That's exactly what I think isn't the case
It's not inconceivable that families would be taxed differently from individuals, but I doubt that marriage has anything to with that. Merrill and Hawke cohabitating would probably be taxed the same as husband and Hawke.

? Who said it had to involve the Maker?
Damn straight. I'd probably exhume an Old God to officiate.
ish: Assuming standard medieval rules apply, persons were not married unless they were married in the eyes of God. Moreover, as far as taxation goes, there was no such thing as community property. The rules of coverture said that the property of the feme covert immediately passed into the exclusive control of the husband, save her dower interest and minus the husband's curtesy interest. Therefore, a married couple would be considered a different legal entity entirely: women had more power and control as unmarried individuals, though they were then subject to taxation on their lands, incomes, etc.
Now, we know a few things about Thedas are "modern"--esp. the relative equality of men and women in arms (cabined in by the various comments people will make about a female Cousland "playing the man" and such), but we don't know if that plays as well in the rest of Thedas (consider the Aveline story or the Silent Sisters; or more appropriately, the way social class intersects gender relations with Orlesian chavaliers).
So the question, as always, is what assumptions to make in absence of direct evidence: modern or medieval precedent? I will lean towards medieval every time. It seems the safer bet.

Merrill vs Bastila. Thats rough. We'd have to break them down into like 6 different categories. I grew up lusting after Jennifer Hale's various portrayals of cartoon and video game characters. But Merrill's voice could make de-Hulkify like that time I found out Egg Nog shakes from jack-in-the-box were seasonal.

I don't want to derail the thread though, make it into a debate on what the best Bioware companion is, we can go to /v/ for that magnificent discussion.
Click this. Merrill fanart; now let's talk about how sexy I find her leg bindings to be so I don't cause a thread reboot.

I remember people initialing comparing Merrill with Tali, before game release, and I can see some of the similarities but they're two wholly different people. Where once I held Tali above all else, I know reside firmly in Merrill-ville.
She is just too badass and precious. No Chik-Tikka Vas Pas can compare to "Feathers" the baby griffon.
