Thats for gameplay purposes. I believe that lore wise you make a deal with a demon for blood magic/to learn it.
Even Anders asks Merrill if she learned blood magic on her own.
To which she says she contacted the 'spirit' for help in the matter. Blood magic does not necessarily have to be taught to one by a demon, but all Blood Magic is derived from someone who came into contact with a demon at some point.
So... if you are not romancing her, will she still be reasonably nice to you if you switch to rivalry? Well, not immediately after denying her the tool, I can imagine her being angry. I mean afterwards. Since I always manage to ****** off Fenris, I don't need a Merrill-the-spitting-kitten :innocent:Big_Chief wrote...
Yes, if you aren't maxed at friendship (where it won't budge, ever), all of your friendship will be converted to rivalry, then it will +15 rivalry on top of that. At least, that's my understanding of the mechanics, and that seems to match up with my experience so far.rvayda141 wrote...
I heard that if you don't give Merrill the arulin'holm, but still have friendship with her, the friendship points you have switch to rivalry. Anyone know if there's any truth to that?
I like that, because I can rivalmance her without needing to support the templars or be a jerk to her.

Oh, I'm not saying the rivalmance path is better, necessarily. I'm just saying that if I ever want to see what the rival scenes are like, I don't have to be a jerk to get them. I'm actually still not sure which path I think is best, or which I want to be my "canon" playthrough. Mostly because while I don't think blood magic is inherently evil, and I support finding out more about elven history, I find demons shady and I think Merrill should probably trust them a bit less. Although I also think that ultimately it's her choice to make. So I'm leaning towards friendmance, I'm just a bit conflicted about it.

I expected to be maybe a little sad given how that relationship ends up, but all I am is annoyed and pissed off at the two-timing, backstabbing ****

Two-timing?
ishmaeltheforsaken wrote...
Acting all "No, please come back! We want you to be a part of the clan" while telling the clan that it's better to get killed by a varterral than saved by Merrill? That's pretty two-timey.

I thought the getting killed by the Varterral part was more of a thing the clan decided on their own. I never got the feeling that the keeper was encouraging the clan to ostracize Merrill.
ishmaeltheforsaken wrote...
She was. After killing the varterral, Merrill is all "****, what's the prob?" And Marethari is all "It's my duty to warn the clan."
Which, by the way, it totally isn't.

No she pretty clearly said she warned the clan that Merrill might bring back the corruption. Completely different from warning about the Varterral.

Yes. Pol was fearful of Merrill because she was trying to fix the mirror that killed two clansmen. He ran from her without realizing he was headed for the Varterral, I suppose. I think his response was a bit irrational, but it is what it is.
The hunters dying from the Varterral had nothing to do with Merrill. They were to gather some items that the clan would take with them when moving to another location and usually Varterrals do not attack but it became corrupted somehow (probably due to the demon).
