I'm still not sure I believe the demon. It told Marethari that it would jump out and possess Merrill so that Marethari would free the demon. There's no reason to suggest that a demon--bound to the statue, not the mirror (which isn't even there)--could leap out. The mirror is from Ferelden, it has nothing to do with the demon in the statue.
It made me think that the demon probably just wanted to trade information for freedom from the statue; Being a demon (especially a pride demon), it would probably want freedom into the real world, rather than just the Fade.. This is why I think, with her friends to help, Merrill would have been completely safe from the imprisoned demon, and if she had let it out, she could kill it afterwards. I'm terribly fond of making a deal with a demon, then breaking your word. Seems so right, as they always, unanimously, betray those seeking an even bargain.
I'd stake quite a bit that Marethari could have released the demon from the statue into the real world, especially with the veil so thin. She just couldn't hope to kill it, and didn't want to risk her clan. She mentions Merrill is "So much stronger" than she thought she was. IMO, Marethari didn't trust Merrill's dealings with the demon, and so got the end result of a released and defeated demon, while not only risking setting it loose (if it was too strong for Merrill, it would probably slaughter her clan), but also completely taking the option of getting information from it away, and sacrificing herself in the process.
Anybody else just love backstabbing the greed demon in the Deep Roads?
