My mage Hawke was spiritual but not religious. She believed in Andreste and the Maker, but not the Chantry.
My warrior Hawke was the type of person who'd call herself an Andrestean but only celebrated on
Christmas Feastday?, held no religious views, and pretty much never thought about it when she was out of the chantry.

I used to think the Lawful Good archetype was boring. As I grew up, and my real-life views matured, my opinion changed. It's still by no means the "default" for me, though. My "baseline" is actually a lot like how I view Merrill.* Just trying to do the right thing and using the tools in front of her. If she's gotta be a blood mage to do what's best, then that's cool. Her ideas about "what's best" are often much... bigger?... than Merrill's "gotta make the mirror work and also be nice to people!" but the foundations are there.
I wouldn't say Lawful Good, though that's what I tend to in cRPGs. In PnP, I also do LN and LE well.
My contention has always been that a well-played LE character is far less problematic for a group of adventurers and tended to do more good overall than a CG one.
I'm not sure I see Merrill as a good person in the usual RPG sense.
