I love Merrill to tiny Merrill bits, but- considering her adherence to the old, old elven ways and beliefs- I find it a bit surprising (albeit a welcome surprise) that she falls for Hawke at all.  She is, after all, primarily concerned restoring her people and rescuing them from eventual extiniction, but certainly a relationship with a human would appear to  work against those overarching cultural motivations.

Then again, the heart wants what and who the heart wants...

Sadly however, this isn't reflected as much as I had hoped.
Here's to hoping that there will be more Merrill content in the future...

She brings this up if you're a manhawke. She seemed to be mostly concerned with what others would think.

Don't know what ladyhawke gets though.

Edit: If she'd be all about the rescue at all costs she'd be more like Anders rather than how she is. Which is pretty relaxed.

Ladyhawke gets that she is a goddess worshipped from afar. The only concern is whether Merrill deserves her. :) (friendship path)

I'm with you. Merrill obviously loves Hawke, but it seemed the story could have been more turbulent. Maybe not between her and Hawke, but Merrill's internal struggle with falling for a human and how Hawke would have handled that would have been very interesting.

Whatever the case more content would be great.

If it doesn't work, you can try the DA:O character creator instead. Steam refused to let me upload, so I went with the DAOCC and it worked.

Oh, that doesn't work either. It just hangs on 'uploading' forever and ever.

If Hawke supports her as a friend and confidant over the years, helps her obtain the arulin'holm and hands it over to her because he trusts her, and is proactive in helping the mages (as you can see from the 'look' that she gives Hawke in "Act of Mercy" if he tells Ser Thrask that he'll help), then I can see it. Her comment to Aveline about how she'd like to keep it with Hawke tells me that she was interested early on, and I think his actions would play a part in building a real relationship between them that would transcend his race.

Merrill is initially all alone. No one else is in her corner, when everyone she's ever known and grown up with is against her, including the closest person she ever had to a mother, and it's a human who is ignorant of her culture and values who is the only one willing to stand by her for a cause she believes can lead to a renaissance for the elven people and restore so much that was lost in Arlathan.

Merrill interested in Hawke early on is something you have to work for too i think.
I noticed that if i visited Merrill in her home with a neutral firendship meter (right after she joins you) she would only gain friendship +5 if you'd pick the "You're Welcome" option, choosing the flirt option didn't result in any changes.
I reloaded and cocluded a bunch of quests that nearly filled her towards friendship, after getting her friendship passive and talking to her then in her house i managed to get the +5 friendship from her flirt option too.

"I'd much rather keep it with her" (him if hes a male i s'pose ) has only played for me on those playthroughs as well.

I've gotten it on both of my playthroughs.

Both times, I pick up Merrill last (I don't think Hawke would leave the city to Sundermount without being equipped for wilderness travel), take her immediately to the alienage, do a few quests without her in my party (so she can acclimate to the area) and then head to Merrill's house to speak with her and add her to the party permanently. She still tends to have decent friendship at the end of Act 1.

I really want to do a playthrough where I rivalmance her by supporting her early on and then refusing to give her the arulin'holm, but I'm stuck on Act 3 of my second playthrough.

Dont' know how people play games over and over again.

Probably the same way they can sleep with the same person over and over again. :?

It's fun, but you do eventually end up getting some diminishing returns. You have to challenge yourself to find new and exciting things, and then things can be fun again. Or you can just set it aside for a while, then come back later when you have a craving.

I used many mods, and I romance different characters.

My first playthrough was clean, and I played a noble good-willed male warrior who aids templars(mostly, except in severe cases). I romanced Isabela.

My second playthrough, I began using the little mods that fix bugs, improve skin tones, hair etc, and I played a female rogue archer who's very sarcastic/charming. Still, I played it like Isabela did, going to bed with multiple characters, but refusing to commit on any relationships. I was usually neutral, but helped mage in the end.

My third and current playthrough, I am using many appearance mods, and this time I am a vicious/aggressive female blood mage. My companions are not aware of me using blood magic because I am so strong, I cast an illusion on their minds! I support mages through and through, and this time, my admiration for Merrill as a fellow blood mage would mean we shall have lots of loving!

Yeah, mods do nothing for me. And I romanced Merrill my first run and Isabela my second. It kept me going, but I'm at the middle of Act 3 now, and am not playing to the end just to see a kiss I can watch on YouTube.

If I really enjoy a game... I will play it a ton of times...

DAO : 16 playthroughs... 8 as HN, 8 combined for the others( 2 mages who did the US, 1 for everything else)...
DAA: 9 playthroughs( the ones I enjoyed the most in origins.)
DA 2: working on my 5 right now( second mage) - 3 warriors( 2 males 1 female...all 2-handers), 1 rogue( male - dual -wield...may do a female one next...not sure, don't like rogues much, since they effectively eliminate varric, isabella, and sebastian from the party)....the warriors n first mage romanced Merrill( though 2 of the warriors also slept with Isabella) and sided with the templars( mostly because I dislike Anders n Orsino...and I like being the viscount of Kirkwall)...current mage(all my mages will be female) is rival - mancing Fenris...and has sided with the mages in the issues though she booted Anders from the party in Act 2 where I am now, not sure about the ending yet( Carver is warden here( was a templar first time), Bethany always becomes a warden ). At this point and depending on how much DLC comes out I may do another 15 or playthroughs of the games. I also like doing different buiilds of characters and abusing the emporium for CC n maker's sigh potions.

I'm like this with games I love, though admittedly it's harder with JRPGS since the4y tend to be longer than the WRPGs( though I'm gonna play ME 2 atleast 3 times when I get it on PS3 n and ME 3 well, with Liara returning.... i envision quite a few play thoughs of that as well).

Why not try playing different personalities?

I only just realised to my shock that I could support Ser Varnell and help him against the Qunari, and that Mother Petrice apparently can be saved too.

I'm playing an aggressive sarcastic mage...and even then I refused to side with varnell and Petrice... I hate those two as well with a ridiculous passion!

I am the same as Maria, I just cant go through the same game more then two times that close together. I beat DA2 twice, and I tried doing a third run, but couldnt get past Act 1. I'll have to wait a while before I can do another playthrough.

In the meantime, I am going to try and finish Awakening, GoA, and WH. I never got a chance to play them.
