Not to bash, but I have a bad feeling about Fenris coming in at 3rd, minimum. I mean, I suppose his story isn't bad, and all, but really, I don't think his popularity has anything to do with character...

I think I'll read a few lines of the Merrill FanFic, and if it's really good, I'll just print it off and read it tonight. Sounds like it will be.

Yeah, Anders and Fenris are way too popular. Fenris is a decent character, so I guess he deserves popularity, but Anders is objectively bad. The fanfic has a lot of typos and grammar errors, and it's not the best writing, but I think that the author does Merrill's POV well, and i like the interaction with Varric and Isabela. At any rate, it's the best fanfic of Merrill so far.

Then again, maybe it's best to deny fans their every tawdry desire. A character does not need to be a romantic interest to be wonderful - see: Varric and Aveline - and not every wonderful character needs to be a romantic interest.

Also, I wonder why Mary only writes the non-humans. Coincidence, or does she prefer them?

I thought she wrote Loghain?

Is their any love triangle conflict in this game like in DAO? I know in act 3 the romances are locked, but what If I flirt with 2 or 3 people and sleep with all of em?

Loghain was in the top 3 DAO Characters for me. Tactical genius who was just a bit paranoid. Good intentions, bad execution.

He was a good character, I'll give him that. But I hated him. (I did like him in The Stolen Throne though)

I hated Loghain but after reading The Stolen Throne and The Calling I started to like him. I always feel sorry for him when I execute him. If you harden Alistair how angry does he get if you spare Loghain and turn him into a Grey Warden?

Merrill is very cute.

He will still get really mad, and leaves the GWs.

No, not quite. Varric is on top, and from what I can tell from eyeballing the histograms, Merrill and Isabela are neck and neck with one another. I'd hazard to guess at the moment that she is ahead of Merrill slightly.

Loghain is an interesting character just has blinders clouded in paranoia. Though Cailan wasn't helping matters with basically courting empress and all. He just set himself on a path where he couldn't turn back. Plus it's not like his past experiences with Grey Wardens left him with a warm fuzzy feeling.

What, because he's a villain? 

No. I hated him. He was a militarist, nationalist, and proto-fascist who had no respect for the aristocracy, the rule of law, and tradition.

He was well-written, of course. He was once a great man, and you can see glimmers of it. You can also tell that he loves his country. Indeed, you can see his deep fear that he's about to lose Ferelden to the Orlesians once more. You can see his desperation and his breakdown into madness. Ms. Kirby knows her stuff.

There are characters I hate because they're just awful, and there are characters I love to hate because they're done so well and provoke a visceral response. Loghain is the latter.

Allistair gets whiny if hardened and you spare Loghain. He then takes the anger and demands the throne.
I understand that he left your half brother and pseudo father (Duncan) to die but that isn't the same as malicious murder. See it from his view: it was a losing battle, in fact suicide. The king didn't want to wait for Grey Warden reinforcements. Why should Loghain send his men to die? For patriotism / honor the King? It is a better service to your nation to retreat and live to protect another day. Allistair let his emotions control him, which is good for a King thinking of his people (and why I set him as King) but for Diplomatic and Strategic matters, it is bad (that is why I set him to marry Anora). This why Alistair is lame in my book, he had a kind heart but not an analytical brain deserving of his role. Guess it runs in the family.

The thing that I hate the most about Loghain is how he told Maric that Katriel was a spy but neglected to add that she had left her employer's service. I don't actually think that the writing was very good for that part. Maric seemed OOC when he killed Katriel.

I haven't read the novels. I can't say I have much interest in doing so, either. Books and I have an... interesting... relationship. Licenesed IP novels (even if they're written by Mr. Gaider) aren't my cup of tea*. Why does Merrill always have brown hair in fanart, when she clearly has black hair (or very, very, very dark brown) in-game?

No. Loghain forced the battle. He didn't want to wait for the Orlesian Wardens. It was his own fault the battle occured, and then he was like "wahhh, Cailan wanted glory!"

Hm. Ok. She's still hard to write, but I suppose it's worth the challenge. Actually, it's a bit easier now that I think about it . . . her ignorance of wider Thedas is an asset. All we, the players, know about places outside Ferelden and Kirkwall is what we've read on the codex or heard secondhand. Similarly, all Merrill would know is what she's read.

I can let my own ignorance about stuff we haven't seen be a virtue.

I imagine Merrill would have a lot of interest in human culture, art, etc. She has a ton of books and several paintings in her apartment. It'll be interesting to explore how she got those in the first place.

ishmael: yeah, but with a few exceptions, SW books haven't been good since, well . . . the last millennium.

I have way too much "serious literature" to read to spend time on tie-in works. It's funny, though, because I would love to waste my time on tie in works (as evidenced by the amount of time I waste here) but for some reason, I can't extend that justification to the books.  Heck, I haven't even finished the Elder Scrolls novel, and I'd waited years for one of those!

Do they exist in e-book format? If I'm already wasting time on the computer, it wouldn't bother me.

The banter where she asks Merrill why she's still here shows how they actually have some real common ground and an understanding of one another if you're romancing Merrill. I don't know how it plays out if you're not, but I doubt that Aveline's view will change that drastically just because you're not in a relationship with Merrill.

[EDIT] XX55XX, that pic illustrates my above comment perfectly! She has light brown hair there, but SHE ACTUALLY HAS DARK HAIR. It baffles me. I'M BAFFLED.

I didn't notice that. Aveline seems polite but distant at the beginning and polite but distant at the end.

edit: Yeah, I've seen that one. I have it on my favorites there because of the high quality, but I'm not sure it looks that much like her at all.

And the nose. Which disappoints me, because I actually love the new elf noses (at least as implemented with Merrill and Fenris*). I... haven't noticed that quality about the eyes? But I'm not one for detail. Well, I sometimes am. But sometimes not. It depends?




*some of the NPC elvs do look really unattractive, but for the most part, the redesign rocks, and our elven companions look brilliant

No, it doesn't really look like her at all. There is a vague resemblance, but this portrait of her gives her a small, round face, brown hair, and smaller eyes to boot.

But, it's still a damned fine portrait. Too bad a lot of the fanart of her is less than appealing to look at.
