I just finished my second playthrough where Fenris betrayed me. He managed to KO Hawke; at which point I took control of Merrill and had her beat Fenris to death with her staff.^_^

And I was eating an apple when I read the stuff above. Thanks Maria.<_<

This video has part of the conversation with Varric about Merrill if you're romancing her. (Its towards the end.)

I like that outfit too! But it does look like a burlap sack! Anyway, I've done quite a bit of examining regarding that outfit. The chainmail is totally skintight. It follows the cleft of her buttocks and the curves of the underneath of her breasts... it makes me think the mail was painted onto a nude body model instead of built around it. But my point is that I think her breasts are larger than you give her give her credit for.

Yeah, I think it was just painted on. It lends a more elegant appearance though, because she's mostly covered by the fabric so it's more of an accent than something trashy.

As far as larger than giving credit--I would not give credit for larger sizes, is the point. I find Isabela to be gauche. I subscribe to a more Greco-Roman standard of beauty and proportionality, which Merrill's size matches. Bigger is not better.

(obviously her height and thin frame don't match classical proportions, but that's expected)

Makes you
think? I don't there's any doubt that that's what they did, it's very
evident, or at least evident enough for someone to mod that chainmail
off, which can be found on the DA Nexus, with very little effort.

Did you come into this thread just to cop an attitude?

You say that like it's a bad thing

I think you misunderstood me. I only meant that if you think the second outit is "augmented," then you're underestimating the first outfit's proportions.

You're not the first, I must just have the worst writing style ever, even people who know me personally as the nice guy I am, get me wrong when I'm talking to them online. I'm usually fine so long as I can get the first edit or 2 in before the person I'm talking to actually reads what I typed though.

Well, I haven't and won't do a side by side comparison, but I maintain that they're different. So there.

Maria: with polka dots. and paisley.

edit2: I take that back, since I have both polka dot and paisley cravats.

Anyways, the actual reason I decided to join in on the thread was I was working on a bit of fanart in photoshop, and I was looking for a bit of imput, so I could improve.
I decided to do it mostly because 3DS Max broke down on me, and I didn't feel like fixing/re-installing it, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to take a little foray into the 2D world of art. I don't have a massive amount of experience with photoshop, and I didn't really look at any tutorials, so I'm probably using the worst method for everything I've done, but I seem to be making progress.

It's still very much a work in progress, I've mostly just shaped everything out, and only just begun adding in the finer details. I like how Merrill's eyes turned out, although I'm not a huge fan of her lips at this point. I may decide to redo them after I've finished with the rest of her face, since it's a little hard to judge until it's a little more complete, as for the background, I've just threw that in, with a couple quick filters, because I felt leaving it white would be a little boring, I haven't actually decided yet what should go in the background.

Can anyone confirm if romanced Merrill has a reaction if u decide to "hire a social escort" in the Blooming Rose?

I just tried it out and...she didn't react at all. Weird.

I don't do it, but I heard you get +5 rivalry from her by doing that.

You'll get the +5 rivalry regardless of romance status.

Nice start. Looks like you do things like the same way I do them, block it out and build it up. I know there are other ways but I have found this works best for me, but it takes time. I never really do backgrounds, they can take as long as the main focus in the picture, but are so boring to make. So far its looks good, will have to wait till more is donePosted Image

Chapter 3 of the Merrill Fic. In the words of Stewie Griffin, "Prepare to feel."

Very nice! It's rare to see a fanfic where the characters are so IC in it.

Thank you, really, its great to hear that. I try to get them to be as in character as possible in the stories. I inwardly cringe when I run across instances of waaaaay OOC moments, like MorriganxAlistair romance. I just want to burn it with fire until the ashes can be launched into orbit and eventually atomize within the corona of the Sun.

my thought at the end was: "Would Fenris really wear a white shirt with white hair?"

Then I was appropriately shut up.

Ah Mad Men, once again that show has backed up not only my life choices by my writing ones as well. And here I thought the lace cravat would be the source of contention.

...In alternate universes where I'm not romancing Morrigan, MorriganxAlistair is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. Emphasis on the AU aspect when it comes to fanfiction.

I'm sorry, I'll just head down to the Ninth Circle of Morri Hell now. :pinched:

Good stuff though, Esbatty. I liked the prequel fic too - tieing Hawke and Merrill into chairs while toasting and roasting them is exactly the sort of Isabel and Varric would do. And Bethany's "who wants to see my Taint" line had me in stiches as well.

I lol'd.

Also, guise, I heard a new Merrill line which I hadn't gotten before when I was beginning Sebastian's Act III quest. Hawke was complaining about everybody always talking about the Mage-Templar issues, and Varric commens that even the rats in Darktown are following it.

Merrill: Ooh, really? Who's side are they on?
Varric: Oh, a third side with the Templars, a third side with the Mages, and the last third think everybody should have more cheese.

I'm starting to think that the real reason Merrill keeps returning to her Alienage house is because she misses the rats.

Baron, say hello to Carl Sagan for me. *Combustion Gernade toss*

Hey its cool mang, I don't actively look for it so I proly haven't seen your works. Normally Ximena sends me links to Morristair fic so she doesn't shudder in horror alone.

As for the "Celebration" story, yeah I've been getting a pretty good response about that. People who haven't even touched Sweet Child O' Mine itself are enjoying it just for the speechs and roasting. And writing Drunk Bethany was a personal highlight of the piece for me.

I talked about this on the Fanfiction is a Harsh Tevinter Magister thread (which is apparently a counterpart to my thread?) but I don't like it when people write in present tense.

At this point, I've probably read over 350 novels, 80k-200k, all of which were in past tense. Then I encounter a fan fic in present tense and I can't muddle through it. It's no different than if they decided to write with no capitalization or punctuation.

It's frustrating because it seems to be a popular tense in ff.

I was honestly surprised by the responses in that thread to what you said.

Present tense can work. I personally associate with pulp or noir narration, but I think a deft writer can make it work in any genre. Most writers aren't that deft.

In any case, present-tense narration should serve some purpose. If it doesn't, well... at best, it's a gimmick. At worst, it's a hallmark of someone who simply doesn't know how to write.

Fanfiction is practically by definition amateur (which, considering its etymology, I find incredibly appropriate). I would not expect "most" fanfiction writers to be able to pull off present-tense. And even when a writer is that skilled, very rarely would I expect there to be any cause for it. When it doesn't create an intended effect for the reader, it's just in the way. And then you "can't muddle through it."

If it's not handled well, putting a story in present tense can sap all the feeling out of it and make it seem as though all actions are being taken underwater or possibly on the moon.

"She walks across the room. She opens the drawer. She slices the peanut butter sandwich in half."

This is because the present tense necessarily slows everything down. Which is fine if the effect you're going for is the slow-motion replay of a brief moment in time. I like it better for stream-of-consciousness first-person writing. (And I put both Varric and Merrill's stories in it.) But it is a highly problematic tense to write in. And it drives some people nuts. (See Phillip Pullman's complaints about novels in present tense.)

On a side note: Maybe don't read books by Cormac McCarthy. He writes without commas or quotation marks. You get used to it after a while, but it's very distracting at first.
