/female rogue...haven't decided the gender-since LadyHawke looks sooooo GOOD in rogue champion set:wub:)...Fenris(female mage- to me Lady hawke fits the mage best with her voice)...all playthroughs after that will be Merrill-mances. ;)

I don't even want to romance anybody else. Merrill and Leliana are great. Merrill works better with Malehawke, though, and Leliana works better with a Femwarden (Leliana is a lesbian, male Wardens shouldn't be able to romance her)

But oh, the humanity, if I would have to choose between Leliana and Merrill...!

My head would...

Merrill's making me forget how much I hate elves. I'm pining for Arlathan. This is not good.

I need to go back and play Origins some more and remember the glories of Tevinter.

This sounds quite right to me. But can you imagine the outcry if all the human male warriors couldn't romance Leliana? Posted Image

Wait, what?!

I would discuss it here, but this is a Merrill thread. Not a Leliana thread.

But imagine the outrage... It's better this way. And it should be.

I resent this. My Warden is a male, and he got with her. He needs love too!:crying:

And no, The Pearl is not an option.

Then slaughter the Dalish clan in Act 3 a few times more. That always reminds me how Merrill is not a typical Elf of this Age.

You wouldn't believe what Merrill does to us people who've always liked elves!

I'd read a novel about Hawke and Merrill post-Orsino & Meredith. And I'd put it on The Bookshelf.

She's a character. She's *designed.* Merrill was given a group of traits so she'd seem adorable. They didn't just magically appear.

When the codex tells us that she wanders around Kirkwall and somehow ended up in the Viscount's cupboard, I find it difficult to believe that her adorableness is simply a mask. When the short story has her pondering in her head a spooky award for mountains, I also find it hard to say that's a mask.

Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. The really famous section. That makes me think of Merrill too. "Behind Blue Eyes," by The Who is as close as it gets to Merrill for me as far as not-over-the-top-with-drama music goes.

Okay. And Wonderwall makes me think of Merrill. And it uses acoustic guitars.

Well, because Isabela's not a skank.

Yes, she is.

If we're going to treat skank as a worthwhile term (I'm not inclined to do so, but whatever) Isabela is totally a skank. She's skanktastic. Her skankatude is a healthy 7.6 on the skank-o-meter.

Again, who she is vs. how we percieve her. She cultivates the perception, but she doesn't change.

A character does not exist outside of our perception of them.

For the record: I don't think Funny Anders is funny. I call him Funny Anders because he's intended as comic relief. I'm not sure if you just disagree that he was funny or if you don't remember that he was clearly intended to be funny.

I never finished Awakening. All I remember of Anders is his conversation about how robes are useful and that he had a kitty.
