DA2 is supposed to span over 6 years after meeting Merrill and there's no mention about attending any meetings in this time, so that may help to narrow things down -- at the time you meet Merrill it's anywhere between 0-4 years from the last meeting which she'd attend at age of 14. So she could be anything between 14-18 at the beginning and 20-24 at the end?Blackout62 wrote...
This line of dialogue actually keeps her age a question but as Lenimph said definitely not 14. She could be 23 and the next Arlathvenn would be the year after she leaves her clan.
Alternatively you could presume Merrill has attended two meetings and is anywhere between 24-28 at the start... but that doesn't really seem very plausible.
It's probably something that wasn't really planned in this sort of detail, anyway.

Mahariel went to 2 clan gatherings
The first when she was little when they got Merrill (Merrill was 4) as Marethari's apprentice and the second when she was old enough to be recognized by Velanna.

Wow... It's really hard seeing Merrill as four years older than Hawker, or even Bethany. Maybe her social awkwardness and unfamiliarity with humans accounts for her seeming much younger.
Merrill might be older. At the beginning of the game.
Merrill: 23
Hawke: 20-23
Bethany/Carver: 19

Which, I imagine, is why Mahariel's parents weren't approved of.
They were of two different clans... it didn't have to do with magic![]()
If elves with magic could only screw other elves with magic you would have the keeper ... marrying other keepers... which isn't how it works.
I suppose. But I can imagine a scattered society - whose leadership all appear to have magical talent (are picked for the role because of it, even), a talent which is being steadily lost with each generation - prefering that those with magic have children with others of magic. Ups the odds, and all that.
But this is true.

Does the latest patch allow Hawke to have the "talk" with Varric about Merrill?
1.02 fixed one of the bugs affecting the conversation (messed up conversation links... pre1.02 Varric would start off talking about Merrill and end up talking about Fenris, if memory serves), but did not actually fix the bug that stops the conversation from triggering altogether.
this may be a little offtopic -but... if they [BW] were able to make [in patch 1.02] grenades and such orderable post-campagin from house then why couldn't they allow Merrill to stay in Hawke's estate?
I managed to get Merrill in the estate after the campaign by going to the door, bringing up her character, but cancelling the travel to the Black Emporium. Merrill ended up appearing next to the door.

How does it make Merrill too young? The first meeting Mahariel has attended Merrill was 4 and was handed over to Mahariel's clan. Then the second meeting is the one Merrill would attend as well, as the age of 14. I'm not sure why any of that would set any further requirements about Merrill's age...Lenimph wrote...

There's probably a resistance to having initiated a romance with a 14-year-old there.tmp7704 wrote...

That said, would the Dalish consider a 14-year-old an adult? She has her blood writing.

It's all the lyrium in the water. It makes humans produce more mages so that clearly happens by taking the magic from the Dalish.Maria Caliban wrote...

Only assuming her parents are dead. Which doesnt seem to be the case. Because she didn't specifically say that she didn't see them at the gathering just that she hadn't seem them in over 10 years. (It's possible the gathering was supposed to happen but the blight made it impossible)
Plus the Warden can be younger then Merrill (and probably is because waiting 10 years for an apprentice seems unlikely).... my warden was not 12 at the start of DA:O <_<

I got the impression she was older than that, too. Perhaps I'm simply looking through human eyes, so to speak, but it was my impression Dalish recieved their tatoo/blood writing at adult status, which doesn't say 'I recieved mine before I was thirteen years old' to me.
Or maybe it's just wishful thinking. I'd really rather she wasn't fourteen in act one, for more reasons than I care to go into

edit: how come every time I do the link as a word thing, it only opens up a blank page when I want to check to make sure it worked? What am I doing wrong?

Well, since gatherings take time every 10 years the only way she could not see them for longer than that is by not meeting them at such gathering. That doesn't necessarily mean they're dead, nor would she really need to specify she hadn't seen them there, imo. Especially since it'd then result in some rather awkward construction along the lines "i haven't seen my parents at last gathering so that makes it more than ten years total"? Weird, even for Merrill.Lenimph wrote...

Does DAO begin immediately after the clan meeting? It coould well be few years since then, and that would bump your Warden up to reasonable age.Plus the Warden can be younger then Merrill.... my warden was not 12 at the start of DA:O
edit: like, say: meeting with Merrill at 14 -> 2-3 years pass -> DAO happens -> +1 year, Hawke meets Merrill who is 17-18 at this point -> still 6 years till the next meeting and rest of DA2 happens in this time.

Edit in response to timeline in above post: That would make sense, in act 3 one of the Dalish elves (the one who helps you with the Zevran quest) says how they're still hoping to receive Halla from another clan.

Yeah... I know that Hawke's age is dependent on who's playing her, so I didn't want to say "Merrill is definitely older." I said almost certainly, because I think most people would age their Hawkes under what we deduce Merrill's age to be, simply because Hawke's spread of possible ages is so broad, and Merrill is at the very zenith of that spread.

I thought that saying "so broad" might raise eyebrows, but I mean relatively. The twins are definitely 18 in the prologue. There's no spread at all. Hawke can be anywhere from 19 to 23.
