The tool gives 15 rivalry and unless friendship is maxed it converts all friendship points to rivalry points if you don't give it to her.
Hmm.... I guess I've been middling it a bit too much... oh well. I guess I'll just hunt for the tomes. Thanks anyways =)

and I know this has likeley be discussed to death but hear I go
I have had the urge to read some Merrill fan fic for some reason, not something that I normally do but just wanted more Merrill. What can I say? that girl has stolen my heart and hasent given it back and plus the ending of the game left me wanting to know what happened with Hawke and Merrill?
Anyway I've been looking all over the net for more Merrill centric fic and I’m not having any luck but what I have found is that people hater her and in some cases it can be quite bigoted things like “she's stupid for wanting to fix the mirror” or “she's a blood mage Arg run away.”
on the other had characters like anders Fenris and Isabella have taken of like fire in a straw hut why? Whats the appeal?
Lets look at these people shall we
Anders is a abomination and he can,t see that himself then spend the whole game preaching how Merrill is a fool for working with a demon and how Mages are the victims in all of this then manipulates Hawke into helping him blow up the cahanrey (Dude you have just invalidated you own argument)
Fenris is someone with no empathy blurting out hate and malice any chance he gets regardless of the situation (see any of Merrill personal quests) and then is quite happy to rip out someone heart if they look at him funny
and finally Isabella OK shes ok I suppose and she dose try to redeem herself but the effort falls flat on it's face when she lets a notorious slaver go just to get his ship.
Then you have Merrill. Her mirror harms no one other than herself she is willing to take all the risk I mean she see's the danger of what she is doing after all she dose ask you to kill her if thing go wrong.
She sees the danger of dealing with daemons even if that self assured prat anders doesn’t and her argument about the blood magic is logical and level headed (if you hit you thumb with a hamer do you blame the hammer?)
Anyway sorry about that just wanted to rant and vent
hope you all have grate Easter holls and such and thanks for reading

I love how one can find new things to love about Merrill each play though. 2day for the first time tried to make Merrill unlock doors and she said "um no, definitely not, ever!" I loled so hard

*HYPOCRITICAL JUDGEMENT INC*
Put simply, Anders and Fenris are have the whole dark and broody and troubled thing going on that just makes certain people swoon all over them and defend them rabidly against any criticism. Troubled But Cute, as TV Tropes calls it. They're cut from the same cloth as Carth, Kaidan, even Garrus and Thane to some extent. Fortunately the latter two deal with it a lot better; Garrus is my absolute favorite character in ME.
Isabela's actually in the same boat as Merrill, in my experience, there's quite a few people who deride her for having yo-yo knickers and make constant jokes about her having diseases.

That is true, always some awesome new things each playthrough.
Bringing her along on different quests with different other party members can net some wonderful dialogues.

I usually befriend her anyway because it's so dang easy.
Howver if i did play a Hawke against BM he/she would probably not be attracted to Merrill anyway.
The two last playtrhoughs has been m/romancing Isabela and f/romancing Anders, can't wait to do a Merrill Romance again this playthrough with the patch.

That would suggest rivalry, but then you'd pretty much have to be mean and mage-hating with her just being hissy at you. *Can* you actually be nice and disagree with her with her still liking you?

Then you can criticize within reason without penalty.

I want to be a proper friend, but apparently I cannot max out rivaly without being extremely mean to her and she to me.
Maybe the suggestion of maxing out friendship early would work, I'll have to check.

Yes, if you aren't maxed at friendship (where it won't budge, ever), all of your friendship will be converted to rivalry, then it will +15 rivalry on top of that. At least, that's my understanding of the mechanics, and that seems to match up with my experience so far.rvayda141 wrote...
I heard that if you don't give Merrill the arulin'holm, but still have friendship with her, the friendship points you have switch to rivalry. Anyone know if there's any truth to that?
I like that, because I can rivalmance her without needing to support the templars or be a jerk to her.
