Did you used to have an avatar of Marilyn Monroe? Im not sure if it was you or someone else that had it with The Illusive Man star behind her.

I did not. My avatars have been the woman with the six-pack, Miranda, and this one.

Do you like Bloodmagic because you think it's a power that has good uses for society?

Blood magic is all natural. If they'd added the addiction mechanic for lyrium potions instead of foisting off all the drawbacks on Templars, I think this would be more clear.

Instead we have the PC and mage characters continuously chucking down a substance that seems to lead to mental degradation, addiction, and insanity without any negative effects.

There is, of course, the fact that detrimental effects to such a gameplay element would be totally silly (from a gameplay perspective). I think it's a matter of suspension of disbelief.

I don't "like" blood magic any more than I like... normal?... magic. I like Merrill's use of it because she owns it, baby. She's not going around summoning demons (though, it'd be cool if she were... demonologist specialization anyone?!). She's using her own blood to cast spells. I think that's a very neutral statement. It's really hard to like or dislike it.

What I don't like is telling her to stop. That, to me, is like telling Anders or Bethany to stop casting spells, or telling Fenris to stop using his super-powers.

It's all about how you use it. Use it for evil purposes and sure, it's evil. Use it to heal people and defend them from danger... hardly anything evil about that.

EDIT: Scratch that... even if you're using it with an evil purpose, the talent itself is just that, a talent..

After all, a gun can't be considered good or evil.

true but of course its not EVIL, just dangerous. one is at risk of not only possession, but also killing oneself or others by using your/their life energy.

She started using it when she needed it. Fenris didn't always phase through people's chests to squish their hearts. He does it because he can, and because it's useful.

Okay... been away for awhile and have no idea whatsoever what happened in the last 200 or so pages
Anyways... stupid comic is stupid but I had this idea and had to draw it somehow...
So, imagine Merrill actually finishes her mirror and THIS is the true function of it.
Enjoy ;)

So, I just did "Mirror Mirror" and got Merrill the arulin'holm, and some things she said made me think. She says that the reason she used blood magic was because the Keeper refused to help her cleanse the mirror.

Wasn't Marethari, in Origins, even more interested in the eluvian than Merrill? What changed? She should know that the blight killed Tamlen, not the mirror. So why is she so opposed to purifying it?

And what's the deal with this "Our ancestors meant it to be forgotten" nonsense? Their ancestors didn't have a chance to "mean" for anything. They were slaughtered and enslaved by Tevinter. There's no indication whatsoever that that anyone except Marethari thinks the mirrors are OMZdangerous.

When did she start sucking at being Dalish?

She doesn't seem to be the type to actually repair the mirror; More likely just look at it, think about it, and go back to telling stories. Of course, she wouldn't be worried about the dangers of the mirror until somebody else showed interest in it; I think it can be agreed that she's prideful, and thinks she's superior to others in Elven lore and magic. She demonstrated this when she attempted to fight the demon and found it was far beyond her.

Whether or not she's interested in repairing about it, she doesn't want to learng anything at all. She just says "Cool, now forget it ever existed or I'll kick you out the clan."

Why?

Everyone already agrees that she's the second-worst Keeper, like... ever. I think people need to jump on the "She was a crappy elf!" bandwagon, too.

except for the fact that she asks Hawke and two others along to kill her if she goes the way of the abomination...which isn't exactly under-preparing...

Didn't we have this conversation already? ;)

Er, I got confused.

I'm just beginning to write again, I need something varified. The Keeper informed Hawke & Co that Merrill would be leaving with them as soon as they arrived and spoke with her, correct? As in, before they headed up Sundermount?

Great, thanks.

Is it just me, or would somebody else like to see a Merrill fanart of her on the floor boarding up a rat hole, while a couple of rats are on her study table eating her cheese?

*Adds it to her "potential fan art" list*

No promises, though.

What is it with Kirkwallers and leaving cheese out? Gamlen's got an ageing cheese wheel as well...

Gamlen's got an aging porridge bowl, too. I think Gamlen is unique in his attempts to antiquify food, though; Merrill just seems to go through a LOT of cheese. Maybe she thought the rats looked underfed?

I find consorting with demons to be dangerous and ignorant, but blood magic isn't necesarily evil. Neither is consorting with demons necessarily, you could apporach the situation with good intentions. That doesn't mean it is intellgient or right to do so. Blood magic isn't 'evil', It's just very sketchy.

It's sketchy because of what it can be used for. Magic as a whole is sketchy, because it can light people on fire with a thought. Of course, that doesn't mean that lighting people on fire is intelligent or right to do :P

Nuclear power is evil because of weapons!

Oh god, I just realized something. She leaves cheese out. She describes Hightown as "the rich, fancy part of the city with no rats in it". She keeps going back to the alienage and doesn't really like the Hawke estate.

It's the rats, she totally misses her rats.
