I like Merrill for being Merrill; That entails some blood mage attributes, but only so much as a bleeding wrist whose blood is being consumed as soon as it's flowing out, for magical use. I'm not squeamish about blood; That picture, way back, of Merrill drinking blood off of her finger, kind of freaked me out, though. Vampire Merrill? Noty.

I feel exactly the same way. About Merrill and the particular fan art you're talking about. Fantastic painting skill, but it didn't feel like Merrill to me. I've drawn blood and violence many times - it doesn't bother me. But there's more to Merrill than her blood magic.

So do I.
There's more to her than blood magic. May it be her stuttering and stumbling, or getting lost in Kirkwall, she's one of the best companions in the game.

Yes. Inking, anyway. I draw in Photoshop, but depending on the style I want to have, I usually ink in Flash. Sometimes Illustrator. Rarely Photoshop. I can get smoother lines easier in Flash and Illustrator. My hand isn't particularly steady.

For example, this was inked in Illustrator. This in Flash. This in Photoshop. All of them were mostly or entirely colored in Photoshop, and all of them were first roughed out in Photoshop.

Believe me when I say Illustrator is the devil's program.

Especially the pen tool; I think it's possessed or something... Like, whenever you select it, the devil says "ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL" and messes up your entire drawing by just effing with the pen tool you're using...

Nice work Dalish. Me, I'll always be stuck with a pencil. The only things I will pridefully say I draw well are animals, and the "moment" of good rendering (well, drawing, you know, inking brain image to paper) is very, very infrequent. Seems you have some sweet skills at your disposal quite often.

There haven't been any pictures of Merrill that have to do with her stumbling tongue & toes, and her poor sense of direction, have there? Come to think of it, blood and purely-Merrill poses (the latter of which I'll never complain about) seem to be the only FanArt so far, unless I've missed something.

ahh ok I see. I never really ink and start by the colors. Though Im trying to change that. But  I could never imagine doing so in Flash...just feels wrong to me, like trying to draw in Indesign^^ But If it works for you, cool :D

while we're already at it, might as well add my current WIP of ma Hawke and Merrill, not really far :)

But who would want to draw in InDesign? It's more suitable for making covers.

I'm not a huge fan of Illustrator myself. Namely because of the pen tool.

Yeah, drawings look nice in Illustrator. But Ctrl + C then Ctrl + V'ing the image into a different editor (except for Flash) makes the drawing all blocky. That's "natural" though.

Anyway, nice drawing. I myself can't draw for poop, so yeah... No "revolutionizing" (in a sense) ideas.
I've always been someone that wants to break the habit, to make something new. Sadly, I can hardly realize this when it comes to drawing.

I love Illustrator for graphic/logo design work, and I've recently grown fond of it for certain styles of inking. And it's my program of choice for comic speech bubbles. The pen tool takes getting used to, but after  years of practice, I rarely have trouble with it. I love it for certain kinds of jobs.

I'm far less skilled with a pencil than I am with Photoshop. Not that I'm horribly with pencils, just that I have more control when using digital art programs, and that's one of the reasons I prefer them. I once did a white charcoal drawing of fencers for a figure drawing class that came out amazing, though. And I still can't figure out what I did to pull it off, because I've never been able to duplicate it. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/pinched.png[/smilie]

I do love doodling in pen on a pad or on class notes, though. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/whistling.png[/smilie]

I don't think so, that I can recall. Thus far though, none of my fan art ideas for her involve her blood magic. They usually involve her adorkableness or (generally) good-natured temper. I already wrote down a short doodle comic idea I have for once I've finished this one.

I like playing around and finding new ways to do things. Some of my  favorite technqiues were discovered by complete accident. But that's the great thing about these art programs - there's almost no limit to different kinds of approaches. I love seeing how others do things different in them. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/grin.png[/smilie] Nice picture so far, by the way!

That's because Illustrator works in Vectors, as does Flash. But Photoshop/most other image programs are bitmap/pixel based.

Same here.

It's what makes her adorable.  And it adds to her character.

Wow. I wish my doodles looked like that. My only decent "artwork" has made sweat bead on my brow, my doodling is quite literally what any eight year old would do in a textwork. In fact, it usually isn't even recognizable "things". I know what you mean completely with the inability to draw something twice; I absolutely love it when I can produce something I enjoy looking at, but 95% of my efforts are in vain, and it starts feeling wretched.

Bit random, but I've always wanted to have a tattoo, I just haven't been able to come up with anything I'd like to have engraved in my flesh. But "Dalish", over Merrill's Dalish Pariah tree symbol, and "Pariah" underneath it, has had me wondering for a few days. Pity I don't know of anybody I'd trust engraving Merrill's face into my left bicep; That would liven things up when the shirt comes off.

And I wish I could draw better than I can. I've improved over the years, but I still nitpick at things. Different people, different skills. I can't remember numbers worth crap, for instance. I switch them around - like remembering 42 as 24. And I can't do even basic math without writing it out long hand most of the time. I take longer to figure out numerical data than most people do.

True, true. I shouldn't complain, actually.

I know my way with words pretty well.

...Well, in Dutch anyway. I can turn almost any English text I'm writing in a huge mess.

And I know my way with certain parts of history as well.

Perhaps I should become a writer...

...Nah. I always was very interested in game programming and history, so I picked game development.

Yeah, saw it now.

True, Illustrator works in vectors. So does Flash. I knew about this already for quite some time.

I'd like to see this feature more often, though. Makes images look more awesome. And that's what we need: more awesome.

Though Microsoft Paint does not need it. MS Paint is too epic for that.

MS Paint is heavily underestimated. Believe me when I say that.

There's advantages and disadvantages to each.  Vectors are better for images that have few colors, and are meant to be enlarged or shrunk to any size and still retain the same detail. Like logos, for instance. But run into problems when you get into multitudes of colors and layers.

Pixels are better for more detail and layers like paintings. Which is why I tend to use vector programs for line art (keeps them crisp and I can resize them if neeed be), but programs like Photoshop for coloring.

Oh, I could draw the fencers themselves again. But I can't figure out how I got white charcoal to look good. I've always sucked with it, and I've sucked again using it ever since. I've yet to reproduce the kinds of shading/lines I had here using white charcoal. D'oh. :pinched:

Have to say I liked her new outfit she gets and how she can actually tanks mobs with the amount of hp she has and she always putting a nice barrier around me. I really felt bad for her naivety aiding to her clans death and I felt the romance was good.

I think I know who you're talking about. Their faces were structured different, but they had the same hair. It amused me when I ran into him. My first Hawke, Declan, during Act 1 also looked a lot like the bad poet that tries to hit on Isabela. I didn't see the bad poet until my third replay though, so it caught me off guard and I sat there laughing at my computer for quite a while.

I always took Merrill's banter with Varric about elves frolicking as an intentional joke on her part. I don't think she's always completely oblivious - there's traces of subtle, dry humor here and there. I like that about her.

I agree. I've seen some argue that Merrill must be very dense/naive to think that muggings are fascinating or pickpocketing is a "friendly gesture". I never took those comments literally. I think Merrill's sarcasm is too subtle for some to pick up on.

Of course, there are times where she is very out of her depth (brothels and broth, anyone?), but come on, it's culture shock. She's all the more adorable for it.

Yeah same here. I think that sometimes Merrill has a very dry sense of humor, to the point where considering she's sometimes awkward and a tad naive people presume she's just being stupid. I say no though.
