Don't help her with the Eluvian, tell her she's wrong about what she's doing (especially in dealing with demons), say that blood magic is dangerous... that should make it easy to get into rivalry territory.
Destroying the tomes in certain quest (which I don't think I got during my first run) also helps. Siding against mages in conversations should also net some rivalry.

Will the friendship increase if I give her gifts?

edit: And goodness, could Merrill look any more adorable in that shot?

I'll just tell you this. Its incredibly easy to turn a friendship into a rivalry with a single decision in the middle of the game. Its heart breaking watching her beat herself up - but it pays off in the end with you stick with the rivalmance. But just like with Isabela, or Fenris, I'd rather shield them from the harm coming their way then let my friends get hurt... even if they hate me for it immediately afterwards. In the long run if they're truly Hawke's friend they'll understand why what went down was done.shumworld wrote...

I have a strange desire to nom her face.
My biggest impediment to role-playing with Merrill is that Merrill will say something adorable or serious, and I just imagine Lady Hawke leaning over and...
*snipped adorable puppehs*
You still will get that quest. It'll work the same, except that the starting dialogue is different. She'll say that she needs to speak with the demon to find another way to fix the mirror.Jorrkit wrote...
If you don't give her the mirror-fixing tool in act 2, do you still get the quest with the pride demon in act 3? How does that work, exactly?
It didn't work so well for the elves.Emperor Iaius I wrote...
I'm suddenly thinking that the magisters would have stayed in power a lot longer if they would have just tried to be a little adorable.
Certainly that's a possibility. At the same time though, it can be safely said that demons don't really help people out of goodness of their heart and look after their own interests first and foremost. As such, it's rather given that there was something beneficial for the demon either in the act of fixing the mirror itself, or in whathever it was that the demon was planning to extort from Merrill in exchange for the help in fixing it.Emperor Iaius I wrote...
I'm still not sure I believe the demon. It told Marethari that it would jump out and possess Merrill so that Marethari would free the demon. There's no reason to suggest that a demon--bound to the statue, not the mirror (which isn't even there)--could leap out. The mirror is from Ferelden, it has nothing to do with the demon in the statue.
How many times that happens depends entirely on the Hawke you're playing. The argument pretty much falls apart if you don't.Maria Caliban wrote...
And how many times has Hawke said, "I'm going to do something stupid and horribly dangerous. Come along and help me?"

Not sure if everyone has seen my Merrill themed DA2 launcher, so here it is for those that have not!
It's available in my DA2 project.
well but you cannot say that friendly-love towards Merrill Hawke type doesn't care about her safety or happiness -more to that he loves her so much he doesn't want to hurt her feelings even a bitRykoth wrote...
IMO, a true friend/love of Merrill would rival her. Mostly because I see rivaling her more as trying to keep her safe. And being nice to her.
"Don't thank me" is what I would normally say as a friend to someone who I did a favor for. That nets rivalry with Merrill.
