So I was trying out the rivalmance with Merrill last night. Before going to talk to her after refusing to give her the Arulin'holm, I emptied out my party, because it always feels weird with two others staring at you while you talk, like they can in some of the scenes. Also, some people tend to butt in (Anders, Fenris) while you're chatting sometimes. Anyway, so... party empty. Just Hawke.

After she kicks you out--second talk, where she says, "Get out of my house!" and the game actually kicks you out of her house--I was left standing in the Alienage at night. Mind you, I'd gone to visit in the daytime, but whatever. So I assume I can't go walking back into her house, or she'll, like, do Something Awful (or the game won't let me).
At this point, I haven't cleared out any of the nighttime gangs. In this playthrough, my Hawke is a squishy mage. SQUISHY MAGE. I think I can totally make it to an area exit without encountering any... random encounters.

No. Nope. No way. I ended up running into three different gangs. First one gang, and as I ran away from them and their dogs, I spawned/picked up two more groups of the same gang. There were SO MANY RED DOTS and people chasing after me it was, like, ten times worse than kiting the skeletons in Amgarrak. I ended up dying due to the sheer number of them. Then I wondered if Merrill would be upset if she knew that her kicking Hawke out would lead to his grisly deathly death. Probably, yes. :crying::crying:

I did reload, and turns out you can wander back into her house, and then use that to access the rest of the map instead of braving the streets alone at night. And dying.

What they really should have done was that the moment you entered her house again, you get a cutscene of Merrill yelling, "I told you to get out!" with her casting a spell and screen fades to black. Then you would end up outside her house once more, but with an injury :D

Even better: show her casting a spell, then cut to an exterior view and show Hawke flying ass-first through the door.

Hahahahaha! That would've been awesomely hilarious. Especially since (even though Merrill, when specced right, is a seriously strong fighter) Angry Merrill is sorta like an angry puppy. You get all, "Awww, you're trying to act all mad and you just end up adorable."

The exact same thing happened to me!  I was a pretty decent rogue dual-wielder at that point, but there were SO MANY gangs after me I was taking a serious beating and chugging health potions.  On top of that, I still hadn't memorized the street layout well enough to bolt right for the nearest exit so I was pretty much just running in circles trailing two or three angry street gangs.  I finally made it to Gamlen's house and have never been so happy to see that cranky bastard...  :pinched:

Thankfully, when I did get home the Hawke estate Merrill was waiting for me and romance began, so I didn't stay angry very long.

I had Fenris and Anders with me.

That was an awkward walk to the hanged man....

After hearing this, my Hawke went to the Hanged Man and bought about a soverign's worth of cheap ale while crying into Isabela's ample bosom (or she assumed she did, but she was severly inebriated, so who knows. Maybe it was Varric's.). On her drunken way home, she was mauled by a pack of mabari and died whispering the elf's name--or she tried to, but her throat was kind of torn out so... Oh, Hawke... :crying:

Funny, that happened to me one time. No ****, there I was...

Love the Merrill fanart. And that vid has doomed my siblings forevermore.

Edit: Might have another section of fanfic up tonight. First was over 600 words, this one is over 1000. Just have to recopy and reread, get as many kinks as I personally can find.

My mage is romancing Fenris, but this information definitely levels the playing field between mage and warrior on my next playthrough. An excuse to kill off Carver almost makes up for having to kill of Bethany at the beginning. And, if I play a warrior, there's no way I'm letting Bethany die, so I won't get this scene.

DECISIONS DECISIONS.

Which class do you guys think works better for a Merrillmance? Warrior or mage?

Probably mage, as Bethany getting killed by an ogre makes you feel less guilty than killing her in the tunnels, right? Posted Image

Well, that's the thing. If I play a warrior, Bethany lives, full stop.

I mean independent of anything else, just thinking about the PC and Merrill.

I still haven't solidified a concept for her, and that could undoubtedly steer the class decision. But, the class could also steer the concept.

But, mostly, I just wanted an opportunity to say "Merrillmance," because it's the cutest word I've used in months.

For me , warrior...though since mages can be blood mages...friend-mancing Merrill is really easy, although since warriors can be reavers( which may be the best spec in the game bar none) they even out really well. I also tend to side with the mages in most of the major conflicts besides the final one...where I have a tendancy to side with Meredith...but that's mostly because I can't stand Anders or Orsino...so having Merrill at max friendship or rivalry at that point is a must. I also think warriors will have an easier time rival-mancing her...since they also get the 'templar' spec...though the none of the mages in the game never acknowledge that fact...neither do Meredith,Cullen or any of the templars for that matter.

That's what I was expecting... I just love playing mages so much :crying:

But my dedication to the story is unshakable. I suffered through a bugged Anders-mance, I can play a warrior again.

But... mages suck. :?

I see Merrill as being isolated from the daily life of her clan. Given that an apostate Hawke would have to live in secrecy, always hiding herself, and spend time studying the arcane arts as well as learning the self-discipline or willpower needed to resist demons, she could easily relate to Merrill and find a number of similarities between them.

Which is not good in my eyes.

Merrill doesn't need someone who relates to being isolated but someone who's used to being knee-deep in the muck of normal life. Warrior Hawke is never tempted by blood magic, doesn't spend her nights pouring over arcane secrets, and doesn't worry about demons brainjacking her.

Edit: Thank you again with your help on Awaken. I will probably do 1e4 first and then talk to you about the changes. I found what you said very helpful.

Yeah, I was hoping that if I left Merrill back during that quest, she'd be taken. But nope, Bethany.
