She moves in with you. Her regular clothes are too feral for Hightown. Simple explanation.

But yet she still doesnt wear shoes, and steals from peoples flower gardens.:P

Well, what do you expect, a refined Merrill? Besides, where else would she find flowers, and how would she find out the textures of various nasty substances on the ground?

Do you mean to imply that she's unrefined?

Apparently, Mr. Gaider begged for shoes, but the art team wouldn't give in.

I'd really like to know why BioWare decided all elves hate shoes. It's a curious thing.

Well, I don't necessarily like shoes. When there's snow, yes, but I don't tend to use them in the summer time. Of course, when you wear size 15s, they weigh you down, too. Javaris says he thinks he'll sell boots, maybe City Elves can't afford them, so typically don't think of wearing them, and Dalish don't need them? Posted Image

I chalk it up to the Dalish like the feel of the earth and the city elves can't afford them. But, realistically - art style. Personally, I like Merrill's lack of shoes. It does feel odd that almost all the elves don't have soles, though.

Also, screenshot! I love this scene, regardless of the path. =]

Definately. It's also the one time I prefer male Hawke's voice because the way Boulton delivered "Merill. It's alright." is just pure <3.

And wait a second. Isn't Kenley balding by that point in the game? I watch you on Deviantart, you can't fool me. :P

I prefer male Hawke's voice over Lady Hawke's. Hers is a little too... Light? I dunno. I don't dislike it - it's a nice voice. I just enjoy male Hawke's voice more. But I'm probably biased, as 99% of the time I prefer playing male characters in games.

Oo, you have a DA account? Which one of my watchers are you?

Also: Multiple playthroughs. And I've changed some things around with his looks. His act 3 beard is different now, for instance. I decided he can't grow mustches.

Some elves had shoes. I remember a few in the Dalish camp did, and one had on boots.

This is the one part of the rival romance that I don't like. If you were previously having a heavy-hearted discussion, and with Hawke almost undoubtedly acting concerned or even stern/strict with her, the sudden "Merrill... it's alright!" made it seem like Hawke did a rather jarring 180, mood-wise. In my opinion, anyway. The friendship path wasn't nearly as angsty but I felt the scene was a lot smoother there.

Besides, with all the other nasty things happening in Kirkwall, I prefer the friendship romance so there's at least one lighthearted thing going on in Hawke's little world.^_^

What is your DA account?

I dont have one myself, but I stalk a few, and your art looks a lot like some that I have seen.

(I think it is yours actually, the art in it has Leliana with a Warden that looks just like your avatar.)

I'm Leonhart-strife on DA. Though there's really no point in seeing my gallery as I hardly put anything in it.

I think Wyatt emotes a little more in most of her lines, and I prefer her voice for the sarcastic personality (my Kara Hawke). But Boulton does the aggressive voice best, which is the default for Emrys, my favorite Merrillmancing mage. The diplomatic voice gets mixed in to both characters depending on how I roleplay them.

Edit: Forum formatting apparently hates me today

hollychan. It's an old screenname from middle school, but after 7+ years, I don't  want to restart a DA account just for a namechange.

But yeah, you've seen my art there - I drew a lot of Leliana stuff with Legam (mage in my avatar) last year.

I agree - that's one of the reasons I like the friendship romance scene more.

Full gallery or no, I like to take a look at who's on my watchlist if I get the chance. Thanks!

(Edit: Sidenote - I noticed your Firefly avatar there. I've recently gotten into that series myself. Friend lent it to me and I'm slowly going through the series. :D)

I thought she emoted less than Bolton, personally. To be fair, though, I only did a Lady Hawke with the Diplomatic personality, so I haven't heard much of her aggressive/humorous lines. It was... Eh. I think I prefer blending diplomatic with the other two, rather than it being the main personality. Granted, I've only done diplomatic with a female Hawke, so I might try it with a male and see what I think then.

Sarcastic was my favorite to play, and that's what I have for my main Hawke, Declan (he's the one who uses Legam's import). Kenley's is aggressive, though he's more of a grump than "rawr! I crush you!" 100% of the time. So he tends to have a fair amount of diplomatic lines and the rare sarcastic one, too.

That's awesome! A fellow browncoat in the making. :D It's a really great series that should never have been canceled as quickly as it did. I've had an on and off obsession with it for the past couple years.

Ah, you're stronger than I as I don't have the stomach for full diplomatic character. It wreaks of goody two shoes-ness that I find boring to play. Angsty, angry, fun characters are my usual cup of tea. Diplomatic lines exist to be blended, nothing more. My teeth ache otherwise.

I prefer sarcastic for Lady Hawke and aggresive for male Hawke. I have a sarcastic male, but he's not canon and is perfectly okay with that. Emrys is my favorite, which is a bit funny as Kara was supposed to be, but the import for her wasn't complete when I got the game and I get way too attached to first-time playthroughs.

Emrys boils down to a jerk with a heart of gold. He 's acts like an ass to everyone, but secretly loves them all. I've mentioned him a few times in this thread before. He rivalmanced Merrill as he doesn't trust blood magic with all the crazies he's run into and that one incident with his mother. He'd been more open to it until that point. He loves Merrill too much to lose her to some mirror demon. But he'd never admit that. Nope.

I like friendly romancing Merrill for those reasons, as well. Though, I wouldn't call it lighthearted... More, well, goodhearted. You know, a supportive, loving relationship is refreshing after all the giant spider attacks, gang wars, serial killers, deaths in the family, invasions, betrayals, murder... List goes on...

To sum "Happy Merrillmance" up, somebody needs to do a FanArt of Merrill picking a flower out of a garden in Hightown.

The only thing I have to say is that her ears point upward too much. DAII's elves have ears that continue on from their jaws without much change in angle.

Several of my good friends have been fans of it for years, I just never got around to seeing it. Then I mentioned never seeing it in passing to aforementioned friend and she instantly lent it to me.

I prefer playing good hearted characters. I just prefer them with other traits mixed in. Imperfect heroes and all that. But I wanted to try out each personality at least once. If I do a diplomat male run, it's definitely going to be more mixed this time.

That's similar to Kenley, though for the first Act he's very mercenary (demanding payment for work) out of necessity. And he's more concerned for his friends/family than every random person he sees. After becoming Champion, he does develop more concern for Kirkwall as a whole, but his first priority is always his family/friends. Doesn't mean he won't yell at them when he thinks they're being idiots, though. ;)

Paint.NET. I can't afford PS for something I do for kicks. And yes, my sigs are done in it too,

I'm the sort who prefers to treat those the way they deserve it. Kind and diplomatic to the innocent and cruel and ruthless to the criminals all around bad people. Though with the new attitude system in DA2? I'm all over Sarcastic. It's just too damn amusing. It kind of kills me to go all rival on Merrill though, maybe it's for the best so she destroys that damned mirror.

edited to add.

I think I actually like Varric so much cause he basically does the "Give them what they deserve". He goes at Carver because he's so mean. He takes shots at Fenris and Anders for the same reason at times. I kind of wish he'd just kick them all the shins when they are mean to Daisy.

I spent over $500 for a student edition of the CS5 suite. That's about a quarter of the cost for the professional license though. So - I completely understand digital art on a budget. I've used some freeware programs like GIMP and Blender, but I've never heard of Paint.NET. Are you using vectors to draw it? Kinda looks that way.

That's how most of my video game character are, to some degree or another. Declan's sarcastic and occasionally kind; rarely aggressive, unless Bethany's threatened. Kenely is direct with almost everyone, but diplomatic in casual conversation with friends... Unless they say something stupid or ask something he considers obvious. Then he's sarcastic or direct. He's aggressive mostly with strangers or money-grubbing fools that try his patience:

I'm not doing vectors, but drawing on a huge canvas to shrink later.

I once tried GIMP, never liked it.

I tried GIMP long after I had Photoshop. Found it too limiting comparatively, but found it a good substitute if I didn't have access to Photoshop. I tend to suggest it to people who want to try out drawing on the computer, but can't afford many of the art programs out there.

My main tip without knowing the specifics of the tools is to connect the gaps and smooth off the "squarness" at the ends of the lines, unless that's a style choice you're intentionally going for.

I've probably spent hundreds of dollars on pencils over the past twenty years. And paper. Another reason I prefer digital art aside from control/style is that in the long run, it's actually more cost effective for me. I spent waaaay more money on the art supplies I needed during college than I did on Photoshop/Illustrator/Flash/etc.

I don't think they do. Which is kind of surprising, really, because it seems like there are a lot of male elves who seem to be getting a little bare up there. Thought they'd have more lushious hair than humans, really.
