Does it default to romance or the highest friendship?

It defaults to romance. If none, then the companion with the highest friendship/rivalry.

Templar you saved previously from Blood mages: They took your friend! I wanted no part of it!
Hawke: Varric? But Varric's right here.
Templar: No your other friend!
Hawke: Isabela is also here.
Templar: No, the Elf!
Hawke: Again, Merrill is also right here.
Merrill: 'ello!
Templar (looking especially agitated): The Elf you're always fighting with since you are a Mage and he hates mages.
Hawke: So - they kidnapped and could quite possibly kill Fenris?
Templar: Yes, thats the chap's name. You should probably get going, they were gettin' antsy.
Hawke: No, what I am going do is go get a drink at the Hanged Man then give Isabela this fertility idol. Immediately afterwards I will bang her in the arse until Merrill, while working on her cursed mirror back at the alienage, blushes for seemingly no immediate reason until she remembers overhearing this exact conversation.
Isabela: *shrugs and nods*
Varric: *chuckles to himself*
Merrill: *isn't paying strict attention as she scratches her foot on her leg*
Templar: But he is your friend!
Hawke: And I say you've been quaffing the lyrium just a scooch too much, crazy pants.

Templar: I think he said it was Fenris. You have to save him! Hurry
Hawke: ...I ...don't think so.
Templar: Please! He keeps moping around, insulting our friends, and making us all depressed! If he keeps this up, there's going to be suicides. You have to save him!
Hawke: You know, you're not making a very good case for me to help you.

So which companion would be the easiest to kidnap??

Isabela. Just offer her drinks.

She fights meaner when drunk.

Merrill. Just make a trail of sparkly things to a back-alley and toss a sack over her head.

Alternate:
Templar: Help! Please help!
Merrill: Yes, what is it?
Templar: I, um, lost some kittens up in a tree. And this armor I have to wear is too heavy for me to climb it. Won't someone light enough to climb a tree help?
Merrill: I can do that. Where are they?
Templar: In this back-alley. *points* Where my eight friends who are also wearing armor too heavy to climb trees are waiting.

Kittens are more likely how Anders would get kidnapped. I imagine Merrill would approach saving those kittens as the most important quest ever besides the obvious. Think Kate Beaton levels of comically serious dedication.

Merrill: I don't see any kittens, there isn't even a tree.
Templar: Alright grab her now.
*Merrill dodges the Templar and drives her knife through his neck, in a swift cut she pulls the knife through the bones of his face bisecting his skull. The Templar falls to his knees and the left side of his head seperates from the rest of his body. The body falls forward in front of Merrill standing with knife in one hand and staff in the other. The Templars take a step back and draw their swords. Merrill cuts herself to power a blood magic spell that sends the Templars carreening through the alley. One survivor left Merrill jams her staff to his throat and questions him.*
Merrill: By the Dread Wolf tell me where those kittens are or I will end you.

Merrill: Liar! *stabs  him in the shoulder*
Templar: THERE REALLY AREN'T ANY KITTENS
Merrill: Oh a tough one...Guess it's time to use some of my more creative spells....
*six minutes later*
Templar: *crying* They're in the chantry in a storage box *cries more*
Merrill: See that wasn't so hard. *bounds off after kittens*
Templar: *in fetal position* Make it stop mama.....make the bad memories go away.....*cries*

Worked on it a little in between phone calls at work...  what started as a sketch will likely end up as a full on painting heh.

I added tattoos, narrowed the face a little, blocked in some stuff here and there.  I think the body is looking OK, proportion wise, I don't want her to look human after all :).

Hopefully tomorrow (or later today really) won't be as busy work wise and I can get some real progress done.

Feedback is appreciated.

Wow, its like the perfect capturing of her feelings every time she has to ask Hawke to help her do something with the damn mirror. Love that you got the elongated, slender neck. I see too many artists who just give her the standard neck. Elongated neck = that much more to trail kisses upon.Posted Image

I liked the wider face better, I think, but I don't have time to go back and find the previous version of the sketch to compare...

ed. Actually, that kinda matches her in-game facial appearance. It's odd, because Merrill's face looks a little bit wide in some cutscenes...

Last kiss with Merrill before the end; I love this scene:

Marian Hawke (friend, mages):

Custom Hawke (rival, templars):

Re: Merrill drawing--THOSE EYES! *dies*

...on another note, glad you guys found amusement in the unfortunate death video. I was capping stuff the other day and remembered someone had captured all the Merrillmance moments, but it was a friendmance. Would people be interested in the same thing, but having it be a rivalmance?

The song works wonders for merrill rivalmance, heck, merrill as a rival in general.

What does she say if you try to take zevran up on his "offer"?

You can't. The moment Zevran makes his "offer", Merrill chimes in and says: "I think we've heard enough from you."

im also wondering right now, why doesn't merrill's last quest have an option for if your a rival with merrill to encourage her to face "demon" keeper herself, to prove to the keeper, hawke, and herself that she can take care of herself?

Wouldn't that be friendship Hawke? Rival Hawke seems to think that she's either wrong about what she's doing or that she's in over her head.

Of course, Merrill has never said she could face a pride abomination in one-on-one battle, so it doesn't make much sense for Friendship Hawke either.

I facepalmed at the foreshadowing for Merrill at the end:
Name of the cave: PRIDE'S END.

Obvious names is obvious.

wouldn't merrill ask a friendship hawke to help out, though i do agree with you.

in rivalry, merrill would want to prove herself, so i think it would be merrill that challenges Marethari/Audacity, and hawke would have options to try to stop her or let her try, and help out if she runs into trouble.

or hawke challenges and merrill steps in to prove herself, in which player takes control of merrill and merrill alone.

the duel would be Merrill finally realizing what she had done, even if it was to help her people caused more trouble than she wanted.

Why do you think merrill says "you were right" when she smashes the mirror in the rival path?
