If you bring Anders along Justice goes crazy saying "you would sacrifice an innocent" and then your only option to turn the demon down is to say "Anders is right." This earns you no Merrill rivalry. As long as it's clear your reasons are Feynriel's wellbeing she's good with it.
So the only way to not ****** her off is to bring Anders, which is stupid.

Does anyone know if you're supposed to get rivalry in the Fade for not turning Fenreyal into an abomination? It seems out of character.
As I said in that other thread, I can't imagine that's how it's supposed to work. But I don't know for sure.
*shines the KirbySignal into the sky*
I've never gotten rivalry points there, though.

Like most demon deals, Merrill gains rivalry if you turn down the offer immediately/on principle, rather than hearing them out but deciding against it for other reasons. You can exhaust the conversation options with Torpor but still decline the deal, and you shouldn't gain rivalry with Merrill.
It might be a bug but I've always gotten rivalry even after exhausting the options.
I think it's because the refusal option on the dialogue wheel is the same whether you hear him out or not. They should have just added a new one after you talk to him that's like "Hmm sounds nice but it's not worth it."

Anywho, Rivalry Romance Merrilll kicking me gave me the same emotional reaction as when Alistair stomps off when I spare Loghain. But I had properly romanced Merrill twice before friendship style, so instead of reloading and giving her the dalish carving knife (not even gonna attempt to spell that), I just stayed kicked out, and moped around Kirkwall soloing gang fights with Mac (My mabari was named after Loghain).

Then I guess they were wrong. I thought once a friendship/Rivalry stance was set - it was set.
Well, that's actually the case. Since I was already at 100 friendship, the path was set, so even if denying her the knife should in theory switch her over to the rival path, it didn't.

I loved how much of an emotional rollercoaster her romance was. Getting betrayed, kicked out... Then she'd do something like shout advice to me about what to do in the Fade when I wiped and it would fill me with hope again. I felt like a sucker.

They call her Merrill, Merrill, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than she,
And we know Merrill, lives in a world full of dragons,
Working with demons, demons you see!
Everyone loves Merrill, da'mi,
Ever so kind and gentle is she,
Tricks she will do when bad guys appear,
And how they flee when she's near!
They call her Merrill, Merrill, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than she,
And we know Merrill, lives in a world full of dragons,
Working with demons, demons you see!

Speaking of odd things... last night I refused to give Merrill her mirror knife just to see her reaction (still not doing the rivalmance for another run) but with her friendship bar already maxed. Supposedly refusing to give her the knife should set her in the rivalry path and I did indeed get kicked out of her house later on. But since the friendship bar was already maxed, I got the friendmance scene back at the estate.
Oh that sucks...I need to be careful my next romance pt as I want to try the rival one again. But thanks for posting this...I was wondering what would happen in this circumstance.

I liked how her rivalmance played out,
but getting there wasrough at times. While I liked not having to coddle
demons to keep her happy, but I still felt like I was kicking a kitten
whenever Hawke would snap at her =(
Do you really have to be mean to her though? It's been awhile since I played rival, but I don't recall anything truly cruel coming from Hawke.

When snarky Hawke feeds her the "Gettin' good at this 'hero' thing." line it breaks my tiny, pervy heart to hear her say "I don't need a hero".halokitty wrote...

That's such a douchebag line.
Rival!Hawke is a douchebag. Fact.
[EDIT] It's totally something Shepard would say, and Shepard is a douchebag.

That really depends on how you handle it. Seeing how refusing to give her the knife supposedly gives +75 rivalry, you could easily be polite or neutral to her early on, while doing some things that give rivalry (like destroying the evil tomes) and then just refuse to help her with the mirror saying you want to protect her. No need to be overly mean in that case.
But it certainly is possible to play a mean rivalmance with her.
