Planescape and Baldur's Gate are both based in pre-existing fantasy worlds. Worlds that were created by someone else before the respective game developers made video games about them.
Those were worlds unknown to most players which had in any case never been presented as a visual, interactive environment before and who cares anyway, the settings weren't what made those games great if you read the post you are quoting.

I wish I had played Blood Omen when it first came out. I probably would have loved it. Instead, I recently downloaded it off PSN, and I don't know if I can finish it. It hurts my eyes, like a lot of the blurry, brown games of that era, and the controls and combat feel kind of awful, compared with, say, A Link to the Past.
Does Soul Reaver hold up any better? Anybody?
Well dude I for one was being ironic, Blood Omen is a terrible game and you shouldn't play it. Soul Reaver is better as it actually had an artistic style, but honestly it probably isn't worth playing either. If you want some smart platforming hit up those new Mario games set in space and if you want the vampire thing then just replay Vampire; Bloodlines.
