Phylacteries, which the templars use to hunt down mages that escape from the Circle, are blood magic.

Such as?

Merrill: Ser Pounce-a-lot... who knighted him?
Anders: Is that a serious question?
Merrill: Did he have a little sword, or just his claws? I bet he had a dashing cap with a feather in it!
Anders: Would you stop making fun of my cat?
Merrill: Oh... no hat, then?

On another note, I want this fanfic to be updated soon. The writer said he would update it "tomorrow" a week ago. I know how things can be, though, I'm not criticizing him/her.

The lore is inconsistent. You're supposed to have to learn it from somebody, but now we have mages just discovering it. Chalk it up to the thin veil and demons whispering to them (after all, they do turn into abominations fairly quickly).

So in general, yes, you need to learn it.

edit: That fanfic is . . . not so good. I'd write a Merrill one (and want to) but elves, GRRR. Need to return to my roots.

Oh that. Well all they use it for is to search for mages, but I see what you mean.

I was confused by that. Anders says to use it you must make a deal with a demon, but I thought blood magic was basically just using the power of blood to "fuel" your magic, rather then lyrium.

One of two things is going on there: either Merrill is making fun of Anders's cat, or she doesn't understand. In the case of the former, I think you've selected the only example of Merrill being funny on purpose :P In the case of the latter, it goes back to her situation, which was my original point.

Having Gascond use blood magic to help find your mother is the exact same thing.

I think its a little different. He was able to find that woman really quick. With Phylacteries, you have to be in the general area or something.

I don't think so. Just because she's a Dalish Elf cut off from the world doesn't mean she'll actually think that kitties are knighted and go into battle with feather caps on. She's just unrealistically silly, which is fine with me.

I don't think she actually thinks that either :P I just think that the humor and cuteness of Anders and his cat isn't something she immediately grasps.

I'd say that the lore is inconsistent in many areas, the most glaring example being the whole teleportation issue. The codex mentions that it's impossible to teleport even small distances, but you have weak mages in DA2 doing just that. Gascard even teleports your entire party and himself a distance that is probably miles.

How about her baby griffon pet? I liked the way she says "I'd name mine, Feathers".

I don't think so, but doesn't Merrill say "The spirit helped" when she used her bloodmagic? That's what I'm confused about.

Also, I'm still kind of confused with how demon possession works in DA. It seems they want a host, yet some can be in physical world without one. So why do they need a host? And some think that a demon can be battled and killed in the real world to avoid possession. Example, some believe that if the Pride demon came through the mirror, Merrill could just fire ball it dead, and that's it. Or if they summoned the demon during Act 3, if it didn't play nice, Hawke and Merrill could just kill it without getting possessed. But I'm not sure if it works like that. I think some can't be killed unless they possess something first. Until then, they're just a spirit that can't be touched.

So I wondering, how does someone avoid getting possessed? How exactly can it actually happen? And how does being a Bloodmage put you more at risk? How is being a mage putting you at risk, etc.

Well, like I said, it can be resolved in a way so as to be consistent (the thinness of the Fade at Kirkwall). :P

TMA: The easiest way for a demon to get out of the Fade is by possessing somebody, usually through dreams but sometimes just when mages are in the Fade. However, if the Veil is thin--or if they're summoned--there's no need to possess somebody, they're already in the real world.

However, they might still possess things because demons apparently hunger for senses and feelings and things.

You have to admit, it's a pretty good name. I think she was being completely honest, and considering Bethany and her question, that fits well with me.

She's culturally unaware, but she's not stupid. I think she gets what Anders is doing--and the whole Griffon name confirms it for me.

I mean, I named my mabari in DA:O "Ser Fluffington" when I did the human noble origin.

The demon would most likely tell Merrill allowing it to possess her is necessary part of fixing the mirror, and Merrill being Merrill would most likely agree to that. It's why she tells Hawke she needs him/her to be there to kill her "if things go wrong".

She seemed to trust it, but I dont think she would be that stupid. She thinks what Anders did with Justice was wrong, so I cant see her willingly allow a Pride demon to possess her. And she tells you to kill her if that happens in her quest.

Yeah, she's pretty clear that allowing yourself to be possessed is stupid. She wants Hawke in case she gets overpowered, but she's trained to avoid that sort of thing.

Deffinately can't see Merrill willingly being possessed. She states all spirits are dangerous, she obviously knows what they want above all is possession.

That's not letting HER be possessed. That's letting the demon have its way with Feynriel.
