Aveline and Varric: The same.
Anders: After you get all his upgrades.
Fenris: Don't know.
Isabela: After you get the talk where she says she has feelings for Hawke.
Merrill: At the beginning of Act 3.
I don't like the sex scene causing the visual shift. Why would Isabela start wearing black just because she slept with me?

Merrill: Hawke, I'm interested in you romantically!
Hawke: Cool!
*sexytimes*
Merrill: I love you!
Hawke: Live with me!
ALL IN THE SPAN OF FIVE MINUTES AND TWENTY THREE SECONDS.
Hawke: When you recount this to Isabela or Varric, tell them the sex took two *hours* and it involved more than me dressing you in sexy lingerie.
I wish this thread would move as fast as their relationship.
Anders puts us to shame, peeps. What is it about him that attracts all the gays/straights/straightswhowishtheyweregays? Anders loves kittens, but Merrill is a kitten! And she's way less ****ed-up.
Maybe that's it? There's less of a need to "fix" Merrill? Even when you friendmance Anders, he's still majorly ****ed in the head.
There is really two Anders <DLC and DA2> so he gets twice the love.

Mourning the loss of her dignity, perhaps?
Hawke: What about... love?
Isabela: Oh FFS......

The majority of fans who participate in these types of interactions are female. Fan art and fanfic creators are also predominately women.
It's one of the fishbowl effects of the forums. You'd think Fenris would be the most popular character, but he's not. He's the most popular character with people likely to frequently post on a thread about a character.
This thread is very healthy compared to the Isabela and Aveline threads.
Isabela's thread depresses me, too, but I have more fun talking about Merrill. I can't even remember when I last saw Aveline's thread.
I... didn't know that Fenris's thread was so popular. But, I refuse to go in it. This one time, I said Fenris was kind of maybe not entirely pleasant, and a Fenris fan veritably ripped my head off. I like to think I'm not that defensive about my favorites.

She realized that you got her clothes off just a bit too quickly. The added corset ups the time to "perfect."
I think companions should get visible upgrades whenever we give them new equipment *hem hem*

I like how Aveline's visual progression was linked to her storyline.ishmaeltheforsaken wrote...

I really don't want to go back to the Origin's method. If there was a visual change for *some* characters when we game them one of their four, specific upgrades, that would be nice too, but I don't want a return to constantly switching out equipment.

I read about five posts once from it... They were gushing about his "caterpillar eyebrows"... My father had those, and I was happy as hell I didn't...
To XX55XX: I think I can count the number of Merrill fanfics on one hand. There's six, tops.

Yeah, Aveline's was great, but I'd like it if our other companions got more outfits then just two.Maria Caliban wrote...

WELL AS A MATTER OF FACT, that's exactly what I'm working on right now. Sort of.
And while we're on the subject, let's name Merrill's upgrades! I know they already have names, but imagine that each of the four is an entirely new set of robes. I need four names, peeps! Merrill's gear progression, have at it.

Yeah, personally I didn't mind the static outfits that stayed the same. Overall it gave the artists more freedom to actually make a characters style reflect their personality/job/background.
Granted switching out equipment was addicting in Origins and Mass Effect1, however I'd also say it was not really satisfying at all. Just about every new armor you got you'd think "OOoo I wonder what this will look like!" Then you equip it and it looks like all the other armor you've seen before, the only thing being unique is its stats. That effectively killed the fun for me.
Like I said, it's fun to have armor that reflects them, what they do, and who they are. Rather than "This character wears armor C, which is also what this character wears."

I liked this too, it felt genuine. Merrill's armor change was nice, but it felt like it came out of left field. Aveline's armor fit with her character and her place in respect to the story, I enjoyed that very much and was a bit saddened that it didn't seem to happen with anyone else.

I like to think the new outfit is a gift from Hawke. Like he gets a visiting armorer to get a look at her old Keeper's First get up and "Make it like that but make it say 'Hightown'", then Herren cackles about all the sovereigns they're going to make as Wade moans about the lack of Dragonscales.
Hawke: Can't you at least wear some light mail or something? We seem to run into hordes of bandits three or four times a day. I'd feel better if I didn't have to constantly worry about you getting hit by an arrow; those robes aren't going to be any protection...
Merrill: Ma vhenan... You worry too much. Nothing ever happens. My scarf doesn't even have any holes in it.

Her new outfit is a Dalish design, though. I prefer to think that Hawke gave it to her as a present after they slaughtered the clan. It's white because they had to bleach out the blood stains.Jorrkit wrote...

I would love to see Merrill wear the third costume in future DLC/expansions.
