I always took Merrill's banter with Varric about elves frolicking as an intentional joke on her part. I don't think she's always completely oblivious - there's traces of subtle, dry humor here and there. I like that about her.

I agree. I've seen some argue that Merrill must be very dense/naive to think that muggings are fascinating or pickpocketing is a "friendly gesture". I never took those comments literally. I think Merrill's sarcasm is too subtle for some people to pick up on.

I've always thought she was sincere in her gush about the pickpocketing, but subtly being sarcastic about it being the greeting, and how nobody must like her. The pickpocketing comment in Hawke's mansion is a lot less subtle; I'm surprised so many people, ah, lack the subtlety to understand a fictional character Posted Image

Well, I can see her finding muggings fascinating in the sense that she's never seen one before and it's new to her - part of her curiosity about humans and city life. But I highly doubt she genuinely believed it was an alienage greeting, yeah.

Of course, there are times where she is very out of her depth (brothels and broth, anyone?), but come on, it's culture shock. She's all the more adorable for it.

No, I'm pretty sure that she's being serious in the mugging conversation. It's unrealistic, yeah, but that's Merrill for you.

I believe she mixes her general fascination with city life and human culture with her dry sense of humor. So some of things she says can be misleading if one's not paying attention.

The mugging comment is debatable. Like I said, I think it's a mixture. Growing up among the Dalish would probably make her familiar with bandits or highwaymen, so she knows what's happening is bad, but it's fascinating to watch since it's in the city. Or something like that. What Dalish said really.

Exactly. :wizard: And it's one of the main reasons I love listening to her banters and commentary on things.

Obviously, her clan doesn't think of her as a moron; When they aren't being flat-out hostile (Very, very rare) they seem to treat her as an intelligent person. One of my favourite conversations:

Aveline: You're incredibly talented, Merrill. I can see you are meant for great things.
Merrill: Thank you!
Aveline: But you're stupid.
Merrill: I'm sorry, what?
Aveline: Don't you think it would be better to work on where you are now, instead of recreating old glory?
Merrill: No. No, that's kind of the opposite of what I've been saying. I'm the stupid one? Whatever.

Merrill; Take her while she's sweet or subtle, or you're gonna get your ass whooped.

I think the context is different.  I doubt the Dalish robbed other Dalish in the middle of camp.  While she's familiar with theft, perhaps she's not familiar with it happening in a more intimate setting like it happens with in a city, especially an Alienage.

This is still when she is earlier in her time in the Alienage. She's used to Elves working together. It most likely took her a while (And a lot of Varric's money) to realize that many of the Elves are only out for themselves and not for each other.

I wonder if Varric was ever cursing himself for his investments in watching over Merrill and her house, when spreading a rumor about the new demon-dealing bloodmage alienage resident would probably do the job for him.

Doting. Gotta love it.

That probably would have gotten her killed.

Yeah, Kirkwall isn't a good place for Varric to bring attention to her blood magic. Nowhere is, really, but Kirkwall especially.

I would imagine she'd have more than underwear. I've worn chainmail, and without some fabric in between, I can't imagine the chafing from running around all day.

Plus, I couldn't see through the mesh I wore. Sorry for the dream execution by crushing Posted Image

Merrill's chainmail is not as enmeshed as it ought to be. It looks like there's only one layer of links (and general black paint underneath) where there ought to be another set of links, plus some sort of leather or cloth.

Anyway, speaking of chainmail, here's Merrill using regular Dalish armor for her secondary:

Well, here is the Merrill tag I was working on, similar to the other one, but I think it is better:

Hm. Do you have a version of the one we're both using, but without the green color filter over everything?

Criticizing a Dragon Age fan art for having an unrealistic amount of blood is like criticizing a Day of the Living Dead fan art for having zombies.

That's true. And it's not supposed to be realistic blood in any way... it's a stylistic choice. The artist's other Dragon Age fanarts all have the "bloody" theme. It's just that, a theme.

I'm not saying that anyone has to like it, but any criticism of the blood as "unrealistic" makes me think that someone's missing the point :P

Merrill's voice acting when you refuse to give her the Arulin'Holm is really good. She sounded really angry, it was perfect.
