Thank you bleetman. Big question here: What happens if you ARE capped on friendship and keep the arulin'holm? Does she still throw you out of the house? Or conversely, if you are capped on rivarly and give her the arulin'holm?
I guess what I'm asking is does the story keep track of the arulin'holm giving as a separate variable or is it just tied to friendship/rivalrly which cutscenes you get?
Edit: OK I just tested this. Maximized on friendship, you still get the angry dialogue and get thrown out of the house, but after that the next quest goes straight to a friendly dialog that implies you've given her the arulin'holm. So I would say that maximizing friendship/rivalrly and then acting counter to that in the mirror image quest probably hasn't been scripted to have consistent results.

Merrill is (as far as I'm aware) unique in her approval, in that you can immediately switch from friendship to rivalry based on whether you give her the arulin'holm, provided you aren't capped for friendship by that point. There's no need to specifically hunt for rivalry points and leave her out of mage-friendly quests if you do that.
